Do women have to go too far to get the attention of men?

So what happened at the small, wonderful, Catholic college? How did men treat her there? If it was a bad experience, I am wondering if it was so great after all. I agree with a previous poster that at your general secular college (one of which I went to) the dating scene was nonexistent. I have heard, though, that at some Catholic colleges students take dating quite seriously.

If she was at one that was not so great, I agree that she will probably be pleasantly surprised at dating after the college years. For everyone I know, that is exactly what happened.

I would stay positive, who wants a man that has been around, and around and around the laps many times, to used . A Catholic dating Site or ask friends do they know of any nice Catholic guy wanting to go on a blind date is a better bet, and not all men when they are looking for a wife want to hitch with a used car either, there are some nice guys out there, hard to find, but they are there, like a pearl who also like a woman not to be used so he does not have to worry about some guy coming up to him saying I know your wife ( in the Biblical term) Chastity in marriage is something beautiful to keep for your husband only, as the Church teaches.

Plus then one is entering into another field of contraceptives which is against Church teaching, so the whole thing is rather sordid.

…Her theory is that she “can’t compete” in the dating world because she won’t engage in any premarital sexual activity. From her point of view, all of the eligible men pass her over for women who will do more for them. I told her that this is not the case-that those men would not be a good match for her anyway and that they are doing her a favor by weeding themselves out. But she is still convinced that if “everyone else” would stop dressing immodestly and having sex, it would be easier for her to get attention.
The idea that all young men require pre-marital sex to be on offer to date a girl is preposterous.

And how would the potential suitors know her position on such a matter having never dated her? Are you saying the topic comes up in canteen over lunch?

I know you mean well, but that language is potentially hurtful to any of our brethren who have had checkered pasts and are attempting to embrace chastity.

We do not want to give the impression that once one has fallen, there’s no point in trying to get up again.

Also, that language is potentially very hurtful to victims of sexual assault or sexual abuse.

I read secular dating advice columns, and in the grownup secular dating scene, there seems to be a third date expectation for sex.

Also, in the college world, a bona fide relationship may start from a “hook-up,” and hence hook-ups may be seen as the only way to get one’s foot in the door, in the absence of any dating culture.

Or at least that’s the impression I get. There are also apparently some US colleges where there is actual dating.

It’s somewhat reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland–sentence first, verdict afterwards! Or, in the current college scene, hook-up first, relationship afterwards (possibly)!

Please read what I said carefully, we are not talking about victims of sexual assault or sexual abuse that is dreadful state of affairs.

Also we are not talking about women/men with checkered pasts and now trying to live a chaste life.

What the discussion was about an Aunty discussing her niece who said did she have to dress immmodestly or live unchastely to catch a man’s eye, as she was so upset about not catching a guy’s eye and would like to get married.

This niece has her chastity and would like to keep her for her marriage, please don’t take away her innocence but rather applaud it, if one has lost there’s well that is there problem,
we are all responsible for our own actions.

Celtic Maiden, you said, and I quote:

“I would stay positive, who wants a man that has been around, and around and around the laps many times, to used . Please imagine how that “used car” language sounds to people who are repentant or who are the victims of sexual assault or abuse.

It really isn’t a nice way to refer to another child of God.

Also, come to think of it, the “used car” analogy is also offensive to widows and widowers.

It’s just terrible all around.

Let’s not use that analogy, OK?

I personally don’t expect the perfect gal with a perfect past. My main concern would be where is she now. What is her character, morality, and beliefs right now?

Some of us maybe have always been virtuous, but many of us come to virtue from a more colorful past. I’d count myself very blessed to find a virtuous gal to have as a wife, God willing, regardless of a past that’s perhaps best left in the past.

I think she is hiding something and concocted this story to get you off it.

How many boys has she been on dates with who after a couple of dates discover that she isn’t going to put out and never talk to her again? How did they find out? I’m just not buying it without specifics.

Indeed, I am sure God finds it very offensive when people don’t exercise control and have pre marital sex, and again we are not talking about widows and widowers, why cannot you not stick to the point and the Question posted, instead of going off in different directions. Please read the Question posted, and used car is the most modest analogy I can think of, better than antique, or used widely. High mileage maybe you prefer.

People are not practising there Catholic faith I see it all around me and what they tell me.
By being an Ostrich is not going to amend things, say what you mean , and mean what you say.

On reflection, I probably didn’t do myself any favors with my college wardrobe, which was (especially early on) drab and not exceptionally flattering. So, here’s point #6:
  1. Avoid wearing clothing that closely resembles those favored by female members of polygamous cults.
:rotfl:

Seriously though, a lot of us needed a little crash course in looking nice without looking slutty. I spent half of college in jeans that were big enough that you couldn’t even see my rear, shirts to match, too-small sports bras, and straight limp hair that I had no idea how to care for. I looked like a 14 year old who’d gotten into her older brother’s clothes.

What was the saying? Your clothing should be tight enough to show you’re a woman and loose enough to show you’re a lady.

There is no need to concoct anything–at many colleges, the college boyfriend is a rare and precious creature and has been for some time.

It’s possible that nobody has even asked her out, ever, at college. I hate to repeat myself, but 20 years ago, when I was an undergraduate at a large secular college, I was literally never asked out by any guy on campus, ever–not so much as a cup of coffee or a Dairy Queen blizzard. It was weird. I did start dating a little starting late my junior year during a study abroad and then an off-campus older guy my senior year, but no guys from my college, ever.

It really can be that bad and I’m not surprised that the OP’s niece is finding it demoralizing.

Why isn’t it just possible to praise chastity without using offensive and objectifying analogies?

Here’s a piece you may find helpful: “roses–how the purity culture taught me how to be abused.”

I would second this. Especially what she said, that you have no idea what’s happening until too late. You hit the point where you didn’t say no because you know on some level you couldn’t say no, because fearful silence can be twisted to make it look like consent. And you stay, you stay because you think you consented and who would want you after that?

Even without that, the truth is that we are a religion of forgiveness. I know young women who willingly had sex, who deeply regret it now and realize they were wrong, who would make wonderful faithful wives. Yet they often feel they are unwanted or worthless because of their past sin. Let it never be said that we were less forgiving than Christ!

… Let her get her degree and a job before worrying about any boyfriend. Men have a tendency to be late bloomers.
if men are late bloomers as you say, then she should dump the idea about getting her degree and go for and older man who " just bloomed" as you say, because when they late bloom, they don’t go for women their age. They go for the younger ones. You’ll be out of the scene by then and passed over if you wait. Just saying, in general.

To the op… Have no advice. Getting noticed isn’t the difficult part or the problem.

I’m sure God also finds it very offensive when people use language like this in reference to another of God’s children. As Xantippe said, it is possible to praise someone for chastity without denigrating others. I mean really, you don’t see that?

I’d add that there’s the very real possibility that the OP’s niece will eventually find a great Catholic guy with a past, but one that’s well behind him. However, if she’s been soaking in the sort of purity talk that treats non-virgins as being ritually unclean or contaminated, that sets up a really terrible obstacle to them achieving a happy marriage. We get those posters every now and then of either gender that just can’t stop thinking obsessively about their beloved’s past, much to the detriment of their relationship or marriage. Some of that feeling is quite natural and unavoidable, but I think at least some portion of it comes from ODing on purity talk and is avoidable. Let’s avoid it.

If you are a girl, God has given you a marvellous power here. You have it in your hands to decide whether you are going to be an angel guardian to your boy, or a pawn in the devil‟s game to sweep him off his feet. Remember, you are the stronger of the two. God has made you so, and in consequence yours is the greater responsibility. Your boy will succumb more easily than you. It is easier for him to sin than for you. Hence help him to be loyal to Christ. Do not be his mortal enemy, stealing up to the door of his tabernacle, laying siege to it, and ultimately battering it in pieces. The world will tell you: You love each other, therefore indulge in passionate signs of this love, and make sure you go into places where you are free to do so. The Catholic’s answer comes readily: No, we are not going to do these things; we are not going into these places, just precisely because we do love each other. True love proves itself by sacrifice.
Again, if you are a girl (for if our girls are pure our boys will be pure, too), your strength of character will win that boy‟s affection and admiration, if he is a boy worthy of your love. He will realize that you are a treasure worth having, not a toy to be played with and then cast aside when the whim takes him. Your loyalty to Christ and God‟s Law may lose you, indeed, a popinjay who is out for “a good time,” but have no fear that you will lose a man worthy of your heart‟s affection. And, even if you were never to marry, to die rather than offend God, especially by mortal sin, is heroism. “I would rather die keeping God‟s Law than live breaking it,” said a fine girl of this type. But it is not God‟s way to allow Himself to be outdone in generosity. Stand loyal to Him and His Law, and you are safe in entrusting your future to His hands.
