They most certainly do exist.

Check out the 'Rite of Baptism", there is an exorcism done as part of every Baptism.

After the exorcism the priest anoints the baby with the oil of the catechumens.
In addition, every Ordination to Holy Orders carries with it the ability do conduct Exorcism (obviously, if one is done as part of Baptism).

Outside of Baptism, though, they are only to be conducted with permission of the local Bishop.

Why would you be so surprised, Operaboz? Exorcisms have been in the history of the Catholic Church since Jesus Christ did exorcisms.

When people start to think that Satan does not exist the Devil claps his hands. If you are not aware of the Demons that are in the world and how you can avoid them, you play right into the hands of Satan.

You can find a book written by John Paul II’s Exorcist, Father Gabriel Amorth, “An Exorcist Tells His Story” from several sources.

Exorcism IS REAL. Satan IS REAL. The priest doing the Exorcism has to have the permission of the Bishop of the area(Diocese). Exorcism is more rare today than earlier, but in Italy today many exorcisms are being done. Exorcism will not cure mental illness.

Operaboz…yes, Exorcisms are the real deal…the Devil is real and sometimes demonic possession takes place and requires a formal exorcism…however, what your Priest might have been talking about the 3 Scrutinies that take place on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent…I am not sure if that is what he is talking about…because it appears he might have said this 5 weeks ago…but anyways…The Scrutinies are primarily for the Catechumens in their preparation for Baptism and Confirmation…During each of the Scrutinies, there is a Prayer of Exorcism so that the Cathechumens, Candidates, and Catholics may be freed from the Power of the Evil One and protected on our journey of Faith…This is far different from the image of Exorcism you probably have in your head…such as you saw in the movie, The Exorcist. That is the Rite of Exorcism, as opposed to a Prayer of Exorcism.

But maybe he was talking about an actual Exorcism…if he was…THat is very intriguing.

exorsizm is even more real an appropriate today because we now know of mental illness and so are not mistakenly trying to exorsize insanity, preists really are fighting forces of evil.

aren’t exorcisms supposed to be kept kinda private instead of having the incident announced in church?
