Or to put it more directly that God sends of signs of what he would like us to do or are we pretty much on our own?

Absolutely!!! I am careful about interpriting anything big to fit what I want though. i would suggest running big descisions by a good levelheaded friend. One example in my life is I usually end my morning prayer with the thought of being useful or helpful to someone. During my day if someone pops into my head, perhaps someone I havent seen in a while I try to give them a call or contact them in some way just to say “hi, was thinking of you” more often then not the person would say “I thought of you this morning too” or were going through some rough time. Just this afternoon i called an aquantance I havent seen in a while and learned her mother recently passed away and her son had a punctured lung from tennis. Was it a sign from God? Not sure but its surprising what happens when I do this.

Of course.

God cannot speak to you directly like you can with an actual human being. there is no big voice that sounds from the sky. god talks to us with our conciense and with ‘signs’. that is how he communicates with us. OR he will put somebody in our path which communicates with us through god.

If you mean astrological signs such as Capricorn, etc and whether they control my life, no I do not believe. Signs of other kinds, like taking as a sign whether I should do this or that at a given time, such as picking up a hitch-hiker, no. The only signs I believe in are the signs the government puts up along the road directing me to “merge left” or “Stop”, or “Belvidere–20miles” or “Yield” etc.

Sometimes. You know how you may hear a song that describes your current situation? Subtle things like that.

I definitely believe in signs. I’ve had a few of them in my life.

What I also believe is that most of the time God does not send *extraordinary *signs. I think most of the time we have to rely on Church teachings, our intellect, our families, and good old common sense. Those are what I would call “ordinary signs”. But even if something is “ordinary” it can very much be from God.

I think anytime we receive what we think is an extraordinary sign we need to check it against the Church’s teaching. (And it makes sense to check it against other “wisdom” too.) Sometimes we do need to throw caution to the wind. But we also need to accept the consequences, whether it is what God wants us to do or not.

Personal antedote:

I was having a “conversation” with the Lord about my afternoon headaches that had been happening for 2 weeks.

Finally, I remembered the Crown of Thorns and what a headache He must have had with that and a headache from all of the blood loss from the Scourging. I decided to offer it up to him for penance-- for myself or someone else, His decision.

Well, I refilled this medicine last week. It came back to me in a box (It hadn’t before) and it had a big yellow sticker on it saying “MAY CAUSE HEADACHES”.

I stopped the medicine, and voila, the daily headaches/migraines have gone away. That is what was causing the problem.

Thank you, Lord and Blessed Mother!

yes also have had them. one i definatly could not deny as a sign,

a couple of years ago i had a conversation with a few friends and one asked do i believe in GOD i said yes and they were amazed one said he had never heard anyone say this before. the next day i was lying in my bed having a smoke at this particular time i was living a pretty wild life and hadn’t seen the inside of a church in a long time.
i had my ashtray on the ground and put my cigg in it you know the type one with four corners to hold the ciggerate. i then lay back on the bed and was wondering why do i believe in a GOD is it because i was born in to a practising family and was havering grave doubts. i leaned back over to get my ciggerate but there was none there. i starred at the ashtray for i’m guessing 2 mins then i lay back on the bed thinking maybe i didn’t lite one at all and started wondering about the existence of GOD again. but then i stopped and said i know i lite one looked over and it was sitting in one of the corners with smoke bellowing out of it, impossible to miss. question answered

I believe that God often gives us signs in order to answers prayers or show us a path, but I would not go so far to say that he cannot speak directly to someone if he wished. I don’t mean to attack you, throw the thread off, so anyone please correct me if I’m wrong.

I truly think the Lord is constantly trying to speak to us in different ways. I think that we are the only obstacle in the way of hearing Him.
Blessed are the ears that gladly receive the pulses of the Divine Whisperer, and give no heed to the many whisperings of this world.
-Thomas à Kempis

I’ve heard many amazing stories from people who have received “signs”, but in my life, it seems when I receive a sign I end up totally misinterpreting what it meant. It must be a sign that I need more humility;).

Yes, I’ve seen it personally.

Weeks before my DH died, I ran into - almost literally - someone I had not seen, talked to, nor thought of for about 10 years. This couple has been the biggest support for me and my boys these past few months. They have offered us opportunities we could have only dreamed of. I believe it was a sign my boys and I WILL BE OK.

I also believe in signs, but also believe that not everything is a sign from God, if you know what I mean. As in, we need to be careful about how we interpret things as not everything is a sign from God.

My personal experience with a “sign” would be when I became Catholic. I grew up very conservative Lutheran and had a rather painful conversion as my father really took it rough. But, on the Easter Vigil when I became Catholic, as I took the blood of Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time in the Catholic Church it burned so badly as it went down. I remember drinking it and just being shocked as I’ve never felt something like that before. I’ve taken wine in Lutheran communion, and even now as I take communion in the Catholic Church and I’ve never experienced it again. But it really comforted me in knowing I was doing the right thing.

Amen, great point. I am reminded of St. Faustina, she was suspicious of her visions of our Lord at first. If I remember correctly she relied on her spiritual director to help her discern.

This also relates to the NWO thread.

Jesus in revelation said to watch for the ‘signs’ of the season. if he used the word ‘signs’, then i sure hope its real!

Saveusfromhell, did it cross your mind that God was perhaps telling you not to smoke in bed?? 😉
