Do You Believe Popes are Sinless?

Well, I’m not sure the pastor “had me” doing anything. I was more concerned with the fact that this person was so sincerely convinced of something so fundamentally incorrect. It wasn’t a contentious thing at all, we are neighbors. But because some people isolate themselves from other groups they believe are evil in some way, I thought that seeing us as regular folks who share similar ideas would be useful in future with this person and myself having to be in close proximity in what is, essentially, a retirement community. I’d never go out of my way to try and convince someone of say, the reality of the Eucharist. They can ask if they want but otherwise live and let live.
 
I love and welocme that approach. Do not ram anything down anyone’s throat, but when he opens his mouth offer a small bite and wait to see if he asks for more. I am so discouraged on some posts - not all here- wherein the entire papacy from J XX111 and the Vatican Council are written off and neither reason nor Bible make any sense to them. I just made up my new analogy here - hope it helps the shovellers slow down, and encourages those of us who need patience to wait for the open mouth!
 
The only people that are sinless is Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. However, the Virgin Mary’s sinlessness was dependent upon Our Saviour.

My respose to you was poorly worded. I should have said the pastor tried to get you to do the docrinal dance.

Ridiculous! Any half-educated Catholic knows that infallibility does not mean the popes are free from sin.
 
The pope is a man just like the rest of us, and makes mistakes just like we do.

That is what my family was discussing just now. It isn’t that Catholic believe that the Pope is sinless but that is the myth promoted, as you say, by certain varieties of Protestants. 🤷
 
I think it’s mostly because of a misunderstanding of what papal infallibility is. When I was growing up as a protestant it was commonly taught that Catholics believed that the pope was infallible in every thing he said or did, that for instance if he said baseball was evil during an interview off the cuff, every Catholic in the world would have to avoid baseball no questions asked.

This person was a neighbor who was a guest in my home and we were having a conversation where some misunderstanding came to light. That’s all. For some reason a lot of people ITT presumed some sort of confrontation. This was a perfectly lovely individual and no one was doing anything to anyone. Again. What I wanted here and what people generously gave, was a look into the attitudes of the average Catholic person toward the Pope. It was easy at the next visit to just say I was inspired by the conversation to start a thread and show them my computer screen. That’s all. No one TRIED to “get me” to do anything whatsoever.

Perhaps by the time you are of retirement age you will have found you can have these conversations in a not only non-contentious way, but in a warm and charitable way while still discussing the weather and the new heating system and parking difficulties. At some point you simply become comfortable enough with who you are to not have to try and change everyone else.

As a former Protestant, I agree.
 
This topic has been beaten to death. Can we stop and start a new one. For example, the NEW TESTAMENT was slowly understood by the whole Church so we now are taught that LIFE is sacred from womb to tomb, no death penalty, note how prevalent in the so-called civilised USA, white Europe dropped it, abortion legalised and spreading with Leftists in charge, war is hell and immoral if we have NOT tried everything else, Gulf 11 and onto Pakistan and Afghanistan,? N Korea with nukes and who will actually take over. the poor ground down while the wealthy get huge bonuses and taxes are too low for those who can afford them. The popes can commit sin BUT WE SIN A LOT MORE by not listening to them announce the Gospel of Life, ALL Life and not just abortion as the right wing does too often. AND the SSPX and others claim that since Pius X11 all POPES are not teaching the Bible and Church teaching from the Middle Ages about Creation, Genesis 1-3 etc. START ASKING HOW YOU and I are not thinking, acting and VOTING for THE ENTIRE GOSPEL OF LIFE, That, dear :mad: Family is SIN.
