Do You Believe Popes are Sinless?

PLEASE slow down here sisters and brothers. Jesus was Son of God and Son of Mary. He could have sinned, but did not. If he was a robot who was “programmed” HE would not have been able to be OBEDIENT - read Phil 2;6-11 and so freely accept the Cross. Similarly MARY’s sinlessness did not prevent her from CHOOSING and agreeing to be Jesus’ Mother, God created us as free human beings, no one is programmed to sin or be sinless we have a free will and a conscious thinking mind.

The Church has been blessed with many saintly popes and cursed with some infamous ones. Infallibility and sinlessness are two different concepts.

The fact that the Church has had some bad popes does not negate Her status as the New Israel. Israel had many bad kings but they remained the chosen people. The Protestant minister should read the obituaries of the kings of the Old Testament.

Please remember it was Jesus said “Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone”.I don’t believe there is a Pope who would have cast the first stone.
 
Surely 13 days in Nov and 9 in Dec have exhausted the topic :)and allowed enough repetitions for people on a subject that was a non-starter to begin with; infallible is not impeccable Ergo.:mad:
 
On the statement that Jesus is not included with Mary as a sinless human, that is the beauty and mystery of Jesus. He is 100% human and 100% divine. He had to be human in order to relate to humanity. He had to be God in order to redeem humanity. Therefore, he is both human and divine. Mary is only human.

Precisely.🙂 Indeed, if the humility of recent popes can be used as any sort of a measure, they would, IMHO, be horrified that anyone imagined that they would…

I was in conversation with a “non-denominational” Christian Pastor about the Eucharist and discussing Scripture passages when I was challenged about the Pope. The Pastor assured me that the vast majority of Catholics believe that Popes are sinless and perfect.

And, in fact, became a bit angry when I said I knew a whole forum of Catholics and I was pretty sure they would not agree. But what do I know, I haven’t asked. So I am asking in order to collect a bit of data.

Please say if you believe Popes are sinless.

What your non-denominational friend here was that he heard that Catholics say that the pope is infallible. We don’t mean that Popes are sinless at all! They are humans too. 😃
What we mean by infallible is whatever is ex cathedra is infallible. It is free from doctrinal error.

Wow. Let’s see…there are, what? 1 billion Catholics? So the “vast majority”, let’s just say 65% which equals to about 650,000,000 Catholics believe that popes are sinless. And this pastor knows them and what they think.

Clearly there’s some bi-location going on here to get around that much.
 
**I repeat we have settled this topic. INFALLIBLE has to do with MIND/BRAIN/DOGMA. Whereas, IMPECCABLE has to do with conduct.
i do not suffer fools gladly so at a certain point this topic got so repetitive. As to the Pope’s sacrament iof reconciliation, reference 🤷 above The Pope is a priest-bishop and every MASS begins with. I CONFESS (my sins). Warch HH B XV1 on TV on EWTN and see him say it. **
 
I could tell from the first 2 or 3 posts that you already have the complete answer but since you were asking as a poll, I’ll add my “no” to the list.

The Pope, I believe, has a confessor / spiritual director. History aside (all those very sinful men who were Popes), I think those that are more spiritual and closer to God would see their sins more clearly. What many of us would dismiss or not see as sinful, they would be confessing.

Last time i checked, most or maybe even all were humans and it were more than 100 and the number of sinless humans was something like <=2 (depending a bit on definition of human), so it seems pretty unlikely that even one pope was without sin.

no, the Pope is not sinless

to a person that would suggest Catholics believe this I would say/ask:

well, it’s well publicized in the Vatican media outlets that the Pope goes to confession quite regularly…I believe John Paul II actually went to confession almost daily did he not? so if everyone believes the popes are sinless…why would any of them need to waste time going to confession? 🙂

As I tried to explain to my visitor. This thread, however, printed and presented, made a much better argument. Especially with the number, quality and similarity of responses.
