Do you believe that God speaks to you?

Do you believe that God speaks to you? Does he give you commands and does not doing those commands equal sin? There are things I feel that God commands me but my weakly human self due to my weakness and frailty,shall I be punished by Moses or something worse?
 
As a skeptic I am apprehensive of saying that I hear commands from God. I would first put them through a series of tests:
Is what I hear morally wrong?
Does it violate God’s law?
So with all things the human mind takes information and interprets it. The mind is fallible. The question must be asked what are you being told to do? Is it little things such as go talk to that person, try to comfort him/her. Or is it as terrible as lock your children in a car and send it into a lake? This was not an attempt at humor many will recall the Texan mother whose trial had national coverage.
 
Talk with your pastor as soon as possible. What you seem to be experiencing has nothing to do with Catholic teaching.

Punished by Moses? I don’t understand why you would think such a thing.

Yes, God speaks to me. Its more that He speaks to my conscience and at times feel His Holy Spirit prompting me to do things that are good like volunteer or to pray for someone or like during my 2nd conversion, He led me into the confessional to confess some un-repented sin. I hear Him speak to me most intimately thru His Word mostly when I am at Mass. I found that when I went thru my 1st conversion, God revealed Himself to me and after I had 3 things that I had to do. 1. Go to Church. 2. Go to Church to pray with the community of faithful and 3. Receive Holy Water. I needed to claim my Baptism as my own and to profess it as my own as I was baptized an infant and my baptism was made in proxy by my parents. I had fallen away from “practicing” my Catholic faith but had always maintained my prayer life - my communication with God never ended but felt His Holy Spirit calling me back to worshipping Him at Mass.

I don’t know what you mean by being punished by Moses?

I know that after I read these words of Scripture, I went to confession shortly after:

Romans 2:3-5:
Do you suppose, then, you who judge those who engage in such things and yet do them yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God?
Or do you hold his priceless kindness, forbearance, and patience in low esteem, unaware that the kindness of God would lead you to repentance?
By your stubbornness and impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and revelation of the just judgment of God.

If you believe God is speaking to you and commanding you to do something, it is vital that you discern this properly. Preferably with the help of a wise priest. Don’t try and go it alone and don’t act without discerning! :eek:

For what it’s worth, I believe God has spoken to me in the past but I try to be careful not to attach too much meaning to these things and am working through things slowly with a priest 👍

I still think you need to talk with your priest to find out for sure what these impulses or whatever are. God generally doesn’t “command” us to do something before he has led us into a more accepting spirit. He leads, he doesn’t push.
 
The things that make me anxious are not too bad though-it is things-like giving up small pleasures(like a journal) or doing good works(like donating blood). It’s like a termite in my brain-nagging me to do it,but I do not do it and that makes me guilty -I am concerned for my soul but if I am sorrowful and worried relating to him perhaps it is not so bad since it depicts a fear of him-hopefully a fear of love.

Perhaps it is a blessing to suffer in his name?

Yes, God speaks to me, though it is almost always soft and subtle.
You mentioned how “It’s like a termite, nagging.” about how there are things you can do better, small things (small pleasures?) you can forego. I’m not sure about that.
Of course, it’s good to suffer for God’s sake. But what is this suffering about?
And then, perhaps you can connect with your RCIA mentor/s or as one mentioned, your parish priest, to get matters clarified. Take care always.

When something is nagging at me, when I am spiritually confused, and I can’t find peace, I take it to confession. The enemy wants us to be confused like that. Jesus does not. Jesus says, “Be not afraid.”

When I take these anxieties to confession, I know that I am going to Jesus and He will help me sort things out. I know that Jesus speaks though my confessor and then I don’t have to worry anymore. 🙂

Take what you have written here with you to confession. Jesus loves you! “Be not afraid.” Through the priest, He will help you figure out the proper place of service and suffering in your life.

i believe God speaks to everyone, but not everyone is good at listening. i am not sure he gives commands, i think its more asking us. A priest can help you discern what you feel God has asked of you.

When I went thru my last conversion, I found that listening to Christian contemporary music really spoke to my mind and heart and helped me express my love for Jesus in a very simple and uncomplicated way and then I found myself listening to Gregorian chant which really spoke to my soul which helped me when I was trying to understand Church doctrines. I also found that when I read Sacred Scripture combined with reading The Catechism of the Catholic Church really helped all of me in trying to understand God’s will and plan for me in my life.

The spirit can be moved by God, the flesh, Satan, or the world. Ideally, only one of those things are the correct one to listen to. If you have successfully discerned within your spirit that God is trying to move you down a certain path, it is best that you follow His words and direction. Even if you stumble when He gives you guidance, just remember that God draws straight with crooked lines.
