G’day All.

Romans 10:13
For * “whoever calls* * on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”*
I’m not sure if this is the correct area to post this thread (I apologize if it is. Please move it to the appropriate area if need be)

What exactly does it mean to ‘call upon the name of the Lord’ and how does a Catholic interpret this and put it into practice? Me personally, don’t fully understand it. Can someone please help me out?

Hi, to call on the Lord’s name means more than to call out to Him for salvation, it requires a response from our whole being, which is the fullness of the “call on His name.”
If that weren’t so there would have been no need for Jesus and for His teaching in the gospels. The ‘Lord’ is God, and God knows what to call on the Lord’s name to be saved, means in the fullness of the meaning. Jesus would not have come if faith were enough on its’ own. eg see Ephesians 2 and Romans 2 in Apologetics June 2.

Really, calling on the Lord’s name is living the gospel and participating in the Sacraments.

Bless you, fellow Aussie

Catholic custom begins and ends everyprayer, including the Mass, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and administers all sacraments in the Holy Name of the Trinity.

The bible also says “Not everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved but he who does the will of the Father”

What is the will of the Father?
The Will of the Father is for us to join ourselves to Him through His Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Father, through Jesus gave us the perfect example of doing the Father’s will when He lived and preached the Truth of the Kingdom even unto death.

He gave us the simplest and most profound faith based on the First two commandments.
  1. Thou Shalt Love the Lord Your God with your whole being
  2. Love thy neighbor as yourself.
He gave us the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church to hold, protect and teach these truths. He promised that Hell would not prevail against Her and that He would be with us till the end of time.

He gave us the Sacraments, in particular the Eucharist, to refresh us, encourage us and keep us close to Him.

All these things He gave us that we might be saved and live eternally with Him.

In sum, To do God’s will we must:
Repent and be baptized.
We must Trust fully in Christ’s Promise to be with us.
We must accept God’s will in our lives, even unto death.
We must live our lives in Christian Charity.
We must do those works which our Christian life calls on us to do.
We must continually ask forgiveness when we fail to act in Charity.
We must Eat His Body and Drink His Blood in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in order to have His Life within us.

This may not be the best explanation, but it is my explanation.

Peace
James

That is not understandable. Jesus says, “Call in the name of the Lord (Full sop)” But you are adding few other things. If it was the Father only then it would be alright. But why should any one add to the list of those who are to be called for help?? That si the question. Please Call in the name of the Lord (only) as it is mentioned in the bible. Thanks.

IF we protestants are told we should take Jesus’ words regarding communion seriously in its context, why can’t you take Paul’s words seriously for exactly what they are? Why do you add all the above stuff to it? Paul was speaking to the Romans about confessing and believing not making sure you keep the sacrements. He was speaking about verbally confessing the workd that God had done on the inside. Why add all of the other stuff to it when none of that was even mentioned?

your bible might have a few pages missing check out Matthew 28 19-20, Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

if you want to accuse somebody of adding words, better address your accusation to Jesus Christ who made this command

Platten,
I have included the appropriate posts above to demonstrate that puzzleannie was answering the original question of How Catholics Interpret Calling on the Name of the Lord. She gave one example.

As to you repsonse, may I remind you that God is one. One God in Three persons. To call on All is to call on One, and to call on One is to call on All. There is no need to split hairs here when the OP is someone who is newly asking questions to learn some basics.

**Baptising in the name of the Father and the son (Jesus) and the holy spirit is no problem. They are reality and need to be told to people and to be mentioned when baptising. But does that mean people should call on the son and the holy spirit in times of need? That does not mean so.

Also. Jesus was baptised by John. Was he also baptised in the name of the son and the holy spirit?? I hope not. Baptism is very good. We Muslims understand it. It is a sort of pledge. It is rightly written in the bible that baptism is to wash away the sins. So that is why Jesus was baptised?? To get rid of his sins at the hands of John the Baptist??

The verse of mathew that you mentioned is quite a problem. First it is against the earlier strict teachings of Jesus. Secondly, it does not say that people are to call on the son and the holy spirit. You have wrongly concluded that meaning**.

**Also. Jesus was baptised by John. Was he also baptised in the name of the son and the holy spirit?? I hope not. **.
yes he was, the Father spoke from heaven and the Holy Spirit descended upon him, all 3 Persons of the Trinity are present, and from this is instituted the Christian sacrament of baptism.

how about we will interpret our Scripture, and you stick to interpreting your own sacred text and leave ours alone. Have I barged in telling you what your own writings mean? I think not.

. . .Jesus was baptised by John. Was he also baptised in the name of the son and the holy spirit?? I hope not. Baptism is very good. We Muslims understand it. It is a sort of pledge. Since Our Lord Jesus had no sins “to get rid of”, noooooo. He was baptized as a sign of the inauguration of the New Covenant; His entrance into the water is seen as His purifying the waters for those who will later be baptized into His Life, Death and Resurrection. The baptisms performed by John the Baptist were not the same as Christian baptism.

Further, puzzleannie’s point is correct:
how about we will interpret our Scripture, and you stick to interpreting your own sacred text and leave ours alone.

auss1e_guy,

I want to apologize for the distraction from your original questions due to the diffrence between planten and puzzle annie. These things happen.🤷
I hope you are getting the answers you seek.

My opinion only.

Calling on the Lord is devoting your entire life to God. As such, you soul calls out to God as your salvation. As a Christian, it means loving God and because of that love, loving your neighbor as yourself. Christ further said that if we love him, we must follow his commandments.

It is not enough to say Lord, Lord, we must live life as if we truely beleive, and that means helping others and spreading the good news.

Since no one has mentioned it, maybe we should think for a minute about what the name of the Lord is. In the Old Testament, the divine name was given to us. It is YHWH (the vowels were not printed back then). The verse from Romans that you have chosen is likely a quote lifted from the OT, Joel 2:32. So, where it says “Lord” there, in the OT, what would be there in the quote is YHWH.

So, I wonder if Paul is trying to say something here, not only about how to respond to God in our hearts, but also about the word “Lord”. If you read some previous verses to the one you have chosen, you will see the name Jesus mentioned: *Romans 10:9 for, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. *So, who is Lord that we are confessing or calling upon? I think this selection of verses is prompting us to think about that question. Another part of the equation to think about is what the name “Jesus” means if you trace back to the Hebrew version of it. Typically, one is told that it means “God saves”. I think it goes back to “YHWH saves/delivers”.

Here is a relevant CCC quote:
**2666 **But the one name that contains everything is the one that the Son of God received in his incarnation: JESUS. The divine name may not be spoken by human lips, but by assuming our humanity The Word of God hands it over to us and we can invoke it: “Jesus,” “YHWH saves.” The name “Jesus” contains all: God and man and the whole economy of creation and salvation. To pray “Jesus” is to invoke him and to call him within us. His name is the only one that contains the presence it signifies. Jesus is the Risen One, and whoever invokes the name of Jesus is welcoming the Son of God who loved him and who gave himself up for him.
Also, the bible

*Psalm 121:1-2 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. *(KJV - how I have it memorized)
