Well, as it so happens, not everyone celebrates thanksgiving. I was told that thanksgiving wasn’t a religious holiday. I myself do celebrate it of course. The traditional feasts itself I’m not to crazy about.

To me, Thanksgiving is a day that the family and friends can get together and enjoy a meal and sit around and chat.

However, I don’t feel that it’s a MAJOR holiday, but it is a day of unity and brotherhood and love… a day in which maybe we could do some acts of charity or love and just show the LOVE that we’re given…

Thanksgiving makes me think a lot about those who have gone on and how blessed we are to have had them in our lives no matter how lengthly the amount of time was… and it prepares us even more so for the coming Advent of Our Lord… it just brings joy and thanks.

It’s also a day we should enter into the Gates of Heaven with Thanksgiving in our hearts… enter into God’s courts with Praise… let us just say this is the Day the Lord has made, and we’ll rejoice for He has made us glad… you know what I mean?

Wow… I’m starting to think that I’m on the right path, even.

We had a good meal today, we celebrated ours a few days later due to a relative who couldn’t travel… so we went to them and celebrated.

Thank you Jesus for Thanksgiving!

I’ve run into families who don’t even celebrate thanksgiving.

Only because everyone else does. It’s not a religious occasion, so it has no meaning to me. I don’t even particularly like the history behind it. I only celebrate it because it is expected and it’s just tradition. But the time off is really nice. 😃

Eucharist means “Thanksgiving” - I just take this day as a special day to give thanks for what He has been blessing us in the past 11 months – especially, I thanked Him for the “Eucharist”.

I will have to get back to you, I am in the midst of my scripture search for references to pecan pie, sweet potatoes, and giblet gravy. Yes I celebrate thanksgiving at every Mass, since Eucharist means thanksgiving. I celebrate the national holiday since I am an American, if it is not a religions holiday, in every place it was celebrated in the early days of European settlement–Plymouth, Jamestown, St. Augustine etc.–it was celebrated by religious people consciously offering thanks to God, so I will celebrate it as an American as long as I am allowed to do so. I have no doubt the anti-religion nazis will be attacking this holiday next promoting “self-congratualation day”.

It is a day to give thanks for the many blessings in life and for family. That is what the settlers intended as they did come over to the new land to practice their religions and worship God - a day to reflect on making it through the many hardships with God’s grace.

It is a wonderful time to gather family and friends and be together. For many families, this is the only time of the year that such is done. That alone is reason to praise God and give thanks for yet one more year of being with the people we love.

And THAT is why we celebrate Thanksgiving.

It is OK to celebrate holidays that are not Holy Days of Obligation ya know.

You don’t like the history behind it? You mean the part where the Indians were inspired (surely by the grace of God) to share with and help the new European settlers instead of letting 'em starve to death or attacking 'em while they were weak?

Isn’t that sort of selflessness something we should be both thanking God for and praying to emulate ourselves?

Heck, I’m not even American but I love the idea of a national day of thanksgiving - just wish it’d catch on here!

I’m just finishing reading for the 2nd time, “Mayflower,” by Nathaniel Philbrook. A must read for history buffs.

Edward Winslow description of the celebration was more in tune with a harvest festival, as celebrated in England, than anything religious. However, the Pilgrims placed religious overtones on everything they did, so they would’ve given thanks to the Lord for their harvest. At the same time, the sachem of the Pokanokets, Masasoit showed up 100 Indians, which were twice the number of the total Pilgrim population. They brought deer, turkey and some other foods, not for thanks so much as a symbol of friendship, as this was the first visit of Masasoit to the Plymouth colony. The event turned into more of a Native celebration, than a thanksgiving celebration than what we celebrate.

It’s also a good opportunity to celebrate capitalism and private property and their triumph over the tragedy of the commons. LOL

Precisely because it is NOT a religious holiday, is the reason why it’s the ONLY time my family can actually get together (everybody!). SIL is a church music director so she is tied down to her church for religious holidays.

I like the food, and gathering everybody together, and no pressure for presents and decorations. Very relaxed.

YES! Each year, the local Alano Club (a meeting place for alcoholics and addicts in recovery) has a Thanksgiving Dinner. Some of us contribute money. In my case, $60. Some buy the food, some do the cooking, others bring in side dishes. A couple of hundred people show up each year. Addicts, alcoholics, their family, their friends, and anyone else who wants a free meal. There is no charge for the dinner. A good time is had by all. 👍

So I guess you have a problem with Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Columbus Day?

All of these days have phenomanal meaning to me and 10’s of millions of others, as does Thanksgiving, which is simply a beautiful day to celebrate with family and friends…

Yes, I celebrate Thanksgiving. It seems to be a time when many families gather when they might not do if it was not a holiday. Although there may be a false sense of communion in some families, at least they have the opportunity to come together and hopefully correct the problems.

That being said, I don’t really think of Thanksgiving as a “holiday.” Yes, we celebrate it as a holiday, but it seems to me it is more of a special day when one can relax and celebrate the presence of one another.

I don’t know if I have this right, but is Thanksgiving basically celebrating that the Pilgrims and the Natives of America played nicely and shared?

Good post Annie, why not celebrate it? Yes it is technically a secular holiday but that is no reason American Christians can`t celebrate it and make it also a day to thank God for personal blessings as well as blessings to our country, most of which by our actions lately are undeserved. So I guess we should really be thankful the Lord has put up with us as a nation this long.

Yes. It’s a time for our family to gather, it’s a time to reflect on the many blessings we have to be thankful for and it’s another excuse to eat my husband’s awesome gumbo and rice dressing. God BLess.
