Do you do an examination of conscience daily? Before you go to sleep, do you review your day and where you may have said something you shouldn’t have or acted in a way you shouldn’t have? Do you do it more than once a day?

From New Advent:
Of the particular examination of conscience St. Ignatius is generally considered as the author, or at least as the first who reduced it to system and promoted its practice among the faithful. It concentrates one’s attention on some one fault or virtue. On rising in the morning we resolve to avoid a certain fault during the day, or to perform certain acts of particular virtue. About noon we consider how often we have committed that fault, or practised that virtue; we mark the number in a booklet prepared for the purpose, and we renew our resolution for the rest of the day. At night we examine and mark again, and make resolutions for the following day. We thus act like careful businessmen who watch for a while a special portion of their mercantile transactions to see where losses come in or where greater gain may be secured. St. Ignatius further suggests that we impose upon ourselves some penance for every one of the faults committed and that we compare the numbers marked each time with those of the preceding day, the total sum at the end of the week with that of the preceding week, etc. (See CONSCIENCE; DUTY; SIN.)
Okay, I’m not asking if one follows the Ignatian model, per se, but do you do an examination of of conscience daily?

I do it twice a day generally. Before going to sleep and Midday as well. I usually go to Confession every day in the afternoon so it has been a very helpful practice.

I don’t follow the Ignatian model.

Hi Anathama,

Do you think you do it twice daily BECAUSE you go to confession daily?

Greetings TrueLight,

That is a good question. I do it because someone once told me it was a tradition to do it.

However, I do the midday examen because I do go to Confession in the afternoons. Now the one at night, it is actually worked into my prayers before retiring at night. However if I do not go to sleep and stay esN%re 4Uu1ise somally do the one examen at midda.D

I practice the Daily Examen, in the Ignatian tradition. What you quoted from New Advent, while partially correct, is a very small understanding of what the Examen really is. You can check out this link for more information on the “Ignatian Tradition”.

I try to do it twice a day, mid-afternoon and at night before I go to bed.
The practice has been very good for me! 🙂

I voted for examination most days. I know I should do it daily, but for various reasons things don’t work out that way. Perhaps I should mae a resolution to start doing it daily in Lent.

Me too. I do an informal examine probably every day, but it would be very good to be more intentional in my examine.

Yes daily at Compline. Not a scrupulous detailed one, more in the sense “have I lived up to my obligations and God’s expectations of me? Have I been kind and charitable? Have I put in an honest day’s work? Have I lost my cool? And have I been able to avoid my habitual sins?”

Some times though I’m so tired I just flop into bed, say a quick confiteor, recite compline and fall asleep.

I do an examination of conscience not everyday, before confession and some days.

Im curious, if you go every day to confession, what happens if you dont really have anything to confess one day? what then do you say? Im asking because there are days when I want to go to confession, but I dont have any mortal sins to confess… can one just go and receive a blessing if there is nothing to confess? I think its a great idea of going to confession as often as one can go…

Greetings Thomas31,

There is always something for me to confess. I don’t fall into mortal sin everyday, thanks be to God for that. But there are vices that I am working to overcome. There are times where impatience gets the better of me. There are times where I can be quite sarcastic and angry at times too. With me, I have been seeing and learning how venial sins too can wound my Union with God, though not like it does when I commit a mortal sin. It is out of love that I wish to divest myself of my venial sins as well. We are called to be perfect as He is perfect, and any shortcoming on my part is a fall from that perfection.

You are right it is a good idea to go to Confession as much as possible. Sometimes I will do my examination of conscience using 1st Corinthians 13. Were there times I was impatient or boastful? ect.

I do the Ignatian model of the daily examen, once around lunchtime and once mid-evening while I’m still alert. As in all things spiritual which require reflection, I find it not only spiritually challenging, but mentally and emotionally useful as well. Google something called The Lunchtime Examen, and there is a series of videos on how to do it. Altogether, if I spend twenty minutes on the examen, it would be a lot, for me, anyways. I don’t do daily confession, but go maybe every two or three weeks, and the stupid venial sins which seem somehow to pop out like a reflex are a good subject for reconciliation.

Greetings Luvtosew,

My circumstances in life is where I can go to Confession every day. I usually strive to do it around 1500 hrs each day. It depends on what my Confessor is doing and the schedule that both of us are having to keep.

I see you usually have a set time. I thought maybe that was so. God Bless.🙂

Greetings Luvtosew,

However I did want to say we do spiritual direction twice a month normally. I find it most helpful to avail myself of the Sacraments considering the work that I do with deliverance ministry. Man have I got some stories that you will the hair of your neck. The demons know all of our sins and take extreme pleasure in tormenting us with them until they are confessed and absolved.

The power of Confesion is amazing.

God Bless,
