Well, bells are used at the reformed Mass, as well. They may not serve a “sacramental” purpose but they do serve a ceremonial one, at this point, even though their use might have originated in practicality. All of the Mass’s ceremony, in fact, originated in practicality.Another point of order for the above is that the “bells” rung by the Altar Servers do not serve a sacramental purpose. Their sole purpose is to “awake” the congregation - who may be distracted - to what is sacramentaly occurring on the altar.
