Do you ever wear blue jeans to Sunday Mass?

No you dont…you think we should all go out and spend money on clothes that you deem right for Mass.
Nope. Society has deemed appropriate dress. I submit Mass demands the extra effort.

I submit we should all dress in our Sunday best and not what is convenient in our own mind. The justifications are amazing.

I guess so…considering that the cermoney was not in a church it was outdoors and they (the couple) rode up to the priest on motorcycles 🙂 and the bride wore white jeans & t-shirt and the groom was in black jeans and t-shirt
Not every wedding is religious ceremony like a Catholic wedding…so not all of them require “fancy dress”
Karin,
Are you talking about a non-Catholic wedding here?

Actually, your answer brings up some interesting questions. It is one thing to not be able to dress up and it’s another thing not to because you don’t want to. Now you say it’s a waste of money. Why is it a waste? Is it a waste because you don’t have it? Or is it simply a waste because you don’t want to spend the money for an outfit to wear one day a week?

I think I would actually agree if I didn’t have the money to “waste” and wore a certain kind of clothes all of the time due to the activities they engaged in all week. Bascially, I woul have to have clothes to, for example, work in and this doesn’t leave anything left over. I’m not sure I’d think it was right if I had the money to spend but didn’t spend it. Wouldn’t it then be giving out of your surplus rather than your treasure as in the Widow’s Mite? Of course this all begs more questions. Do I have little caprices I could give up for Our Lord. Can I skip that ice cream, cable, DSL, so that I can afford to "convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of this moment when Christ becomes our guest " as best I can?

Of course, I don’t know your situation and maybe you simply menat that you couldn’t afford anything more. Remember, my whole point is to give the best you can do for God whatever that may be.

I would assume since it was 1. outdoors and 2. since their was no Mass and 3. motorcycles where involved the answer would have to be nope it was not a Catholic wedding…it actually was a Protestant wedding 😃

So okay then, …the original question was: “Do you ever wear blue jeans to Sunday Mass?” It wasn’t about a protestant service of any kind.

Sunday Mass is a place where the Real Presence is … I would assume most protestant churches don’t have to worry about that.

For me spending money on “special clothes” is a waste of money…especially if I can only wear them on one day of the week.
We are a “frugal” family!
Dear Karin,

Would you not buy special clothes for the most important person, our Lord even if it is only for one day a week? Suppose you were to have a private audience with the Holy Father maybe 15min of his time. A once in a lifetime experience. Would you wear jeans or a nice dress if you had a choice (you wouldn’t have a choice they wouldn’t allow you to see the Holy Father in jeans)? ** Even if we only had one second with our Lord nothing is too good for him.**

How many hours did our Lord suffer on the cross for us?

Is it too much to ask that you honor our King, the King of Kings by dressing in your Sunday best one day, one hour a week?

Ahhhhh! Choice is a good word! Do we choose not to dress up for Our Lord or is it that we can’t for some reason? One is a choice we make and one is assumed out of our control.

I’d submit that if we chose not to dress up for our Lord, if we could, that that might not be the best idea! OK, if we put it this way, how many would agree? disagree?

I agree!
The Once a Week clothing statement makes me laugh!
How many days a week does this person wear her clothes??? Sorry but for common cleanliness, I wear each set of clothing only one day. Especially undies!

I am always amused by these discussions. They are usually about someone else’s attire, and rarely are they complementary to people. I try not to pay that much attention to what someone is wearing, though, sometimes, I hate to say, it is hard not to.

In general, I like to follow what a priest told my confirmation class a long time ago - Imagine that you are going to meet the most important person in the world. It might be the president. It might be the pope, it might be your grandparents :). Whoever it is, imagine how you would dress. Wouldn’t you put on your best clothes to meet them? Sure, they’d be happy to see you, no matter how you were dressed, but wouldn’t you want to be at your best, to look your best, whatever that is for you?

Now, that person that you were going to meet? God is their father. How much more would you want to dress nicely for them?

actually I was replying to a poster that asked what would you wear to weddings…he/she did not specify Catholic wedding or other faith 🙂

I wear a different outfit each day of the week…**but I am not buying something that I can only wear on Sunday as it is too impractial to wear any of the other 6 days (**dresses are impractical for me as I go to the park with my kids and do go one the jungle gyms etc.).
I wear a clean bra and undies each day and I also wear a clean outfit each day of the week…I too am kinda big on the cleanliness issue:D

Yes, but what about when you are pretty familiar terms with that person, and you get together every week for a family meal with them? Wouldn’t that level of intimacy make you a little more relaxed? Sure, you would probably not wear raggy blue jeans, unless you were a teenager, but you probably wouldn’t wear formal clothes either.

Of course, the first time you were introduced to that person (equivalent to 1st Communion or Confirmation) you would probably dress to the hilt, but meeting every Sunday for dinner, I would hope you’d be relaxed enough to not feel compelled to dress so fancy.

Cool, then we are in agreement on the clean undies “in case of an accident” issue 😉 but don’t you ever have an outfit for non-park days? You don’t own a pair of dress pants or a nice black skirt? What if there is, God Forbid, a funeral?

As a mom of six, I’m in the same boat as you far as my other 6 days of the week. I’m in jeans and a t-shirt right now. I’m not really sure I could say there’s ever anything impractical about dressing up for Our Lord in the Real Presence. That would mean that it’s impractical for just about any mom. For me, it’s a matter of can I do it or can I not. I can afford to do it. In fact, I’ve always been able to dress at least a little better than I do the rest of the week even when we didn’t have two nickels to rub together. Really, if you think about it, I can shop at Wal-Mart and buy 1 skirt for less than $20 on sale and I could wear that every week to Mass if I had to. In fact, I do this when I’m pregnant. I have one dress I wear every week because it’s just about the only thing that fits that, as the catechism states, conveys “the respect, solemnity, and joy of this moment when Christ becomes our guest”.

LOL!!!
The last funeral I was at I was still pregnant with my son …wore maternity clothes then. But if a funeral came up now I guess I would be forced to go and buy some black jeans (joking) well at least some black pants of some sort.
And nope…my wardrobe is basically sweats, jeans, khakis and shorts for the summer (but these never are worn to mass)…and then throw in blouses, t-shirts, sweaters and tank tops(those dont get worn for Mass either). When I retired 6 years ago I got rid of all that 9-5 clothing YUCK…nylons, dresses, skirts…one word for them all YUCKY!!! I hope someone is getting good use out of them since I gave them to Good Will.🙂

Really, no matter how much poor catechist instructions we throw around, the Holy Mass is not a Sunday meal.

I think my analogy is rather apt. It’s a weekly get together at the Eucharistic table.

If I thought I was going to meet God face to face every week, which I do, I would want to dress up for him. It’s not about being relaxed, it’s about showing respect for Our Lord. Equating Mass to a family dinner simply doesn’t work. It is not a simple meal. The apostles didn’t call Jesus friend, they called him Lord.
