Do you ever wear blue jeans to Sunday Mass?

I went to Mass at the neighboring church again, and again the lector, a different one this time, wore blue jeans. Also, one of the Eucharistic ministers wore them. Sat vigil Masses are more casual, I think. Plus, this church must be more casual. I would rather that the lectors wear nicer clothes.

But, as always, it’s better not to judge because we don’t know the individual’s situation.

Since we are not very well off, I only have about 4 pairs of pants, and they are mostly dark jeans. I try to wear a really nice top with them 🙂
My jeans are not ratty, nor do they have holes in them. My husband has nice pants to wear, and he sometimes wears jeans, sometimnes not. He has business slacks that he purchased for himself when he had a very good paying job. I never usually bothered
at that time to buy dresses. I would now if I could afford it. ( ankle length only ) Since Iam a Traditional Catholic, ( not SSPX )
I prefer to wear long dresses, and when I can afford one, I will go and buy me one. i was at a very nice second hand clothing store the other day looking for one, and they didn’t have one 😦 I’ll keep looking! 🙂 God bless you all! 🙂

I’m off for the next few days and I think I’ve beaten the horse long enough 👍 If anyone has anymore questions for me, personally, please PM me and I’ll get to it when I come back. Have a nice weekend!

I said never in the poll, but after I posted the reply, I realized that I do wear them on weekday Masses (now I feel bad about that). For Sunday Mass though, I was raised that you dress up. So me and my children dress up. I do tend to go along with the theory that if possible and you have the ability to do so, you should dress like you are going to be in the presence of a King. I think that regardless of how many times you meet with the president or the queen of England, you would take time to consider your dress. I just think, and this is only my opinion, that it is the little, seemingly inconsequential things that are slowly chipping away at the overall reverence of the Mass. That dressing down(when you could do otherwise) or “visiting” during the sign of peace, or having your cell phone go off (actually saw someone answer it and leave Mass to talk to the caller), slowly devalues the Mass. I worry about the message that these things send to our children. Maybe that is why so many Catholics now say that the Eucharist is strictly symbolic. Before I get blasted, let me say that I do not think that wearing jeans means you are a bad Catholic or that you think the Eucharist is symbolic! I just think that with the steady decline in respect and understanding of the Mass, maybe we could all go a little more out of our way to show outward signs of our respect of the Mass. Ok guys, just please be gentle with me, as I do not mean to disrespect anyone. JUST MY OPINION
I agree - -I do not wear jeans to church unless I’ve decided to whip the car around at the last minute and go to mass – and that’s not very often with small ones who will get mad at me for not taking them…lol. I wear “nice” clothes that I’d never wear otherwise – i.e. no running to the store, driving carpool or whatever in these clothes, mostly b/c they’re uncomfortable to my “prefer comfort anyday” kind of self, esp at my “bump” stage right now…that being said, I think when you dress a bit “up” for mass, you tend to hold yourself a bit higher/taller and it helps keep a certain sense of propriety that seems to be slipping away these days. When I was on active duty, we had blues or BDUs…suit-like or “pajama like” uniforms…neither was allowed to have wrinkles etc, but one was DEFINITELY more comfortable than the other - -my point here is that you walked into an office full of BDU folks, and people had their feet up, they were “kicked back” in their chairs, slouchy, and generally “less military looking” than the office down the hall where everyone wears blues…hard to really relax back in your chair with shirt garters on ripping the hair out of your legs (I imagine - my leg hair was never an issue…he he). For me, my kids behave differently when they wear nice clothes – they know they have Church clothes, and Play clothes…and that they are for different things (i.e. there’s no playing in church…lol) – it works well for us. And I cannot stand to see altar servers (whatever the gender) dressed crummy to serve on the altar just because they will have robes on…

that being said, I try remind myself to be happier that people are there and receiving graces than hrumphing about what they’re wearing…I hope, that like I did, they will start with baby steps coming to church even in casual attire (which obviously means they can’t possibly worshipping with their whole hearts and souls if covered in “casual attire” my goodness!!), find their way into the Word, and come to their own understanding of “celebratory attire” of their own desire rather than b/c of dirty looks from the likes of me (who really is no better than any other sinner, only dressed differently).

My mother goes to daily mass in jeans (flannel lined) and the warmest clothes she has – which aren’t always up to “par” with what some here are suggesting…why? Because she leaves the church and spends the next 4 hours sidewalk counseling outside an abortion clinic in the rain, sleet, snow and ugly winter weather of the northeast…she’s been spit at, called obscenities no woman should ever have to be called, threatened with arrest, had snowballs thrown at her, etc for the work she does – she helps at least 1-3 women per week choose life…yet I’ll bet there are plenty of people who judge her as “that woman who can’t be bothered to dress nicely to meet the Lord” – just something to think about

I have to laugh…if my husband decided to show up at Sunday Mass wearing a Tuxedo (my husband does own his)…this is what he would consider his “best clothes”…I guess I would have to wear my strapless gown then to match him 😃
Whoops, I should have been more clear that I meant best clothes, excluding formalwear. I still have my wedding dress, but you won’t find me in the pews in that. 😉

:rotfl: Well then I guess our best clothes are jeans

I never wear jeans.

I personally am rather skeptical of most things modern (though obviously not a computer 🙂 ) and most people would say I dress like an old man…oh well, I call it forward thinking. 😛

Jeans are not modern. They were developed during the gold rush days from the canvas covers that were used to protect items that were sent to the gold rush communities.

I just find it funny how so many people are concerned with how others dress. As long as the dress is modest and clean, I have no issues with what people wear to Mass. I am just happy that they are there.

I live in jeans and so I worship in jeans. If they aren’t blue then they’re black. So long as they are clean and not painted on or holey, I don’t think God cares one bit.

If that was all I had to wear and they were raggedy… still don’t think God would care.

I personally think that there are far more raggedy people at Mass than there are clothes, and THAT is what going to Mass is all about. Renewing the people not the things that they wear.

It was like that 2,000 years ago when Jesus was among us, and it still is…when Jesus is among us.
Pax vobiscum,

I don’t find it funny at all. Those people who dress like tarts or gangbangers are examples for the younger kids in the parish. When the adults don’t think about the example they are showing, that is just a shame.

I was much less concerned about all this before I had kids.

As I said, as long as the cloths they are wearing are clean and modest.

Jeans do not fall into the category you speak of.

But… If what others wear at Mass is the example your kids go by, then there are other issues there.

Have you seen some of the jeans?
My philosophy is that one wears his/her best. If you read my posts you will know that I just wore jeans for Benediction because it was my weekend to clean the bathrooms. There is a reason why a person may wear jeans EVEN when on a normal basis, one wears a dress.
As for what you said highlighted in pink
snicker
You must not have kids or perhaps you don’t know them as well as you think.
Mine are 5 & 8. They notice what the teenagers wear and mention it in the car on the way home. Good example or bad example, it’s noticed.

As a parent I can assure you, at some time, you will hear " well everybody else" does it. – How come she/he/they can do it and I can’t? Look at what everyone else’s parents let them wear…

Kids do copy what they see.

I occassionaly wear Blue Jeans to Mass BUT I never wear them if I am gong to be on the altar-either to serve or read.

:hmmm: In Sacred Scripture Jesus never criticized someone’s attire … but he did criticize those who were judgmental.

That is a strawman.
If Jesus saw the way some people today come to mass, he might have thought of including it in the Gospels.

Again, if jeans are your best, they are your best.
If you have slacks or a dress and choose those jeans for comfort, you should evaluate who you are going to see.

Geez oh man, Our Lord breathed life into us and gives us all we have. Can’t we muster up what we would wear to a good friend’s wedding and not a day at a picnic? It’s an hour, that’s all He asks.

And also, this is a discussion forum. If we can’t discuss it here, without being told we are not “Christlike” where can we?

Plus, Jesus is a King!
What would you wear to go see the king of your land?
