Do any other non-Catholics ever feel they are far more accepting of Catholics than Catholics are of them.

I’m Catholic, and I apologize for answering this, but sir (or ma’am) , your dead on right, and it breaks my heart to say that. I am ashamed of my fellow catholics for that reason.

Your right 10,000 times over.

I personally feel that way but I think the faith community that probably has to endure the greatest number of taunts and insults on this forum is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints.

Definitely,

I’m sorry that you feel this way, and I’m even sorry-er that you have reason to feel this way 😊

However… and this is the alert that I’m about to un-apologize a bit, but it’s with compassion and generosity… it bothers me that so many non-Catholics reject the Catholic Church, reject Catholic Teaching, reject all-things Catholic (or some combination of these rejections) and then want to say, ‘we’re all the same’ or ‘we’re all in this together’, and wonder why a Catholic responds with, ‘but you rejected me/us/This.’

I wish that every one would be Catholic… faithful Catholics… I also believe that most of the people who are Protestant have little to no knowledge of the Catholic Church or teachings, so that when asked, ‘why don’t you…?’, their response is based on this… but then, no interest or attempts to get to know. :o

I can invite you to my house for movies and dinner, but if you tell me you want nothing to do with Black and White movies, and will not eat lamb, and that’s what I’m offering, when I have the dinner and movies again and you are not invited… have I offended you, or have you chosen to not partake?

(I think I’m doing better with my analogies) 😊

I don’t think he is.

It has been my observation that Catholics, here or otherwise, are just as accepting of Protestants as persons as Protestants are of Catholics as persons; perhaps more so.

What at least many Catholic are not so accepting of is others’ religions. But then, the Catholic Church claims to have the fullness of truth in matters of morals and theology. That’s incompatible with accepting the religion of another as equally valid. But then, most (but not all) Protestants don’t accept the Catholic Church as equally valid either, otherwise they wouldn’t be “protest-ants”.

Well, I would say that if it is ‘not accepting’ to insist that Truth is Truth, and ‘accepting’ to go the relativist route and not make waves, or to think that there is more than one ‘Truth’, that Catholics would appear less ‘accepting.’

Jesus was a very ‘accepting’ kind of person in that if any one approached Him, even the worst possible sinner, with repentence, Jesus would forgive them.

But Jesus did not say that the sinners could ‘keep on sinning.’ Neither did He say that it was all right for **one person, or for one group, to sin, but not all right for others. **

If your faith tradition believes that there are ‘many paths’ and ‘many truths’ and that all Churches are pretty much the same provided they ‘believe on Christ’, then they **are **going to be accepting in that they have an inaccurate view of the Truth, and by that ‘inaccurate’ view it appears that all sorts of things are ‘acceptable’.

But if your faith tradition believes there is One way, One Truth, and that there is ONE Church with the fullness of truth, and that other Churches have some truth but if they depart from the teachings of the One Church they are in error on those parts. . .then they are going to look ‘less’ accepting.

But is ‘acceptance by other Christians’ your ultimate goal for salvation, or is adherence to the truth your goal? Certainly it is nice to be accepted, but if you’re wrong, acceptance by lots of ‘friendly’ Christians isn’t going to get you salvation, is it?

There is a bit of irony to be found in this thread when one considers how, and why, Catholic Answers was founded. Perhaps there would be no CA had the Protestants that Karl Keating ran into been more accepting 🤷

Not saying that Catholics can’t be just as bad.

God bless

My problem is that when you say you are having lamb and B&W movies and I say I like them and you tell me I can’t have them because you don’t like the way I hold my fork and that I don’t put enough butter on the popcorn.

I often tell people since I teach at a Catholic School and am married to a Catholic and am literally surrounded by 90% Catholics that I am a protestant who lives in Catholic land, speaks Catholic and knows all the customs — yet people are mad when I from time to time speak so much as a sentence in protestant.

In what sense?

In the sense that it is a tenet of Protestantism that we can’t really know for certain, so anything goes, then yes, Protestantism is definitely “more accepting” than Catholicism is, of divergences of opinion on matters of faith and morals.

However, I have heard way more “funny” little jabs and digs against Catholics in Protestant conversation and even in sermons, than I have of the same sort of thing from Catholics to Protestants - the majority of Catholics that I know in real life, apart from converts and those who work with converts, don’t appear to be aware that Protestants even exist, or what they actually might believe, and so the subject doesn’t actually arise in their conversation.

I had a spiritual director once who was astonished to find out that I had once been Protestant - he told me he was under the impression that the heresies of Protestantism had been dealt with at the Council of Trent. (He came from a predominantly Catholic country where the minority people are atheists.)

It’s ANY forum. Those poor people are the treated like rubbish by us fellow Christians.

We should be ashamed.

A cousin, who didn’t know that I have left Catholicism called me last night to ask me to be Godfather to his daughter. The whole family used to be Baptist and now they’re converting to Catholicism.

I told him that I thought it was great to be Catholic, that Catholicism has much that is good in it, and there’s a reason the Church has been around for 2000 years.

Unfortunately, to some in my family though, I’m an apostate and heretic who will most likely burn in Hell.

I go to CC with my hubby and I probably am Protestant in my heart. The people i go to Mass with and even our Priest never acts like some have here. Myself I do try and respect others religion, sometimes I miss the mark. But we should all be charitable to all in Christ’s love.👍

OK… but is that what happens?

If I say, I’m having Black and White movies and Lamb, but if you are going to come over and talk through the movies, and if you are going to fill up on pizzas before the Lamb is served, and I am offended by that, I won’t be inviting you

… then you fill up on pizzas and come in and begin to talk through the movies…

you are not welcome.

NOT because I don’t want you there, but your actions, your behavior all tell me that you really don’t want it.

Let’s get out of this muck called ‘analogy’

If a person is not Catholic, and as such, is not permitted to receive Catholic Eucharist, as this is a Sacrament from within the church, a keystone of the church, and you, a Non-Catholic, say, 'That’s not the Body and Blood of Christ. In my church, we eat the same thing, because it symbolizes the Body and Blood of Christ. I want to eat that Body and Blood of Christ… well, you are not welcome.

Be offended, you may be, but you would be seriously, way more than black and white movies and lamb seriously, offending me and our Mother Church.😦

That, however, doesn’t give any one the right or reason to say, ‘Oh, Crimey, a lousy Protestant!’

You may be able to talk the talk, but you aren’t living the life.

If you do not believe in the tenants expressed in the Nicene Creed enough for you to go through the conversion process to become a Baptised Catholic, you are insulting our faith to try to say that you ‘speak the language’ and ‘know the customs’, because my faith is not language or customs. 👍

I don’t think it is fair to speak with such generalizations.

If you are equating behaviors on a forum with bahaviors in life, then you are not comparing apples to apples.

I think you also might be over looking that alot of the posters on this forum (as well as others), have a posting history that can affect how they relate to one another.

I am going out on a big limb here, but I would say that most people on this forum show everyone acceptance, until they are given reason to treat them otherwise.

This of course excludes those posters that purposely come here to stir the pot so to speak.

Lutheranteach,

I’m wondering if you mean specifically on CAF or in life generally?

I’ve dealt with more blatant anti-Catholicism in real life than I care to stomach. Additionally, I cringe every time on these boards when I see a (fellow) Catholic respond to a non-Catholic without the spirit of charity. There are some posters I usually agree with on a technical basis but the abruptness and authoritarian style of delivery really turns me off.

But then again, I’ve never been on “Methodist Answers Forum” or “Baptist Answers Forum” so I don’t know how someone of a catholic persuasion would be dealt with there.

Most Catholics I personally know are very charitable.

I don’t think they are treated like rubbish. I have Mormons over often. I bake cookies for them and we talk theology. In fact, now that I think about it, I entertain more Mormons than I do Christians.

I don’t see how, although I will say that the mainline protestant denominations are more accepting now of Catholic Christians than they were about 50 years ago.

I get more guff from Catholics than I do from protestants anyway.
