Do you feel embarrassed when you tell a person that you are a Christian and their eyes Glaze over.

Its like hitting a wall .the discussion quits.

Specifically a catholic. When I mention I’m a Christian, they tend to to assume I’m a very cool Christian that thinks the Bible is flawed and it’s just a good book, that God’s moral law changes with the times and so on. The moment I say I’m a Catholic, I’m suddenly intolerant.

They dont believe me. For born again christians, most of them believe that they are the only christians. But im not embarrased.

But mostly they just seem to know, don’t they. Anyone who knows doesn’t seem to raise an eyebrow about it.They just accept it, and make allowances that I’ll need to go to Mass first if some planned event is Sunday.
Is it an age-group issue? Are younger people more affected by what their peers believe or practice?

I know I am doing the right thing. I got called ‘almost psychotic’ this morning. The conversation was around no sex before marriage. It’s the secular world. It just doesn’t understand…it thinks it’s new, trendy, modern,

At least it’s invoking a reaction.

Hm? I don’t recall that ever happening to me. What I recall is what happened this morning, they start dredging up all sorts of anti-Christian or anti-Catholic propaganda about the Inquisitions and how Christians killed so many millions of people, etc.

And this is a person that I count amongst my friends.

So, count yourself lucky.

I remember in High School, when the bell at a catholic elementary school next door started ringing, I mentioned how I thought it would have been cool if the church I went to had a bell like the old ones do. The student I was talking to mean-spiritedly made fun of me for believing in God, and when I got angry he said that as an atheist he was well within his right to mock my deep-seated beliefs - not just to disagree, but to insult.

When I got home and told my family about this, my Grandmother was the only one who sympathized with me. My parents - who mind you are both Catholic too - felt that I was the one in the wrong for making a church reference and that I should never mention religion in public, even in an innocuous way like that.

If someone thinks our faith is a bad thing then that’s their problem, not ours.

The UK is very secular so my answer is yes. I do have some good atheist friends though.

I say I’m catholic,because that’s who I am.Sometimes I’m called very religious and I’ll say no,just religious

I say Catholic or Roman Catholic because in USA, “Christian” usually is taken to mean something like fundamentalist or evangelical or Baptist or something, and also if the person you’re talking to is one of those, they may not consider Catholics to be “Christians”.

I usually don’t talk about religion with people though, unless they ask a question or bring it up first. In the past I started long open discussions on some forums frequented by good friends of mine, just to talk generally about religion because it was interesting to me (didn’t have to be just about Catholic, any religion was okay to discuss). The discussions kind of devolved into a few people with an extreme dislike for religion doing a lot of church-bashing and just expressing their anger and unbelief generally. I understand in most cases how these people ended up thinking like they do; some of them were raised in very oppressive religious climates and had to deal with a lot of judgment and bias being inflicted on them by people that were often less educated or less responsible than themselves. But I get tired of hearing the bashing nonetheless. I also notice that when someone’s life is going badly, a lot of them find a pet peeve to whine about on the Internet all day, whethe it’s Trump or religion…the minute they get a better job or a new boyfriend, all of a sudden they’re too happy and busy to complain.
