Do you find it hard in today’s society?
I am a Catholic in my late twenties who loves my faith and tries my best to follow Jesus. Currently in my country there is a same-sex marriage referendum coming up and the yes vote is pushing the agenda so hard with social media, radio, television etc… Supporting it and painting the no vote in a bad light. I have read comments on social media that have said “your old fashioned if you vote no and to move with the times” or “typical the Catholic Church to appose of it and the sooner the better the church is finished”. It worries me when I read comments like this which is often I guess it’s a fear I have of when will it all end? I feel I’d be laughed at for practising my Catholic faith or praying in public. The world has got so anti God and church and are for everything that offends God. Another thing is if you were to defend the church on social media you would be attacked and bullied so much so that you ended up wishing you had said nothing.

I used to feel as you do. I do get upset still sometimes about the state of the world, but there are a few things I did to help:

1.) I unfriended people on FB and quit following pages that regularly mocked the Faith.

2.) I use the “ignore” function religiously (pun intended) on FB for posts that I know are going to start fights, etc.

3.) I don’t read comments sections.

4.) I don’t watch news. If I want news I read it and I am careful about my sources.

5.) I quit watching most television, and almost never watch live commercial television.

But most importantly:

6.) I made friends from church. That has been key for me - to not just spend time with other Catholics for religious things, but for social activity and “normal stuff.” It’s a relief to be with like minded people. I don’t completely shut out the world, but it’s nice to have a “home base” I can go to and “be myself.”

I am more than twice your age and find it very hard. The world today bears no resemblance to the one in which I grew up in.

The best we can do is stay as close as we can to Our Lord and His Blessed Mother. Pray the Rosary. If you are able, spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament. And find yourself good Catholic woman friends for support.

It’s discouraging, but I’d rather be of the same opinion as the Lord, and not people who are uneducated on matters of faith and what the Church really teaches about various issues.
As they say, make friends in church.

I think I know where you are from, and have family still there .
We are now in what is known in the bible as end times, that is a time when all the previous morals and values and larger sense of responsiblity is breaking down . It is supposed to happen,God said it would ,before the Judgement would take place .

Among other things the rights of people to do as they please now takes precedent over all other rights ,and most often ,but not always, these rights are the ultimate narcissistic fantasies to do not only as they please in areas of sexuality ,but to have power in the world of the future in science to bypass the laws of nature ,which are the laws of God .

Why does God allow this ? Because finally, and this has never been broached by the Church ,He expects us to decide for ourselves freely, whether we will wish to be with Him or not ,and to do the necessary to get there .

There has never been a grown up debate among the people of the Church ,they are told to believe and what to think .There has been far too much abuse of power within the
Church and this is what happens when you do not listen ,and behave arrogantly .

It is in fact a revolution against the Church . Many in their hearts know it is ridiculous to vote for ssm.as there is no such thing ,but their hatred of this institution is so strong they
will do exactly the opposite of what they say .

I would not in any circumstances vote for this ,as if there is one thing, that can lose your place in the 'kingdom ,it is this . However God lets things happen to warn the Church that it is doing something profoundly wrong ,and has been for a very long time ;

As you will know the French revolution was in part against the RCC who were very much part of the establishment ;Jesus said to render to caesar and to God that of God ,but the Church did not follow this and as a result ,they were forced to by the people .It should have happened in Ireland long ago ,as what happens in time is that people choose freely or not to follow Christ and ,not have it forced on them .Jesus never forced it ,so why do they ?

IIf you want to know about France and this subject ,just ask .

I have written another post, but yes it is very hard ,but you can do something .
People are ill informed ,and when they realise it can change their minds .🙂

Yes, it’s very hard and getting harder. At least they aren’t feeding us to the lions… . . . Yet! One Archbishop noted that this generation will likely die in our beds, their successors will likely die in prison, and those who follow them will likely die martyrs.

Even in my late twenties and early thirties I was very naive, and idealistic, and religious. When facing the world that spells trouble. I walked right into it. I fought the system, corruption when I was pushed too far, ordinarily I quite quiet, in the background. In my efforts to make things right, I was crucified by the establishment. I saw so many things wrong with society. I had four years to think about it. After suffering failure after failure, God finally showed me what was wrong with society and myself. You see, I took my faith for granted, and I expected from others what I expected from myself. God showed me that I had something others did not have, my Catholic Christian faith. He showed me that the secular society could not give me what it didn’t have. He also showed me that I was unfair to those in society that didn’t do the right things, because I demanded what they could not give. He also showed me that I was “self-righteous”, a guy who was always right. He also showed me that I wasn’t fighting secular society but I was really fighting Satan who has a grip on secular society. And He showed me that’s what Jesus came to rectify, and I wasn’t the Savior. When I learned this I completely changed in my attitude, it was a tremendous enlightenment to me. I even tried to apologize to those that I knew where wrong in their behavior because I was unfair to them in my self-righteous attitude. I thank God for this healing. Jesus said to be wise as serpents, and simple as doves, and it wouldn’t hurt to be a little paranoid:) You will find this sharing really helpful in dealing with the problems encountered, especially when dealing and trying to live a life of faith. Expect rejection, and disagreements, and thank God that you are on the right side, and pray for t his blind secular society, for there go I if it wasn’t for God’s mercy towards me.

Wow! Thanks for sharing the wonderful things you learned!

Do I find it hard?

Not particularly. Some things are better, some not.

A couple of examples. My older brother died before I was born at 18 months of age, of a childhood cancer (neuroblastoma). This was in 1958. This cancer is now potentially curable. Back then it was a death sentence. All my parents were left with were 18 months of memories (and not all of them good) and debts because we had no national health insurance then. Think of the hope that parents facing this awful situation now have.

Another example, is that it is no longer acceptable to be a racist bigot. Think back to the segregation laws in the southern US and all the trauma that was required to simply respect a basic human right.

Are somethings worse? Yes, divorce and sexual license are two examples. But are they any worse than:
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of those who by their wickedness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse; 21 for though they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their senseless minds were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools; 23 and they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling a mortal human being or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles.
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the degrading of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error.
28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind and to things that should not be done. 29 They were filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, covetousness, malice. Full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, craftiness, they are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters,[f] insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, rebellious toward parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 They know God’s decree, that those who practice such things deserve to die—yet they not only do them but even applaud others who practice them.
(Romans 1)?

Humans haven’t changed, it’s just we just now have the technology to be faster, more efficient in our depravities. But our depravities are exactly the same ones as in St. Paul’s time.

Yes, I’m finding it extremely hard. So hard, in fact, that 3 years ago I left Europe to take a little break from all that nasty secularism. I honestly can’t imagine going back home any time soon. 😦

Who cares what society says? I personally never feel obligated to do what society says. Society is obsessed with lust, greed, and many more immoral practices. Just try as to do what is right in the Lords eyes, regardless of what society says. Ignore what society, and be your own, unique person. In short, be yourself, and follow God! 🙂

Perhaps it is easy for me to do this because I am (most likely), an Aspergian (one who has Aspergers). I personally feel being an Aspergian is a blessing. I am very glad I never feel peer pressure.

Of course, we all will have some sinful problems, but I personally feel like sin is a badly wrinkled sheet of fabric, and we just need to iron out the wrinkles.

Is it hard?

In some respects it’s really hard.

In others it’s not.

I’m not overly influenced by outside sources. I don’t have cable and I’m careful about what websites I use and where I get my information from.
I go to a secular university but I’m old enough and mature enough to let blatant secularism roll off and I don’t let it bother me too much. I get the work done and move on.
I don’t have a problem defending my faith to others as well. Most of the girls I’ve met who ask me questions have never seen different perspectives before and are too young and too secular to have formed a well thought out opinion about things.

I had a quick discussion one day about abortion with a young girl who is in the same major as me.
She knows I’m pregnant and knows how difficult our schedule is and actually wondered aloud if it would be an option for me to not keep the baby.

I gave her counter argument after counter argument…especially things she had never thought of before and she was speechless. Most of the responses to my questions about the morality of abortion were just met with “I don’t know…”
She is double majoring in Philosophy and had, literally, never been confronted with counter arguments to hot topics like abortion and homosexual marriage. All she knew was they were “rights” and everyone has and deserves “rights”.

I struggle with things on a more personal level. I understand what the Church teaches and I accept that but certain issues like, NFP, make me bitter and angry.

Being able to find a way to space pregnancies that the Church supports, that actually WORKS and gives me personal support has been a struggle.

It’s really easy to want to throw in the towel and be “done” because I know virtually everyone I’m close to…even my husband at times…would understand and would support me in my decision…some would go so far as to say I’m nuts not to get my tubes tied and wouldn’t support me for using NFP.
In fact, I’m about to lose my position in the military because I’ve gotten pregnant too many times and have never been able to go away for training because I’m either at a desk or unable to leave home because I’m caring for a baby.

It’s not in writing and they are too smart to get themselves in trouble with JAG or the AG. I’m currently in an overmanned shop that is looking to get rid of people. They could site me as a failure to train…which at the end of the day is true. I’ve heard it from my direct supervisor that I just get pregnant too often.

My OB practice is another that doesn’t support NFP, my family is another, some of my closest friends and where I work would rather I get my tubes tied instead of struggle with NFP for another 20 years until Menopause.
While the Church says otherwise…I don’t see it bending over backwards to provide resources and guidance in my endevor to be a good Catholic.

So, for a lot of us…the cross is very heavy in certain aspects.

Why so long ;I would have thought sooner .

You have hit on the 'heart 'of why the Church has , is failing both God and it’s adherants .
Far too much pontificating from AFAR . Far too little charity among people in the parishes ; far too little love, and sharing ,and judging others ,and far too much emphasis on personal affairs while ignoring others in need in your neighbourhood .Charity begins at home in the Church .It is the single most important thing which will get one into the ‘kingdom of heaven’ ,while the Church emphasis ‘sin’ instead of charity she has no chance .
As Jesus taught so much the Apostles were bewildered and in asking Him to be clear on what was the most important lessons to emphasise He said " Love your God and your neighbour as yourselves ".
When you love you help to remedy many ills ,like the 'sins 'which come from neglect or poverty ,or war ,or abuse and so on .when you live comfortably you have no right to point at someone and judge them if you have not helped them to pick themselves up .

Right up till now in France the majority of catholics are seen as snobs ,arrogant , comfortable, and judging ,but not charitable . Frances has changed some minds who had hardened as a result of this seperation of the aristocratic catholics, from the working peasant, or ouvrier .
As a result of seeing that I am happy to be a christian and wear a cross , people see that one can be one, without being a snob ,and they begin to ask questions and open up .

Some of them have never ever had a conversation in their lives about this subject ,because the Church speaks not ‘to’ them ,but 'at ’ them . 👍

It’s hard for me to say, because this is the only society I’ve lived in. 😉

But that’s only half joking.

I think you could go through every moment of human history and find hardship for someone somewhere.

Every life has its challenges.

Dear Kelpha: My sister-in -law has l0 Children, now all are married. Her husband asked for a raise (he was an architect) everytime they had a child. His boss said that he couldn’t afford the husband anymore so he quit and worked independently from his home. The struggle was tough, but they always made it. My sister-in-law began to teach swimming, she was quite a swimmer herself, beat everybody in her class, and taught many, many children how to swim. She and her husband turned 80 yrs, and had some serious ailments. Before they did, they use to travel all over the U.S. visiting their children. The kids won scholerships from swimming One became a captain in the Coast Guard, others worked in different businesses. When the parents got ill, the children would take care of them and spell each other. Some of the grand-children were nurses. A real blessing to the parents in every way. Not only that but I have no doubt that God is very pleased with them and will take them home soon! Doing God’s will is the greatest challenge in the world, and pays the biggest dividends, praise God. What is given in love for God and neighbor (children) is never, never lost. And it beats everything this world has to offer.

Same. I have no explanation other than life’s not supposed to be easy on this side of heaven.
