Do you get regular exercise? What do you do?

I was fairly regularly doing some pilates workouts. Then I took a break over the summer due to wedding prep, wedding and honeymoon. I was going to start back up about 2 months ago and then found out that we are expecting! It’s a joy but that means no strenuous pilates for now (just light stretching and exercising).

Would like to do more swimming, but it’s hard now that it’s cold outside and I would have to make the effort to get to the YMCA. These days I mostly just feel exhausted after work lol.

So far, not many people have said they are gym rats. I have had memberships, but paying over $50 to $100 per month on something that is not even being utilized that much is kinda’ waste of money. Then one has to consider how much working out, etc. etc. begins to cross over into vanity.

It’s getting colder here in Colorado now and I need to muster extra motivation to get outside and run when it’s less pleasant outside. But I did get some new running shoes, so that should help!
 
I could never see joining a gym. Spending money each month and then needing to actually go there just to work out in front of a bunch of strangers? Not very motivating.

My wife and I have done workout DVDs, and there are even places like BeachBody that offer streaming subscriptions a la Netflix. Cheaper than a gym and you can do it without leaving your home.
 
I think gym participation or not may be a bit of upbringing or past experience thing or personal psychology question. Some people are highly social, others tend to kind of be exhibitionists, maybe.

I myself was brought up doing competitive sports since junior high into adult hood, so exercising among others is perhaps a bit more motivating to me, or at least, it doesn’t really make me uncomfortable.

I get distracted by some of the women, however, which I don’t think is an all together good thing. 🤔 (even if I am single)
 
I alternate running outside with lifting weights at the gym, and I usually do some yoga poses after my strength training.

If I didn’t go to the gym at least every other day I wouldn’t strength train. I have a kettle ball at home but I feel weird working out in my living room.
 
I would like, to some degree, to do strength training but am too cheap to buy a gym membership at the moment and too unmotivated to do things like push ups and sit-ups etc at home. 😎
 
My wife and I invested in a set of the Bowflex Selecttech dumbbells. They take up relatively little space, but they allow you to lift anywhere from 5 to 52.5 pounds per weight. One of the BeachBody programs utilizes them, which definitely makes a difference (when I stick with it). Of course, carrying my son around helps with strength training, too, as he’s 80 pounds. 🙂

You definitely need to find what works. I see a lot of parallels between physical exercise and spiritual exercise. Sometimes it matters less what you do and more that you do something rather than nothing.

I need to get back into it. Of course, this is the hardest time for me to get started because Christmas cookies are just so tasty. 😝 Definitely by January 1st. 🤣
 
When I was still running, and living in WI where the winters are long, I used zero degrees Fahrenheit as my cutoff point for running outside.
Slather your face with Vaseline to protect from frostbite.
Living in CO, you already know about laying starting with head and hands. The core body will usually take care of itself.
I like a cheap Casio watch for timing. You can still find them on Amazon.
I had Jog, Run, Race memorized. It has a good training program for beginners.
Learned to run my shorter runs on the flats (gives the body a chance to rest), and save the hills for the longer runs.
 
I wouldn’t use it if I did. I have to go to the gym for some psychological reason to do strength training. It’s probably a conditioned response thing.
 
I can tolerate any temperate. 😛 I just get a bit more reluctant. Now, if it’s 0 degrees outside plus wind velocity of 30 mph …I will probably stay inside…but I don’t live in Minnesota. 🤔
 
I like the camaraderie of going to the YMCA. It not simply about working out. I do have a few weights at home that I bought from the $5 and under store for physical therapy. I also have stretch bands.
When I lived overseas, my taxi driver led me to a five star hotel that had a gym membership that allowed use of the pool and the lagoon leading in from the sea. Finally a pool that was long enough for laps. It was an outdoor pool, so I used 20 degrees Centigrade as my cut off as too cold. There were weights at my apartment complex that I never used.
 
I was curious what it was like to be a winter runner in Minnesota…

1989 in the Twin Cities, -49 degrees with the wind chill. ❄️

OK, just about ready to go for my run, and it’s a mild 40 degrees…not bad at all.
 
My neighbour and I go out in Autumn cutting wood for the open fire…
he always kindly leaves me a few “Winter warmers”…tough blocks of wood
hard to split with the axe because of all the knots… so there’s my weight training
I’ve learned reverse psychology on myself works best, if I think"right,i plan
to go for a run tonight" 8/10 times I won’t .So instead if time allows I just do it
without planning .Or ,just run A to B when ever I can.Seems to work…
 
I posted earlier about living in WI. Once the temperature hits the zero degree mark, it all feels the same, but the danger of frost bite increases. I did use zero as my cutoff temperature for running outside.
You lose most of your heat from your head, so a hat is important as the temperatures drop. Next comes the gloves. You may be running in shorts, hat, and gloves before you start wearing longer clothing to cover legs and arms. Living in cold climates, you learn to dress in layers.

I lived a mile from the factory where I worked. People would laugh at me because I walked to work. I was home before most people had windshields cleared.
There’s plenty of exercise shoveling snow. Never knew how deep it was since it froze so quickly. It’s important to shovel the snow off the sidewalks and driveways within a half hour, or it will freeze solid.

Greenfields-- I agree that it is easier to exercise when it is a natural part of your day than something you “plan for.” It becomes a natural part of the rhythm of the day like morning prayer. Autumn seasonal wood cutting is part of the natural rhythm of your year.
 
😹 Back into it again,here’s an easy one to try …everytime I boil the jug for tea and coffee I do sit-ups .
Microwave?Another stretch of some sort for that duration.Fill the kitchen sink?Squats or something.
Same with ads on TV…it all builds up and suddenly it’s easier to run,and you feel limber all over.
