I could agree that your time is part of the 10%. But the purpose of the tithe is to support the physical structure of the church. It’s outreach, its continuing mission in the world.

Prayer should be added on top of the tithe.

we also volunteer for
All of that l ist Evan ? If only our Parish Church members were as able as you are. Unfortunately it is not so, perhaps in the most affluent retirement communities where health and good will reign.😉 Peace, Carlan

It does help that the kids have all moved out, that the blood bank is across the street from where I work. That I don’t have a yard work (when I built my house I left trees, salal, huckleberry, sword fern, etc as ground cover) and my hobbies (woodworking banjo playing and reading) don’t take me anywhere and are inexpensive.

Who knows what I’ll do when I retire. Maybe I can volunteer for even more stuff. But these hours can be an important help to the church and community. They could count toward your ‘tithe’.

Before the men’s club took over grounds maintenance the parish was paying $1000s/year for this service. Now it’s next to nothing.

You shouldn’t keep track of what you give, just give as much as you can. It’s better not to use envelopes too, or get a tax deduction for your tithes and almsgiving. God can see what you are giving, and that is all that matters. And as some others have said, money isn’t all that we can give. We all have talents and different qualities that will add to the church.

It does if you want to be financially sound? Christine not all of us can afford to throw money around like that… 🤷

I’m on student loans, so things are pretty tight, as is my time, so I try to give 10% each week of what I get each month. I’m unable to give to all the extra collections throughout the year.

This is not being prudent with your money. Prudence is a virtue. By getting a tax deduction, you can figure that into your giving and increase the amount you give.

The reason for the tax deduction is to encourage you to give more.

The more we give to the church, the less people have to rely on the govt for support.

You should give to your country too.

Thing about Americans Christine is that we hate taxes… We won our independence over taxes lol…

“Taxation without representation.”

Personally I think it’s dumb… But most Americans here hate government and taxes…

I am going to start my career life and determined to give 10% to the church or poor people, is it practicable? and are you doing it?
You give what you can without being injurous to thyself.

Realise that tithing, Biblically speaking, is not about giving 10% or whatever but all about setting aside a small portion of your income to ease peoples daily stresses when they’re about to throw a nutty.

This is why St. Paul tells his pals to fetch another glass of wine for that guy whose wife is being all a-pain in the neck.

Yep slightly off topic though ,but gotta say America is a great nation of shared responsibility and it costs to be a part of it . It isn’t free.
Yes, America is a great nation as is our beloved Church…it must be realized by all sides we cannot live in it for nothing, financial responsibility must be shared by both.;)🙂
Peace, Carlan

No one is arguing that tithing and giving money to the Church is a bad thing… It’s just some people have to give at different levels and percents. I give about 4% which is what I am able…

I work for a small Catholic social services agency as a community organizer… My wages are well under $30,000 a year… I’ve got a mom and dad in nursing home. I’m also guardian to three children since my sister and her husband passed away…

Believe me when you have three little mouths to feed, clothe, and take care of 10% becomes a big chunk of change…

I give what I can and I devote my time to the Church…
You are giving more than 10 percent in time and money but raising your sister 's three Children. It is amazing that you are still able to give 4 percent the church.

That is one I struggle with especially since my country supports abortion and any monies I give goes to support it.
$487.4 Million in American tax money, actually- just for Planned Parenthood (Planned lack of parenthood more like it). They did 329,455 abortions according to their report from 2009-2010.

I don’t pay federal taxes as they are not taken out of my retirement. I haven’t even tried to get a job because of the same reason you stated. It makes budgeting interesting, but, I work it quite well. I refuse to pay for the murder of thousands of children. And if my contribution is only $0.01, it’s a penny given in the name of abortion and that’s murder.

I refuse to pay for assassins against the future generation.

We give only around 4 percent to our parish ( gross income) and another 1 or 2 percent to other charities. My husband has problems with his company that put us heavily in debt. I am a stay at home mom with 4 kids. I do volunteer work. Teach CCD, communion service at retirement home, pro life ministry, bake for different events, donate food, clothes and Christmas gIfts. I want to give more money and volunteer more. I try to increase how much I give as often as possible.

I wish that I was more involved with the church when we were wealthy.

When/if you recover to your former financial position, remember this bold portion.

It seems your current station in life, as frustrating and trying as it is, has brought you more into the Church.

You could have let it lead you away out of anger or any other myriad of foreseeable, common reactions; I think it’s the power of your family’s character through Christ that has brought you closer to the Church.

No, I do not give 10%. That is not a requirement.

Also, the way my parish is run, I would not be a good steward with my money if I did that.

We give to the parish, volunteer at the parish, and give to other charities.

Though I find it difficult at times to make less than our bills, I thank God for bringing me back home. It took 4 plus years and much anger and bitterness but I am now at peace and putting all my trust in God. I had to hit rock bottom before returning to the Church. I would rather have God in my life than millions of dollars. It has also taught my children valuable lessons.

There are several opportunities to be whole financially again and this time I will be more
generous. I have already downsized our lives so we do not need as much.

My husband and I gave 10% to our old church (and the Catholic Church when we started going) because it was taught(in the old church) as the right thing to do. 10% gross meaning 10% of all of our paychecks/tips and 10% of our tax return.

Now my husband has taken a large pay cut and we have a house now, which is more expensive, so we have fallen very low in our giving.

I would say this is a difficult thing for most people. It amazes me how easy it is to find excuses not to give. I have heard everything: I don’t know where the money goes, I can’t afford it because I don’t make enough, I will give when I start making more money, the church is rich, and it goes on and on… If you make $400 per week, you give $40, If you make $4000 per week you give $400, it’s all relative I believe. I also believe you cannot out give God. All we have comes from God, when we give we receive.

I do know that there can be devastating times in life that can effect us financially. I do not judge anyone, let your conscience be your guide. Once we learn to give we will be amazed how much we receive.
