Do you go to Mass while on Vacation?

Just checking to see if any of you go to Mass while on vacation - no matter where you may be?
 
I take the opportunity to go to Daily Mass on vacation! I can’t always do it when I’m working, but one of my favorite parts of the little beach resort town we go to is the parish church - absolutely full of people every morning!

I really enjoy Mass on vacation. I love going to different churches. When I’m at home I feel a little disloyal if I don’t attend my parish church each Sunday. I know it sounds silly, but I think Father will miss my family us if we don’t show up. 😉
 
We ALWAYS try to go. But, only once, on our honeymoon, did we fail to because we we on a Greek island with no Catholic Church and no ferry service on Sundays!! There was one church, so we went to the Greek Orthodox service and just prayed and had no idea what was going on…couldn’t believe that the one island we picked for the weekend had no Catholic Church. We went to every Catholic Church we could find for the remainder of the trip. That was the only time it was physically impossible for us to get to mass on Sunday!!
 
Where we go on vacation there’s this beautiful Catholic church, but when we tried to go to mass there they called it a “Summer Mass” held the whole thing in a half an hour, ran through all the orders of worship, sang the most horrid monotone hymns and had absolutely no passion about anything going on around them … everyone in attendence looked like they just sucked a lemon!

So we don’t go … I can’t go to THAT and call it church, instead we bring our Bibles and our ‘At Home with the Word’ and do the readings and discuss what they meant with the kids.

One of my favorite childhood memories is that of our family attending Mass during vacation. While we didn’t have a lot of money, my Dad always made it a point to take us somewhere over the summer. Mass was never an option, and there were times we had to drive many miles out of our way to go, but that memory has stayed with me.

In my younger adult years when my faith wasn’t as solid, there were times when my husband and I skipped mass while on vacation. Not anymore! God’s commandments aren’t suggestions, and I feel it’s important to keep holy His sabbath by always going to Mass, no matter where we are or what the circumstances (even if the Mass isn’t what we’d like it to be).
 
Yes…I really enjoy going to Mass while on vacation (and swiping a bulletin for my own personal collection 😉 ).

It’s awesome to know that no matter where you are, you’re almost guaranteed to have a Catholic church close by. I’ve been to some great Masses at some distant places.
 
I love to try new and different churches while on vacation. I have always loved the old, beautiful ones, the older the better.!!!

Our most memorable one was on a skiing holiday and we went to a Christmas Eve 11:00 p.m. at an old church in the snow. It was snowing and we were all cozy singing Christmas carols. It was fantastic!!! Then we fought a few feet of snow trying to find our car. What an adventure!!!

I feel just because you’re on vacation, it’s still Sunday --God’s day wherever you might be.!!!
 
I sure do. It’s imperative. For example, son is in the Air Force, so when I visit him and his family, I make sure to find out when and where the Mass times are wherever I may be. He knows to let me know too.
And speaking of vacation, I’ll be at my family reunion in Columbia, Maryland this August. Does anyone of a church that I could attend. Of course it goes without saying that the Church would have to be one faithful to the Magisterium.

Donna, I urge you to either visit ww.masstime.org or call 1-800-Masstime and find another Mass somewhere nearby to attend.

We always find a church, even if it means a considerable drive, and twice we have had to rearrange vacation schedules so that we could fulfill our Sunday obligation, postponing other activities by a day or so to fit in Mass.

And I thought I was the only one who liked to collect Church bulletins! 👍

I realize your intentions are good, but mass isn’t about the “beauty” of the service or the hymns or the passion of our fellow communicants. Mass is about the Eucharist, something we can’t do at home with our families and our bibles. The Eucharist requires a priest, even a less than faithful priest. As long as he follows the prescribed norms for the consecrating of the Eucharist and the host also is as prescribed, the sacrament is valid and you have fulfilled your minimum obligation.

At the same time, I would encourage you to see if there is another accessible parish near your family vacation location that might be more suitable. (see www.masstimes.org) If that’s not an option, your idea of bringing the bible and having family prayer time after mass is an excellent supplement! It would make for an excellent enhancement even if the Liturgy were well presented! 🙂

Yes we do. Even if we just go for a weekend of shopping, we always make sure of the times of Mass where we usually go. I enjoy going to different churches.

Actually, I got to go to church in Austria, while in a singing competition .

Hearing the Mass in German was an amazing experience.
 
We also enjoy going to new/different churches on vacation. However, I have a dilemma to post here. This Sunday I will be leaving on a very early flight from the West Coast back home to the midwest. Most likely, because of the time change, I will not be able to go to Mass. Sat vigil is not an option because I will be attending a family event at that time. Any ideas, or do I just miss it with the understanding that it was truly impossible to get there this one time?

Going to Mass on vacation is part of the enjoyment of a vacation for me! Even my daughter likes visiting different churches. As a matter of fact, where we stay is partially determined on proximity to the church, as I try to have it in walking distance (we usually summer vacation at the shore).

Someone mentioned earlier about feeling disloyal to your parish if you’re home and attend a different church. I feel the same way. Since I talk to my priest frequently, I let him know when we’re headed out of town, but he does know I attend a TLM on some Sundays, but always take my daughter to our regular parish Sunday Mass since she’d come out of a TLM High Mass lifeless.

Just to present the other side of the coin. I do not know if this is an indult for the entire USCCB, or if it is just issued by our local Bishop. But we are excused from Mass when travelling.

Now, if we are staying somewhere on vacation, we will go anyway. But if I am actually travelling on Sunday, I have occasionally missed Mass and not felt one iota of guilt, nor was it something I confessed. After all, I have had many Sunday’s where I spent 10 hours or more travelling, by the time you include travel to/from airport, waiting for connections/baggage, waiting for late flights, and waiting for connections. And although I often get the chance to go to Mass anyway, if I miss it after a day like that, so be it.

I personally love going to Mass and wouldn’t miss it - even on vacation. I am a little concerned about the quote on the USCCB … :mad: :mad: and that we are excused from Mass when traveling :eek: . I think that is a good thing to really get what the Bishops are announcing … and I just think it is horrible If there isn’t a church/Mass available I can see it … and even then, I was taught (doesn’t mean it is right) that you go on one day of the week that you missed.

I am going to research - not to prove you incorrect - just to see - Is this another abuse our Bishops are telling us. It is scary to me!
