This thread proved to be a sad one for me, since I realized how many churches were changed, redecorated or whatever the word - as a result of modern times. I can only vaguely recall the large churches of my childhood - perhaps then, too young to appreciate their beauty. But in adulthood - I appreciate whatever’s left of the old stained glass windows - still intact (unbroken by vandals) and images not modernized in appearance. Altars and statues not removed (be they the main or side chapels) - I now cherish any church I re-visit, which may still have not have completely changed. Those who haven’t removed completely or moved to the rear of the Church - statues depicting saints - venerated for years. Remember? Those small side altars flanking the main altar or along either side aisle of large churches - almost like mini-chapels, like tiny churches in themselves, still with candles to be lit, with statues (the old ones - not modern) of the Infant of Prague, Our Lady in her various titles, saints depending upon the locale and, therefore, always a surprise on one’s first visit - sometimes wondering, ‘who is that saint?’ And the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
These are the memories of the beautiful churches, so many, so long ago - which are now fading. I have two in mind, which I will leave unnamed. They are both very old, changed considerably both by the years and changes in neighborhoods. And oh, the churches of different rites - where one walks in and finds gloriously shining icons. I wish I could name one favorite. I wish none had changed.
Sorry for going on this sentimental trip.
