Do you have a Personal Relationship with Jesus?

Faith in its esssence is a relationship. Jesus is a person. Through faith I have a personal faith relationship with the person of Jesus Christ. Like other intimate relationships, there is no replacement for spending time with one another in order to grow deeper in intimacy, knowing, recognizing the subtle movements and nuances which characterize your beloved/Beloved; to the point that conversation can become a distraction. Goose bumps and all at the sight/presence of your beloved/Beloved, through arid times and peak moments alike. Your greatest fear is to offend the love of the other/Other. Beyond words, really …

I am very eager to have a “personal relationship” with Jesus! I am just waiting until I find the place in Scripture where it says to have one, but until now my searching has been in vain! 😉

God Bless,

Anna

Tip of the iceberg for starters:

Matt.11:29 “Take my yokeupon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

John 10: 3-5, 16, 27 “To him the gatekeeper opens; the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know thevoiceof strangers. And I have other sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me;”

John 14: 17 “even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you.”

Romans 8: 9, 11 “But you are not in the flesh, you are in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Any one who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit which dwells in you.”

1Cor. 3: 16 “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”

I have a very close relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord even though I have only strengthend it recently. As a child I used to only have a relationship with the Father. I know that it wouldn’t offend God at all if we only honored one of His persons. But I know that God is three in one and one in three. So I feel compelled to honor Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (I have also started a Novena to get to know the Holy Spirit. Presently, He is the Person of the Trinity that I know the least. Here is the text of this Novena of anyone would care to look at it: catholic-forum.com/saints/novena20.htm) Recently, the closest I have come to Jesus was when I converted and became an Anglo-Catholic. Of course, the Holy Eucharist, as many people have said, is the most perfect and divine encounter with Christ that we will experience on this earth besides Adoration. But I have found that Catholic tradition offers a very easy way to Jesus, especially through devotion to the Sacred Heart. Also, meditation upon the Holy Rosary; Our Lady always shows her Son to me.

It is unfortunate that Protestants have a terrible view of our relationship with Our Lord and God as a whole. Protestants think that the ritual we practice gets in the way of honoring God, especially veneration of the Saints. I have showed my Protestant friends several times in Revelation where it speaks of the Saints praying for us and how they can only lead us to Jesus! But, they confuse this as worship and don’t find it necessary.

I have learned to build my relationship with Jesus from the Protestants. I attend a non-denominational youth group every Friday with my friends and praise Our Lord with hand clapping, jumping, hand waving, and other things. I believe that the Mass and contemporary worship can be side by side. But contemporary worship canNOT be in the Mass. The experience in a non-denominational youth group is somewhat like the experience of Adoration even though Christ is not phsyically present there you can feel Him in your heart by the aid of the Holy Spirit. I hope to continue to build my relationship with Our Lord as I grow as a Christian and Catholic.

Tip of the iceberg for starters:
Dear felra, Thanks, but I think you didn’t quite get my point.
Matt.11:29 “Take my yokeupon you, and learn from me;
The question is not, “Have you taken Our Lord’s yoke upon your shoulders?”
John 10: 3-5, 16, 27 “ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me;”
The question is not, “Do you know and follow the voice of the Lord?”
John 14: 17 “even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you.”
The question is not, “Do you know the Spirit, and does He dwell within you?”
Same thing.
1Cor. 3: 16 “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”
Again.

You see, felra, this is what the Church has taught for two thousand years. Not once did you use the words, “personal relationship with Jesus Christ.” Yet, this is the hackneyed (sp?) approach of people who have neither the slightest idea of Church teaching, nor, in many cases, the meaning of some of your quotes.

It is the finest example of no-think, touchy feely, dumbed-down theology wrapped in poorman’s pseudo piety. I think it is best answered, initially, the same way.

I appreciate your effort, but please understand that I think my best response to a sola-Scripturan who might approach me with this question, is to ask for the exact Biblical reference to a “personal relationship with Jesus.” That way, we can sit down together and read the Bible…and search…and search…and search. :thumbsup

I should add; No one ever asks me. :crying:

God bless, 🙂

To get a grip on the question, “Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?” is directed towards people who perform religious traditions based on routine without love and passion for our Savior. It is also directed to those who don’t know Jesus as Lord and Savior. No one should say, “Hey! He/she’s a catholic lets ask he/she that question”.

We shouldn’t get to hung up on words and ignore the fact that Jesus hung on the cross for us.

One of the great examples in the Bible is the theft that ask Jesus to remember him. The theft didn’t take communion nor was he baptized. I thinks this is what matters most. I’m not catholic, but I have a friend who is catholic. Because of the love we both have for our Savior, I believe we’ll meet in heaven one day.

:blessyou:

*1 Corinthians 13
  1. IF I [can] speak in the tongues of men and [even] of angels, but have not love (that reasoning, intentional, spiritual devotion such as is inspired by God’s love for and in us), I am only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.*

Well, watch did you expect from a Catholic response to your question? I am out of this thread folks! …in fact, I am going to go hang out in the Spirituality forum for a while and console myself. 🙂

Small note: I’m glad you mentioned that you weren’t Catholic, because you referred to Holy Communion as something one “takes.” For Catholics the Eucharist is something received; to “take” it would be very presumptious.

I would still like a sola scripturan to show me where it says those words in Scripture, since such people are the ones who use that phrase, and they say that their sole authority for everything is Scripture.

It’s nice to know that you have a friend who is Catholic (upper-case C).

Blessings,

Anna

BlestOne:
I got into a heated arguement with one because he banged his knee and it was swollen twice the normal size and when I suggested that he see a doctor, he said he was going to let God heal him…it reminded me of that man on the roof during a flood joke. So I told him I thought God gave man the knowledge to learn how to heal his fellow man. Boy we got into it after that.
BlestOne, I’m sorry that that what was said between the two of you was so horrible that it drove you to start smoking. Check out Matthew 9:28-29. You will see how powerful a thing faith is. Keep this in mind next time someone mentions just letting God heal them. It’s not to offend you. God is our healer, why spend lots of money and time at a doctor’s office when you can save the money and time for something that will Glorify God? Luke 17:6 " The Lord replied, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” Even the smallest of faith can work miracles!

Also just to touch on something you had also previously mentioned - we are called to proclaim the gospel (the Good News). Luke 9:60 “…but you, go and PROCLAIM the kingdom of God.” Not just show, but PROCLAIM. And of course, there are those that proclaim it to glorify themselves, and God does not like that, but there are also those that are so caught up in being religious and so devout to the church, that that can become showy. Jesus totally did not like the pharisees and priests and all those pompous religious people. Only God knows our hearts, and because of that truth then all we need to do is just love everyone and allow God to work in our lives according to His will. Psalm 46:11, “Be still and know that I am God.”

May God Bless You!

I totally agree with you JD! Great response, simply and clearly put! Thank you for that.

So after reading the different responses from everyone here I felt that I should also share my 2 cents worth. I’m a Catholic, who most definately has a relationship with Christ. However, it was not always like that, I grew up as a religious kinda gal. That was where I got lost. I got so caught up in my church, in my CCE classes, my RELIGION…and left Jesus in the dust. Unfortunately, this is true for many Catholics.

I have many Protestant friends who totally respect me as a Catholic Christian and the Catholic church itself. Why is it that we are constantly out to get each other though? The way I see it, there is no one church that is better than the other. I have seen good and bad in both. Who truly has the right to judge another church, unless that church is clearly going against God and the Word?? Then it should definately be questioned.

I have been told that I’m going to hell because I was a Catholic. Now, when that was said to me it was true. Not because I was a Catholic, but because I truly was NOT saved. It is by God’s grace alone that we are saved, not how good or religious we are. Jesus said in John 3:3, " Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." We need to be born again, or “saved”, by the Spirit to go to Heaven. And yes, if you love the Lord, then, you should be obedient to Him. But we are all in one way or another selfish, that’s our nature. “All have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God” (I can’t remember where that verse is exactly but I’m sure everyone has heard it.) It is God who changes us, and makes us into a new creation. It is He who brings out the good in me, not my own actions. Also, read Galations 2:20,21, it says, “yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given Himself up for me. I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.” So it’s saying, we are renewed completely by God’s grace, and we now live by faith in God. So, if “justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing”…well then that means that if we are saved by our actions according to the law, then Christ’s death on the cross wasn’t sufficient enough for us to be saved, it was FOR NOTHING. However this is not so, because God threw out the laws of the Old Testament and made a new covenent with us. Which was that He would send His Son to die for us, His blood would cover our sins. Read Romans 7:1-6.

I encourage you to read Galations 3. That should explain alot. I have stood up for the Catholic church many a times, I am not so much of a traditionalist as others, but do see the major frowning upon on the Catholic churhc. However, I can’t agree with the church on this one. The church has many good aspects of it, not everything we do is completely Biblical, I don’t see it as wrong though either, we are more of a “sacraficial” church compared to all the others. Although, in respect to the argument of Faith vs. Acts, I am convinced that it will not be our acts that get us into Heaven, we have to start somewhere and that is at faith. We must submit our lives to God, and then He comes and makes us new. It is He who works through us, it is His glory in the things we do.

You can be a good and moral person and not know squat about God, does that mean you go to Heaven? I don’t think so.

I am a Christian. I think that’s what is important, are you a Christian or not? God is not going to base our entrance on whether or not we were part of this or that church, no way! When we die, it will be, was this person a follower of Me? That’s what Christian means, to be a follower of God! How are any of us going to lead others to Christ when we are too busy bickering between each other about who is right?

We should not base our “personal relationship” with Christ on how often we go to confession, or our communion on Sundays. Those are all special parts of our denomination, however, they do not grant us our salvation. It is Christ’s blood, I know that’s always going to be sufficient for me.

God Bless You All!
  • BlestOne, also read Matt. 23. It’s about the jesus’ denunciation of the scribes and pharisees for being pompous and religious.

I sincerely looooathe that question. Probably because it usually comes 2.3 seconds after I’ve said “I’m a practicing Catholic.” What that question also says is “Oh, that’s nice. So, you know nothing about Jesus or the Church, scripture or history. Let me tell you why I’m more enlightened than you, and you can join my sect that emphasizes our pastor’s spin on the Gospel.”

If you make a point of discussing theology with Protestants for any length of time, pretty soon you start to wonder if they’re even Christian. Things like arrogance (which yes, I suffer from) are enshrined as virtues. Arrogance is virtuous when you call it “trust in your salvation through Jesus.”

Nowadays I’m more likely to respond to the question, “Are you saved?” by asking another question: “Why do you reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ and worship yourself?”

Thanks for your loving responce Confussed7. How are any of us going to lead others to Christ when we are too busy bickering between each other about who is right?

I think this was a very important question. I’m sorry for mis-typing Catholic. I quess we all can’t get along. I was in the Marine Corps years ago. One of the biggest strategies was to divide and conquer.

So much hate. 😦 Where does that come from?

Love ya any way, but please don’t respond.

Good-bye to post.

Your question is do I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ?
  1. I am Catholic so how can I not have a personal relationship with our Lord?
a) In Holy communion I am one in Christ through accepting Jesus’s body, blood, and devinity within my own body. Think about that the next time someone asks you to be saved. Tell them you are part of and one in Christ.

b) In visiting and devotion to Christ by going to see Jesus in the monstous I can speak with, listen to, and pray in a quiet and relaxing hour with our Lord.

c) In celebrating the Mass I can go to bible study, praise and sing, ask Jesus for forgiveness, and re-enact Jesus’s passion.

The list by being in communion with the Catholic Church goes on and on. There is finality and decisions that are made by the church and not just the making of another church because I or someone disagrees.
To have a personal relationship with Jesus was not an easy option when He was here on earth and is not now. If you have a personal relationship with Jesus then I would like to welcome you back on your journey to the Catholic Church. The One, Holy, Catholic, and Apolstolic Church.

Remember in reading scriptures the bible states church not churches.

🙂 To Confused 7 🙂

I have a few questions not as an argument but more of trying to understand your rationale.

I hear lots of scripture from you so I am understanding that you do know the Bible well.

Ques: 1 Does the Bible say Church or Churches. Peter you are the rock I will build my ?_________ You fill in the blank.

Ques: 2 In the Catholic Church why does one get Baptized?
______________ You fill in the blank.

Ques: 3 When you reach the age of knowledge ( knowing right and Wrong ) you are Confirmed. What are you confirming? ___________ You fill in the blank.

If you eat my body and drink my blood you will have eternal Life.
If you do not eat my body and drink my blood you will not have _____________ You fill in the blank

As far as going to church when I knock on the house of the Lord when my time comes I do not want Jesus to say I do hot know you go away.

I do not understand your statements, I am in communion with Christ’s teachings through his church, the bible, and try with all my heart and soul to follow his commandments.Jesus made all things new but read the whole bible and you can relate the old with the new. Jesus was the new Adam “The Pascal Sacrafice” and Mary the new Eve. Jesus never said do not follow my Fathers teachings but to combine the old with the new. Jesus said to visit the sick, cloth the naked, and feed the poor as what you do to the least of these you do onto me.

Just ask yourself and do some reading find out when and why the protestant denominations split from the original Church. Read all pros and cons. Yes the Church is not perfect as it is on this earth.
The church will be persecuted but thats scripture.

Keep reading, use your concious, and make the journey back home 👍

You can’t get more personal than that! So why do we cringe or draw back when people ask us that, as if our relationship with Jesus is inferior?

Take Care and God Bless!

Well, I would hope that we don’t cringe or draw back. But what our separated brethren are asking is whether our souls are being united with Christ and not just our bodies.
