I was thinking of canceling cable, and just use hulu/netflix. Do other people do this? I wanted to get rid of the bill, and spend less time with our toddler watching tv.

We just have Hulu and Netflix too. We don’t even have the basic channels hooked up.

Our reasons aren’t exactly noble though. My husband and I are more into the Internet and video games when it comes to entertainment. TV would just be a huge waste of money for us.

My darling and I have never had cable at any time in our 15 year marriage. We do not miss it. (And we do not even have any basic channels, though here in Japan basic channels are just worthless.)

Never had it (except for a six-week “free” trial) and never will.

Two reasons:
  1. There’s never anything on, even though there are dozens (or hundreds, depending on your plan) of channels. Many times, my husband and I are staying in a hotel, and we turn on the TV, and spend a half-hour flipping through all the channels looking for something to watch. It seems that every time, the only show that looks at all interesting is that re-run of the deadly snakes special–I think it’s on Discovery or Animal Planet, or maybe both–all I know is that it’s ALWAYS on whenever we stay in a hotel.
  2. There’s always something on, and it’s too easy to sit down and get captivated by something that isn’t really worth an hour of our lives. E.g., during our six-week cable trial (free), I found myself fascinated by the show with the midgets and pit bulls. Now how stupid is that?! I also watched endless episodes of hoarders, which actually gave me nightmares. Again, what a stupid waste of my life.

My parents got some sort of new version of the old TV antenna. I don’t remember the name of it, but it was around $200. They get around 7 or 8 channels.

I have an antenna in my apartment so I get about 4 channels. I watch the news and shows on PBS. I also love to watch Steelers football. Aside from that I’m glad I don’t have cable. I had a hellish case of mono about a month ago and took three weeks off of work. During that time I went to stay with my parents (i’m 26 and live alone in a city with no very close friends). They have direct TV so I watched a lot of that. The week I was with them was the final decision maker for me: I will never pay for cable tv. Even if the show is decent, the commercials are obnoxious at best. I wouldn’t want to give my children the opportunity to see that. I don’t think I would have this same opinion if I watched TV daily. I find it harder to see how terrible it is when it is on as background noise every day. Finally, I can’t justify paying for such an expensive “want.” I’d rather buy new backpacking gear or something for one of my hobbies.

just netflix and basic cable (which amounts to 20 some odd stations).

We use hulu occasionally but not often enough to pay for hulu plus

We got rid of our cable after DD was born and don’t miss it at all. In fact, during this election season we’ve realized how blessed we have been to have been spared the endless political commercials.

We subscribe to Netflix and Hulu and have Roku hooked up to our TV. Even though we have the Roku I usually watch programs on my laptop instead of the TV. DH is a big baseball fan and subscribed to a service through MLB that allowed him to baseball games through the season. Although I think you can’t watch the game if it is blacked out which wasn’t a problem for my DH since he’s not a fan of the local team.

In the 3 years since we got rid of cable, I’ve never found myself missing anything. Everything I’ve wanted to watch has been available online or on Netflix. And it’s been such a blessing to our family to be spared “children’s television.”

Many are on the way out, I still have cable, although I’m thinking of doing the same, I tend to go nuts listening to the same **** over and over.

the news you can find online, most sites allow you to stream.
and netflix and other sites cover my tv 🙂 in fact at least you dont get ads all the time and can watch a show from start to finish 🙂

you can download netflix and youtube etc on ps3 so no real issue now to have it.

I tried going without it, but I’m a sports junkie and I missed live games too much.

Did not for a long time. I never use net flix or hulu. We have Dish. I have thought about getting rid of it to save money–but it is our only form of intertainment–we never go out to dinner anymore and the last movie we saw at a theatre was The Passion. We get no premium movie channels but I do get a sports package for $5 a month–which gets me pac 12 sports and cycling. I also enjoy the cooking channels–we do a lot more cooking these days now that we don’t eat out. And we get EWTN. I’m not big on watching stuff on the computer.

Peace,
Mark

Well, I have DirectTV. I always have the TV on for white noise – but I’m single and half the time I’m not really watching it. I’ll be sewing or doing craft projects or reading – yes, I read with the TV on:D I am a football fanatic and would go nuts if I couldn’t watch my Aggies on Saturdays during football season. Most of the stuff that I do really watch, though, is not on regular TV – I watch HGTV and Investigation Discovery most – and some of the cooking channels.

I don’t think I’d do well without TV just because the house would be too quiet.

No cable. We have netflix, and connect the computer to the TV to stream football through ESPN somehow. DH does it. We get two local channels (rural), my city parents have about 15 channels, no cable.

Our 3 yr old watches 1-2 shows a WEEK, usually on the weekend or Fri night. She’s the only one not princess crazy or “other character” crazy at school… the difference between kids who watch tv all the time and the ones who do not is amazing- I’m a teacher there.

We got rid of cable almost 2 years ago. Honestly, I don’t miss it at all. We don’t even have local channels since I can’t stand antennas.

We don’t have cable. We have basic TV (a digital converter box with rabbit ears) and we pay for Netflix. I find there is plenty to watch or in turn, plenty to do if there is nothing to watch.

Dh would like to get cable for the sports (mostly football), but personally I am sort of happy that we don’t.

And I agree with Cat, there seems to be nothing on, or in turn you end up watching a lot of dumb shows. When I had cable, I watched a lot of food network, Mythbusters/dirty jobs, CSI marathons, or Ninja Warrior. All great shows for an occasional watching, but not worth the hours on end watching I did in college.

We have cable, mostly for live sports. I love sports, but I wish we didn’t have cable, to be honest. So many times the TV just drones on and on in the background with no one actually paying attention to it. Then I turn it off and The Husband calls from around the corner, “Hey, I was listening to that!”

Before we got married not only did I not have cable, I hadn’t owned a TV for seven years. Happy times. Got a lot more done in those days. Miss the silence.

I don’t have any cable and never really have. I had it for a few months and found that there were only a few decent shows. All the rest were not very good. Most were downright indecent. And always there was a subtle. anti-christian, anti-Catholic, anti-life, bias in all the shows.

We just have a DVD player, and choose movies from the library, buy them, etc.

I am starting to lean toward not having any king of video entertainment at all. Just reading and music. Also radio! When my kids were younger we homeschooled and we chose not to have a TV at all. This was for about six years.I remember those years being busy, but peaceful years.

Does anyone else everthing we might be better off if we just got rid of our television sets and quit letting ourselves be brainwashed? Really started listening to what the Holy Spirit is trying to say to us? Instead of filtering God through all the nonesense on TV?

We still have it, but we’re on the verge of letting it go. There are 500 channels and it’s all garbage. (I would miss EWTN though.)

“Honey Boo Boo?” Really???

That right there should tell you everything you need to know. Cut it OFF.

we don’t have cable or tv just just Netflix or other websites lol… we found a place to watch a certain showtime show every week…

when I go to my parents, I just watch TLC, Animal Planet and the Weather Channel lol.
