Do you have ODA? (other-denomination attraction)

Attraction as in desire to join, no.
Admiration of the good qualities other groups have, yes. For Catholics, Lutherans, Muslims, Baha’i, and all the other groups that are on here.

The attraction is to the music programs among the Baptist and Pentecostal congregations from which I came. I give myself a participative dose every now and then 😃

I think almost everybody does, it’s part of our Western love of foreign exotica.

Me, though I have gone through deconversion at one point, attending others’ religious worship just from curiosity isn’t my thing.

I love the Eastern Orthodox liturgy.

And even though I think the Baptists are so wrong theologically on issues like sacraments, I do admire a great deal their zeal and commitment to morality in this ever changing world we live in. Go to a abortion clinic where there are protestors outside, and they are likely both Catholic and Baptists.

Not any more. The Catholic Church was my ODA 🙂
Yep! Here too! 😃

I do still enjoy reading about people’s views of other faiths, but it’s because I want them all to come to the fullness of the catholic faith.

(This question was, incidentally, inspired by the I’ve always wanted to ask… thread, where Protestants and others discuss why they choose to participate on a Catholic forum.)
Is it a disorder? 😃

I agree, but Peter may have specifically meant denomination, as oppose to virtues of their members. Or maybe we can be attracted to aspects of the denomination’s faith?

Catholics should have attractions to all faiths which adore the God of Abraham. And then, the particular practices that are in line with Catholic faith in which they excel.

Then again, admiration is different than attraction, right? For example, I have admiration for aspects of the Amish religion, but I’m not necessarily attracted to it (feel compelled to join or adopt anything).

It depends on what you mean. I mean I like the Baptists who can quote the Bible verses word for word chapter and verse. I don’t ever want to be Baptist though. I think Catholic should be able to do that too and I think it’s sad that we can’t. I honestly think more folks in general should read their Bible Catholic Protestant Orthodox or other.

Odd that you should say that, because when I was writing the choices for the poll, I considered breaking them down like “I’m proud to have ODA” vs. “I wish I didn’t, but I do have ODA”, but then I decided to just do a spectrum of choices (amount of ODA) .

I also considered having one set of answers for Catholics, another set from Protestants, etc.

🙂

I admire a number of other denominations: Anabaptists, for their fidelity to the Gospel, very strict Protestants (Puritans), for sticking to traditions and moral values firmly. The denominations which use only the KJV- this is a practice which I admire greatly (although I’d be happy with the DR or Vulgate too).

Odd duck here. I have ODA big league. Was removed from my cradle faith and spent almost half a century seeking for it. I found a little in the Southern Baptist Church, a little more in the Pentecostal church, some in a non-denominational church, not much in the Presbyterian Church and a lot in the Lutheran Church. The Eastern Orthodox helped me learn the most about my cradle faith.

Yes… and no.

I love certain aspects of other churches - but I fully know that they too will break my heart just as my own church does as the church is a hospital for sinners.

I too, have admired the Amish, but I don’t think I could be Amish. Do they have converts?

I think I used to have it before I converted to Catholicism. Mine was for the more traditional denominations, I attended a Methodist church for a while, went to the Episcopal church a few times, was a bit attracted to a Lutheran Church for awhile, I have no idea which type of Lutheran but they had a nice new building and the parking lot was always full.

But once I found the Catholic faith, or it found me, I could never belong to another. Kinda silly but the Catholic Church is my soulmate.

Nope. I am satisfied. It would be like taking down the masterpiece painting and settling for a poor photocopy.

I do respect other people’s journeys, however.
