Do you have ODA? (other-denomination attraction)

I think almost everybody does, it’s part of our Western love of foreign exotica.

Me, though I have gone through deconversion at one point, attending others’ religious worship just from curiosity isn’t my thing.

ICXC NIKA
Mine isn’t for the Protestant faiths, it’s for the Anglican Ordinate(?) that’s part of the Catholic Church now. We don’t have one in our diocese, and even if we did I’d be ineligible to join as I don’t have any Anglican roots.

Me too, to some extent. Wouldn’t mind going to an Anglican use Mass

Attraction as in desire to join, no.
Admiration of the good qualities other groups have, yes. For Catholics, Lutherans, Muslims, Baha’i, and all the other groups that are on here.
I liked a Mormon practice of the “Family Home Evening” and adopted it in my family…My family consisted of my wife and I and four children. We “tweaked” it a bit so that it became a time to share things and encourage one another.

I admire the participation of Catholics, Episcopalians and Mormons in our local Interfaith Council.

I admire the dedication of our Muslim friends.

So we can all learn some things from each other!

I had a touch of ODA once… I was prescribed Eucharist once a week, and it cleared up fast. 😉

Yes. I see this as individual Christians, however. I don’t see this as a “denomination” teaching something from above, that the Catholic Church has not already professed.

It’s also true that a wise man can learn much from a fool.

“Iron sharpens iron” which is Christians building up one another. Denominations have common ground, and also divisions.

(This question was, incidentally, inspired by the I’ve always wanted to ask… thread, where Protestants and others discuss why they choose to participate on a Catholic forum.)
I admit that I am attracted to different things that some Christian denominations have or do more/better than others.

A few examples:
I very much liked and was attracted to the reverence and awesomeness of God that I felt when I visited a Catholic Mass. I am also attracted to the rich history, tradition, and other aspects of the faith.

I have always appreciated how Baptists emphasize Bible learning and memorizing scripture, the books of the Bible, etc. especially during the childhood years.

I admire how hospitality and making others feel welcome is done so well in certain denominations and churches compared to others.

I admire the zeal to witness that some denominations tend to have. I tend to be a little more reserved in that regard but am attracted by the ease it is done in some Christian circles.

I like the traditional hymns sung in some Christian denominations. I also like some of the modern praise songs sung in others.

:amen: Once I received the Eucharist the first time at the Easter Vigil I knew nothing but the Catholic Church would do for me.

Once someone has found the Truth of Jesus Christ and His Church, the Catholic Church then…John 6:67-70
After this many of his disciples went back; and walked no more with him. Then Jesus said to the twelve: Will you also go away? And Simon Peter answered him: Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we have believed and have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of God.

I did for a number of years. But I’m now in that denomination ;).

It’s too late, of course, but I see now the the poll really should have a “I’m now exclusively SDA, but I used to have ODA” option.

Yes big time. And for most of my life, I’ve had the attraction. At the moment I suppose the UCC and TEC especially draw my attention. I’m attracted to faiths that are more open and that have less in a closed box. Because I struggle breathing if I’m expected to fit into a box with the lid closed. And thus I find my ODA is to those which are open to growing and evolving in the finite human experience and understanding of an infinite God. And open communion is big to me. Over time, I’ve also looked at the Disciples of Christ Church, PCUSA, ELCA and others. Unitarian Universalists have even been somewhat of an attraction to me. But I may be too much of a Christian for their faith community to be a best fit for me.

Yeah, there’s a little bit of curiosity, I suppose. Even though I am a sufi, I go to a salafi mosque and one of my favorite sheikhs is a salafi. I don’t think Salafism is consistent, but we have more in common than differences.

Not other denominations but yes to one other faith. It’s strange because I have no attraction to Unitarianism but am attracted by Islam. I think as one other poster put it because of a love of foreign exotica and a dislike of certain styles/strains of Christianity (ie.Republican Party/George Bush ‘axis of evil’ evangelical Protestant/Megachurch etc). I am attracted by the simplicity of Islam, of Oneness, worshipping the one Spirit, no dogma. However I believe the reality is different and although their is much to be said for simplicity, as CS Lewis said do we really expect the truth to be simple. And I can’t accept, based on even a deductive understanding of the info we have on Jesus that he was just one in the line of Prophets. So I stick with my Catholic faith.

The Mormon Church. I have never seen a more close-knit group of people and stronger fellowship. They always have SOMETHING going on in church to be involved and frankly, I find their Ward congregations so immensely welcoming. I have been close friends with several Mormon ladies for several years now. Without any commitment of my own toward their Church, they have brought my family dinners when I was in the hospital, have offered to help out with kids, and have never pressured me into joining their Church.

I admire a number of other denominations: Anabaptists, for their fidelity to the Gospel, very strict Protestants (Puritans), for sticking to traditions and moral values firmly. The denominations which use only the KJV- this is a practice which I admire greatly (although I’d be happy with the DR or Vulgate too).
To the Mennonite lifestyle, yes. But I can practice much of that as a faithful Catholic.

Yes, Im attracted to Catholicism and Mormonism and hope to join one of them.

I like the worship songs of pentecostals/evangelicals/baptists etc but Im not attracted to their denominations
