I went to confession before Mass last Sunday and communion during Mass last Sunday. Unexpectedly my mother has offered to have my children over for the afternoon today. I am going to use some of that time to go to Eucharistic adoration for at least 30 minutes. Can I receive a plenary indulgence? Or did I need to have had a plenary indulgence in mind when I went to confession and communion?

No, you’re fine. The grant requires that we perform the exercise of our choice within 20 days prior to our confession/communion, or 20 days afterward. We need to have the intention of gaining the indulgence when we perform the indulgenced act, and in addition, offer prayers for the intention of the Holy Father. I usuallly do this when I have finished whatever I am doing to obtain it under the grant. For each plenary, it is not required to go again to confession during those 20 days, but it is required to go to communion on each day that we intend to gain another plenary within that time frame. We may only gain one per day.

Please be reminded that i am in RCIA so this may be a ridiculous question.
what are the intents of the Holy Father (do you list them) or do you just pray “for the intent of the Holy Father”?

Dee, there is no silly question. 🙂

Sometimes you’ll see mass schedules “for the intention of the celebrant.” Or some will perhaps come to CAF with a prayer intention but not name it. It’s kinda like that … we don’t know the Pope’s intentions, but we offer prayer for his intentions, whatever they may be on any given day.

For anyone following this thread, here is the information about the 20 days before or after, as posted on EWTN.

EWTN always publishes the Pope’s prayer intentions on their website.

Thank you for the clarifications!

It is my understanding that a general intention to receive all the indulgences for which one qualifies that day is sufficient. One does not need to know the details of a specific indulgence.
