Do you honor your ancestors?

The OP may have meant to refer to Asian practices of ancestor worship. But she asked us if WE honor our ancestors.

We are responding, each of us in our own way, from a variety of cultures. I do honor my ancestors – through praying for them, and thanking God for them, and asking for their prayers. This is a very Catholic way of honoring the gifts God has given us.
 
No I don’t. I’m not sure they were living their lives thinking about me in 2018, so why should I spend my time dwelling on them? I don’t even do ancestry.com or anything.

Could it not also be the younger generation that may be guilty of misunderstanding their elders?

All older people were once young and as a person travels through life their experience grows. If I knew at the age of 18 or 20, what I think I know now, I would have done things quite differently. But when I was 20 I thought I knew what was best.

By mentioning the conflict of generations, I do not mean that the Catholic teaching is not attached to the paradigm of modern youth.
Catholic teaching on family, marriage, childbirth, chastity, always right.
I mean that sometimes a society with an aged traditions of the need of radical changes. Young people feel it, but the old generation hinders them.
I am referring to post-Soviet countries, the Мiddle East, Central Asia, and many other post-colonial States, including nomadic patriarchal societies.

Hi. This is my first CAF post!

I’ve been trying to find ways to pray for my ancestors I don’t know of as of yet, because it’s so easy to forget the thousands of years of genealogy that led to your existence. While primarily praying for my most recently departed relatives, I’ve said a couple blanket prayers for my ancestors.

Also, as of this morning, I went through prayer cards of my wife’s departed relatives and started setting calendar reminders in my phone to prayer for her particular deceased relatives on their death date, as well. I’ve never done such a thing, so I’m excited to do it.

So what radical changes do you mean? Not on marriage, the family, gender ideology, abortion etc as you support Catholic teaching. It’s all well and good to talk about radical change, but what exactly would this change look like on a January afternoon for the average person?

Here in the UK we have had radical political change, but it has been oldies like me who seem to have supported it (not the young) is Britain pulling out of the European Union. And then in the USA you have had very radical change with the election of Donald Trump as your President. Radical change isn’t always the preserve of the young, us oldies can instigate radical change too and quite right too, all votes are equal regardless of the age of the voter.

Congrats on your first post! I love the idea of setting reminders on your phone for your deceased ancesters. Might have to do that idea myself! 😉
 
Oh, no. I don’t mean Trump and Brexit.
I mean for example the older generation of senile, pull Russians and Belarusians(also in Ukraine DNR LNR republics) to the Soviet totalitarian past.
Sometimes educated young people are forced to leave and flee, while others choose to fight and become martyrs.
I think the same can be said about the conflict of generations in such societies as Iran, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, states of Arabistan, North and South Africa.
Even in my country - Ukraine, millions of elder people worship an alien Church, the Church of the Empire that wants to master us territorialy, culturaly and spiritualy.
While the ideological and romantic youth volunteers in the war ready to shed blood for the freedom and independence of our sovereign state, millions of older people worship and honor of the Russian saints, obey the Patriarch of Moscow, and pulling all of society again in the same morass of authoritarianism, stagnation and the gap with the civilized world.
 
I pray for my immediate family/grandparents who have passed. I think I honor my ancestors from centuries ago in spirit by trying to adhere to their values. And my ancestors brought about many important people in my country including Presidents(my cousins 😁)who fought for liberty…so for that I honor them. I should also pray for them-both Catholic and Protestant.

But what is the civilised world? I don’t think the West represents that. The West seems to be in a revolution consisting of gender ideology, abortion on demand and an abandoning of faith.

I think that the West (Europe anyway) is sinking into a cesspit of filth and depravity and sadly with many young people in the West seeming to embrace this as some sort of progressive revolution.

The trouble though, with any revolution is that one ruling elite is replaced by another. I dread to think what the ruling elite will be like if this ‘progressive’ revolution in the West prevails.
