Im Catholic, but to me this is a question we should be considering more then anything else on this forum.

The Main Point of our faith should be How can I know Jesus more and If I really know him…or just know about him.

Have you made your faith just about learning dogmas and doctrines, councils and papal statements, have you made your faith just about historical critical methods? My point is it seems so many of us on this board our so consumed with these things along with apologetic arguments. I dont see the Love of Jesus on this forum.

I admit, My relationship has been shaky at best with Jesus because of my own doing of course.

I think this forum needs to take a page from our Protestant Brethen and get to focusing on knowing Christ, this is the most important question of our life.

Jesus said Depart from me I never knew you…

I can see it now but Lord I know all the Papal Statements of your Popes in and out? But Lord , I knew every rebuttal to protestants there was? But Lord , I studied and learn the Historical Critical method to the bone? But Lord didnt I start an apologetics website?

He will say the above Words to some …Depart from me I never knew you. The time you should of spent getting to know me, you spent on learning some silly methods.

My point is we need to Know Jesus , only when we return to this will we be able to act in love and true power.

We will then raise up men like Peter, and Paul in america.

We need to return to Know Jesus , not just things about Jesus.

Amen!

If there’s anything I’m taking with me from my Protestant upbringing, its the importance of knowing and having a relationship with God. Not that Catholics don’t have that, they definitely do! Its just not as talked about.

Catholics sure are private about their personal spiritual lives! Took me forever just to get my boyfriend to finally pray with me outside of meals.

RoP-

To be fair, this is an apologetics forum. Defending the doctrines of the faith is what its all about here.

The ideas you expressed are fair enough, but they do not necessarily pertain to apologetics, so perhaps you’ve gotten a skewed view.

Apologetics is not all we do, but it’s all we do here.

Hope this helps. :tiphat:

Much of this forum deals with apologetics. That being said, of course much is going to be brought up concerning ECF, early Popes, church teaching etc. But lets not forget pre-supposing all of this is the Eucharist. Christ Himself. I would submit that the Catholic faithful know Him the best and in the most intimate maner. “…unless you eat of my flesh and drink of my blood there is no life in you.”

I receive Jesus in the Eucharist - He allows me to take Him into my body and become one with me - it doesn’t get any more personal and intimate that that! 😃

But you are right - there are many Catholics (and many people in general) who do not realize that the point should be about falling more and more in love with Jesus, not following rules. That having been said - the more in love with Jesus and His Church you are - the more natural those “rules” become until they are a very part of who you are!

Repentor, Great Point.

And yes, I think our search into the things you pointed out are an attempt to get to know Jesus. If you fall in love with a woman, don’t you wish to know all about her family? Aren’t you interested in her childhood? What she likes and dislikes?

The thing is, if someone thinks they truly come to know Jesus, I think they’re only fooling themselves, for we will only truly get to know Him when we are faced with the Beatific Vision in Heaven.

God Bless!!!

Rules?!? What stinkin’ rules?!?

They are just a part of doing the will of the Father!!! What child doesn’t want to please his Father?

I agree but this is a topic for the spirituality forum because the question is individual and relates primarily to the spiritual journey and growth of the individual, and only tangentially to the universal doctrine of the Church, which is the proper territory of apologetics. Apologetics explains the doctrine, which is all about Jesus. Spirituality is the relationship with Jesus. A relationship is built on more than reading a person’s biography, hearing his teachings and talking to his friends.

You bring up a scary part of the Bible, when Jesus says to
certain people: depart from me, I never knew you. It is
baffling how Jesus could say this to people who performed
miracles and cast out spirits in His name. How could He not
know them if He gave them this kind of power? You are right
in this feeling that there is nothing a person can do to insure
heaven for themselves. However, don’t be too quick to judge the
love of those who study the Catholic faith and memorize things.
Would you show up at a birthday party without a gift and then
criticize all those who brought a gift? Each one must do the
best he can in their relationship with Jesus, and it won’t improve
things between you and Jesus by criticizing others. Have no
fear, He loves you, you are a masterpiece. Stay with Him, and
He will give you a perfect love. Have patience with yourself, and
others. All things will come to you in God’s time.
