Do you know what wine your parish uses?

Sophie111:
Most Church wine is fortified to 20% alcohol.
That’s simply not true.

Before the use of sulfates in wine as a preservative, brandy was often added to the wine to increase the overall alcohol percentage, but that’s definitely not true today.
Its true in my country, maybe not yours.
Where are you dwelling?

My parish use to buy wine from “Christian Brothers,” who specialize in altar wine.

Since our new administrator arrived, we now have a wine which I guess is from south of the border, as he prefers.

However, the wine taste too sweet and weak.

LOL - I’m not sure what its made from but it sure is nasty
I certainly agree, but the product did have its fans at least back in the 80’s when I sold it. Lots of repeat business. Not our best seller, the best seller was Thunderbird wine.

I didn’t realize port was permitted, as it is fortified.
As I understand it, fortified wines are permitted as long as they don’t exceed a certain alcohol content (I’m not sure what it is) and they are fortified with alcohol made from grapes.

At least that is what I was told, though I am far from knowledgeable on such matters.

I prefer white wine over red as it is so much easier to clean.
Isn’t that against the rules? I’ve only ever seen red wine used at Mass.
That happened to be what the priest preferred. I’ve seen white, red, and rosé wine used over the years. There is no requirement that it be red.

It does have to be actual grape wine. Wine made from other fruits isn’t allowed, neither is a grape drink mixed with grain- it has to be legitimate wine, fermented grapes

Yes, of course it has to be grape wine. But it can be any colour as the pp said. Our parish has used a white wine for twenty years at least.

Down Under must be the port capital then re Church wine.

Our Parish uses wine from a local vineyard. It has the seal of Ecclesiastical Authority approval to use for the celebration of Mass. It is a nice sweet red wine, similar to sherry.

We live in an area that produces a great deal of wine so wineries often donate to the Church. At one time my family did the same; I would just give several cases at a time. It happened to be a white wine, which is preferred at our parish, pinot grigio in this case. We no longer produce the wine however.

My father owned a business where he would hire men from what was called the alcoholics home back in those days. Nowadays I think those people mostly live on the street. He helped them stay straight and build a career with him, get their own homes and so on…Sometimes some of them would run into trouble. Well, actually there was always someone struggling with their addiction. Richards Wild Irish Rose was a favorite among them. I think it was partly because it was cheap and partly because of the conveniently small size of the bottle.

You are so lucky your bottles even have a seal on them.
Nothing like breaking a seal to make the contents seem even more “fair dinkum”.
