The other day I was thinking about St. Patrick’s Day and my own Irish heritage when I was struck with the sudden realization that I didn’t know the patron Saint for my own country (USA)! How embarrassing!

So now I only know because I looked it up last week…

I tried to look up Canada’s patron Saint, but I came up with at least 5 different answers. Can any Canadians set the record straight?

So the question is, before you read this thread, did you know who your nation’s patron Saint is?

I’m answering “no”.

Yes, its Mary for the U.S…😃 and I named my 22 month old in her honor…Addisyn Mary…

St George is England’s - he was probably from Turkey originally, so I understand.

Many English clergy, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, suggest it should probably be St Alban - the first known English martyr - I think I agree.

I think for Canada it’s St. Anne, mother of Our Lady. But I’m not sure about that.

That was one of the five that I encountered, along with St. Joachim, St. Joseph, St John the Baptist, and Saint Jean de Brébeuf.

Wasn’t Edward the Confessor the previous patron Saint?

Sorry! I don’t know why I said St Alban - you are right, they want Edward the Confessor back! I’m happy to admit I was totally wrong!

Mother Mary, Patron of India
Frances Xavier
Rose of Lima
Thomas, the Apostle

Personally I like St Thomas the Apostle who made it to India in AD 52 long before Sindbad the Sailor was probably even thought of. “Doubting” Thomas made it clear all the way to India along the old spice routes and established the church in South India.

The Santhome Cathedral Basilica in Chennai (Madras), India is built over his tomb.

At the time of the Norman Conquest, it was St. Dunstan of Canterbury (Cantwaraburh). The huscarles shouted his name in defiance.

Blessed Virgin Mary first of all
St. Adalbert (Wojciech)
St. Stanislaus (Stanisław)
St. Hedvigis (Jadwiga) - not officially patron, I think
St. Andrew (Andrzej) Bobola

It is possible for a nation to have more than one patron saint :yup:

France, for example, has St Denis as well as St Joan of Arc and I think St Louis IX as well.

We in Australia have Our Lady Help of Christians, St Francis Xavier, St Therese of Lisieux, and of course our home-grown Blessed Mary MacKillop (may she be sainted soon!)

Oooo… so many “new” (to me) Saints I get to look up now ! 🙂

Our Lady, the Immaculate Conception

Our Lady of Guadalupe (Patroness of the Americas- not just the patron saint of the Mexicans, which Pat Buchanan incorrectly stated)

Well, For my home country Germany it’s Saint Boniface whose feast day is Jun2nd or 4th, I’m not sure.
For the United States it is Our Blessed Mother Mary.
Thanks for the poll.
🙂

The Philippines’ Patron Saint is also Our Lady under her titles of:

The Immaculate Conception (The Principal Patroness)

Our Lady of Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe was also declared Patroness of the Philippines by Pope Pius XI in 1935; She was thus Patroness of the Americas and of the Philippine Islands)

Japan’s Patron is:
St. Francis Xavier
St. Pedro Bautista
