Do you like holding hands during the Our Father at Mass?

I personally don’t do it and don’t feel the need to do it to feel one with God and with the congregation, but neither do most parishiones in my parish. But I don’t really care if I see other people doing it. It’s not like they’re hurting anyone or causing a scandal. I just don’t like doing it myself. The only time it’s a little disturbing is when you see a couple getting a little too amorous with the hand-holding, like the man’s hand eventually making it’s way down the woman’s back, among other things etc. And yes, I’ve seen it happen having stood in the choir loft behind everyone else for a few years.

Can’t we all just stop whining and get along! :crying:

These threads make me - .

Having been all over the Protestant world and having seen this type of situation there over and over and over again, here’s what we would have done … we would just split the church over the issue and the hand holders would have their own church (Charismatic) and the uptight ones would have their own church (think Bob Jones 😉 ).

In the Catholic Church, we’re just all stuck with each other.

Christ hung naked on a cross for us and we are too uncharitable to hold someone’s hand, it makes me sick that this is beat to death like it is.

I’ll bet the persecuted Christians in the third world countries aren’t arguing over such silly things. We should be more thankful and much more charitable when we are blessed to be worshipping together with our only fear being a germ now and again. 😊
Whineing and sniveling are a very important part of our duties as American citizens!😉

I agree that holding or not holding is not earth shaking and we should be discussing more important matters!!!

Do you prefer instant oatmeal or old fashioned??🤷

Holding hands during the Our Father seems inappropriate in that we are praying to God the Father at that moment and our attention should be directed to Him, not each other. Holding hands signifies a horizontal direction, a kind-of let’s come together and acknowledge each other - type of gesture. But here we are petitioning God and our attention should be on the Altar where He is present through His Son in the Eucharist. The Sign of Peace follows, that is the more appropriate time for hand holding. 👍

Holding hands during the Our Father interrupts the flow of the Sacred Liturgy and attempts to supplant the purpose of the “sign of peace”.

During the Our Father, we are praying to the Father. A sign of communion like this is inappropriate. Only the church has authority over the liturgy, and it has strongly discouraged this practice.

Please provide reference to where the Church has strongly discouraged holding hands during the Our Father.

Please, not EWTN.

Jim, Try www.vatican.va under the congregation for liturgy and the sacraments. I beleive Cardinal Arinze addressed certain liturgical practices that were not in keeping with the GIRM and touched on the practice of holding hands at the Pater Noster. I know the USCCB has aslo disouraged it, though not officially in their deliberations in the fall 2006 or spring 2207 conference when discussing the liturgy.

For a topic that has been done to death, it sure has generated a lot of responses! 😉 There are lots of great emoticons, too. All the hugging and hand-holding smiley faces warms the heart! 😃

If you could find something specific, that would help. In the recent CDWDS document Redemtionis Sacramentum, which specifically addressed matters to be observed or avoided during Mass, there is not one mention of what to do during the “Our Father”. That would seem to indicate that it doesn’t rank high on the Vatican’s list of priorities concerning liturgical rubrics.

I’m certainly not a fan of the hand holding, but I don’t think there’s anything official that speaks to it at all. All I’ve ever come across is second-hand sources saying it is “discouraged”. I’ve never seen a primary source. Perhaps there is some explanation applying general principles to this specific situation? 🤷

If you know that the USCCB has discouraged it, you should surely be able to bring up the document where they make a statement against it.

I have never seen it, and being I’m not the one who made the statement, I don’t feel its my responsibility to go looking for something that probably doesn’t exist.

I thought we were supposed to have so many kids that our family filled a pew. Then you only have to hold hands with family members. That’s what I did.

And oh, yeah - old fashioned oatmeal.
