Do you like the NABRE; why/ why not

As a candidate for full communion, I’ve received two copies of the NABRE. The huge red/orange one and the Fireside. In all honesty, I’m a fan of it but also find the DR quite appealing.

How does one utilize the DR and traditional prayers while in the midst of Novus Ordo? Don’t get me wrong. I love Novus Ordo and it’s beautiful, but I do feel there is some lacking but I’m Charismatic and still enjoy listening to CCM and Southern Gospel. Go figure. :confused:

You can read the Sunday readings in the D-R before going to Mass on Sunday and also use it for the daily readings.

That would make sense. Thanks!

Believe it or not, the more I read/use NABRE I feel comfortable just sticking with it.

Believe it or not, one can stick to the ‘novous ordo’ and still be ‘traditional’ in there thinking/ practice. The ‘Novus Ordo’ (proper name is Ordinary Form) was supposed to turn out to be similar to the Traditional Mass. For example:

I’d give anything to be able to have this regularly

That just looks like a Tridentine Mass to me.

I’m used to the Priest facing towards the congregation. It’s also easier for me to read lips, being partially deaf and all. 🤷

I agree, I use many different translations, but the one I use the most is the NABRE. For my daily readings I will read each reading in two or three different translations, and have doing this for years. But I keep coming back to the NABRE as my main translation (though the RSV-2CE is a close second). I have recently received the Knox Bible and am also enjoying it.

As someone who is coming back to Catholicism from Protestantism, I agree with you 100%. I am familiar with the Cambridge Press/Pitt-Minion Bibles and they are made to last more than a generation.

I’ve looked for such a Bible for over two months-- no dice. In fact, I’ve found that nearly all the publishers/sellers of Catholic Bibles do not know the difference between Genuine Leather and Bonded Leather.

Sadly, the publishers of Catholic Bibles don’t produce the quality that publishers of Protestant Bibles do.

Alas, I’ve had to give up my NKJV for Catholic translations.
 
Me too! I still have a few favorite KJV bibles in calfskin, etc. that I use. I just keep my NAB or DR handy too, so I have the deuterocanonicals. 😉

Regarding an earlier post, there’s nothing wrong with contemporary christian music or gospel when you’re a Catholic! Remember, we’re not “either- or” we’re “both- and.”

I love listening to Pange Lingua and other traditional chants. But I also appreciate current christian music. Just be aware, even in song, you sometimes will get a few teachings that are contrary to the truth. But that’s rare. Most of the contemporary stuff I hear is focused on God’s love and the joy of being forgiven- no conflicts there!

Thanks. It’s just that I’m coming from Mormonism (after an upbringing of Pentecostalism) and in the Mormon Church we were told that if there’s too much doctrinal conflicts (which there were because of the Trinity and personage of God) then to avoid it. But I couldn’t seem to let go of my upbringing.

The Bishops voted to revise the New Grail Psalms. Does anyone know why? I thought that the New Grail Psalms was what would eventually be used in the Liturgy.

The only thing I have read was the reason was something about “sprung rhythm”. How would that make the Psalms less accurate?

I thought that the people who came up with the New Grail Psalms specifically tried to make them singable. So I guess my question is do the Bishops think that theNew Grail Psalms aren’t singable or do they think that because of their singability that they are less accurate?

I ask these questions because previously the Bishops approved the New Grail Psalms instead of the Psalms in the NABRE.

From what I remember they want to revise them to make them “easier for proclamation” or something like that. Eventually when they revise the NABRE again ( to make it suitable for liturgy), the Psalms are going to be replaced with the revised Grail Psalms in our Bible too. I can’t wait for that :extrahappy: will finally have one Bible translation for Liturgy, study and devotion!

I personally like the revised Psalms in the NABRE a little better than the Revised Grail Psalms. A while back, Timothy at Catholicbiblesblog.com did a side by side comparison of 10 or 11? of the (then new) NABRE Psalms and the Revised Grail Psalms. I think I chose 6 out of 10 or 11 times for the NABRE, it was close. When the Bishops chose the Revised Grail Psalms, I don’t remember if the NABRE Psalms were even completed at that time? I think the Grail Psalms were also written so they could be sung easily (which matters little to me).

Yes, the Revised Grail Psalms are for chanting. They revised them because the original Grail Psalms often paraphrased some parts for the sake of chanting; the revision corrects that. Its hard to choose between the NABRE Psalms and the Revised Grail Psalms, they are both excellent! Either way, its going to be wonderful that will finally have one Bible translation!

Don’t worry you will have plenty of time to break that new Bible in. If this project is completed within the next 10 years, I will be surprised! 😉

2025 is what I have been told. All depends on how quickly things are approved by Rome.
