Do you like to use a missal/ette? And does your parish have them?

I bought a missal earlier in the year after the changes last Advent. I had never used one before, but now I’ve gotten to the point where I have to have it all the time. I use it during Mass for the readings and the psalm, as well as the Creed which I haven’t memorized yet. I chose the one I did because it has tons of prayers and devotions in the back as well as an examination of conscience. Buying that missal was definitely money well spent.

At my parish, the Gather hymnals have the readings for each week in the back. Before each Sunday Mass, the cantor announces which page the readings are on for those who want to follow along.

This is what I use my personal missal for. If I haven’t had time and don’t have it with me for some reason, it is nice to have one in the pew to at least glance at the readings before Mass starts.

I still need an aid of some kind for the creed. I’m OK with the gloria as long as we are singing the usual setting. If we speak it, or sing something else, I need to follow on still.
 
Option 4 for me, about the only time I really need a cheat sheet is during the Creed and i’ve just about got it memorized, but I do have the Breaking Book handy during the Creed in the I stumble.
 
I never use one except if a hymn that I don’t know is in it. I read all the readings ahead of time and meditate on them so even if the reader is not good Iknow the readings. The way I see it,would you go to a playa dread along? Do youread along a movie script? We should know the words of theMass, even now that the revised texts are a year old. I think too many people depend on them when they really don’t need them.

The priest/deacon in the person of Christ proclaims the Word to the assembled faithful.

(…and they read along in their little books - kinda spoils the scene;))

However, with distraction (or distractibility), or hearing issues, or learning differences/different learning preferences a missal may be helpful.

However, I would suggest that sitting closer to the altar would help too, but if that doesn’t work and hearing the Word Proclaimed is a problem then a missal may be appropriate.

Personally I use a missal to pre-read the readings and Gospel.

Yes it is important to pre-read and study mass readings, and only the priest should proclaim the gospel, but reading along is quite appropriate as the faithful are called to participate and not just observe the Mass.

that is not what is meant by participation.
