I think ultimately you should talk to your priest or spiritual director, if you have one, but it certainly sounds like a justifiable reason. The birth of my baby cost over $12,000 dollars, and that is a lot of money. Fortunately, my husband’s insurance covered all but $800 or so. If we had to pay that all, I don’t know what we would have done. The very fact that you want to have children now, tell me that you are just being responsible, which is what the Pope tells us to be, responsible parents.My husband and I use NFP, but we abstain during fertile periods because I don’t have health insurance and when we do get pregnant we want to make sure we can provide proper health care for me and the baby.
My question: is this a justifiable excuse for abstaining during fertile periods? It isn’t that we are opposed to pregnancy (quite the opposite, really… we are so crazy-anxious to have kids!), it’s just that we want to be able to provide for the baby. I don’t want to do something that is against what the church teaches…
