I prefer a smaller one. I went to a Coptic Orthodox parish once and I liked how it was a very familial sort of place. Also, I like the intimate feel of worship that smaller places provide. It matches my personality type better – I’m someone who just would want to be with a few close friends rather than a lot of people. And, it’s nice being closer to the altar area. I would imagine it could be harder for me to appreciate the Eucharist if I am too far from it as it is Consecrated. Lastly, smaller parishes mean less people, which would mean less disturbance and distraction. There would be less chance of someone’s phone going off (it isn’t so much ringing phones that bother me, but it’s annoying when they just let it ring and ring and don’t remedy it straight away).
There are, of course, benefits of having a bigger parish too. They tend to be grander-looking while smaller ones could feel as if they don’t recognise the solemnity of the event.
What do you prefer, and why?
