Do You Prefer Whole Wheat Hosts or White Hosts?

Since all hosts must contain wheat, but the amount depends of the maker, I personally prefer the taste of whole wheat.

Oh? Do you have a reference? Whole wheat flour is routinely used to make prosphora in my Ruthenian parish.

I’ll never forget a liturgy I was at years ago where Bishop George I
Kuzma refused to use a prosphora that was whole wheat…he debt a letter out right after forbidding it add being against the tradition.

A long time ago, I inadvertently aspirated a bit of the Precious Blood. Never happened before or since. I coughed and choked and made quite a spectacle of myself. I have been a bit wary since then.

the little white hosts melt immediately in your mouth. The whole wheat ones don’t so much, and crackle into bits if you break them in your mouth. I’m for anything that provides the least hazard of aspiration or inadvertently having some hard little bit stick between teeth.

I’d say whole wheat. It’s more like the kind of wheat bread that the early church would have used. To my knowledge, white flour is an industrial product where the wheat germ and bran are removed.

When the wheat germ and bran are removed, there is a possibility of the oils going rancid. That’s something that would have faced the early Christians, and I think we should use materials that are as close as possible to what they would have used.

I am pretty sure 99.999% of Catholics couldn’t care less and never before bothered to think about the difference.

Tell that to all the kids who buy those at the local corner store as a snack. Not kidding, around where I grew up altar breads are sold as a snack.

Actually, Canon Law requires hosts of “only wheat”…

And as for Prosphora, Wheat, Leaven (yeast), Salt.

(Water is presumed in all.)

I’ve seen whole wheat flour used by the local Russian Orthodox, too…

So there is no official rule? Kuzma was free to create such a rule when he was the bishop of the eparchy (I suppose) specifically for his eparchy, but not only is it no longer in effect (Phoenix has no such rule) he never had the authority to place such a rule on ALL Byzantine Catholics. Not by a long shot.

As a kid did you ever make flour paste for craft projects? Pretty much the same thing. That’s why the whole wheat tastes better.
