Do you receive communion on the tongue or by hand?

By hand. I get a little nervous taking by tongue. don’t know why.
 
On the tongue. I have yet to see any understandable rationale for reintroducing communion in the hand.
 
I like both options. But I almost always take on the tongue. To me, its more traditional. Though I do take it in the hand on occasion. (for instance if I was rushed and didnt have to brush my teeth that morning.) :o
 
I used to always receive in the hand, then the first time I took my son to Mass with me a few months ago, I was holding him and had no choice but to receive on the tongue. I was nervous about it, but it felt more “right” to me to do it that way and I’ve received on the tongue ever since then, holding DS or no.

(It has confused EMHCs sometimes when I’m not holding DS, I don’t think they’re used to such young people receiving on the tongue - most of the other people in my parish who do are much older. I can have my hands down in front of me, in no way reaching up, and a few EMHCs will try and put it in my hand, even if my mouth is wide open. :rolleyes: Luckily it only takes a few seconds and they figure it out. Also lucky that they’re doing a retraining/training for new EMHCs in a few weeks. 👍)
 
I think it’s disrespectful to receive in the hand. It can crumble, be dropped, and also be stolen. I almost dropped a host once, never again. I ONLY receive on the tongue and 90% of our members do the same and about a dozen will kneel as well.
 
I prefer to receive the Body of Christ on the tongue (for mainly aesthetic reasons, I admit).

Please, please, remember that Jesus only asked us to receive Him in the Holy Eucharist. He did NOT specifiy posture. One way is not “better” than another.

I can only guess that it makes Him so sad to see His children having arguments and or trying to one up each other about who is most holy because of how they receive.

LOL, I have to agree with you.

I have received both ways, I prefer the hand because I have a really big personal space bubble, and I don’t like people getting near my face.

I have received on the tongue only when my arm was in a cast, and couldn’t handle the host with any certainty.

Both ways are acceptable in my eyes.

I think this thread is more personal preference than any “get it on the tongue or you’re stupid” type of arguement. 🤷

I am ok with both options . I am pretty sure pre vatican II was all by mouth (correct me if I am wrong) I visit the sick and bring communion to them and I get nervous when the sick stick their tongues out to receive . I dont want an accidental touch of the tongue with my fingers .I take it by the hands for the most part . If I am at Latin mass I take it by mouth .
 
Either way is fine with me, but at my regular church, the priest prefers that receive it by hand, and I can see why because we receive it standing and there are the EMs giving it too. However when I attend the church near my work, it is a Dominican church and everyone kneels at the communion rail and receives it by tongue. In this case the Priest is assisted by the altar boy with the paten, so the host cannnot fall.

By the way, this article says you are not supposed to say “amen” when receiving by tongue:

“Open your mouth wide enough and stick out your tongue far enough to easily receive the Sacrament (once received, don’t respond “Amen” as is done in the Novus Ordo Rite). Many priests recommend closing your eyes when receiving so that you’re not tempted to follow his hand; it’s best to not move at all. And, of course, don’t close your mouth until the Host is safely on your tongue and the priest’s hand is out of the way! Make the Sign of the Cross after receiving Communion, then return to your pew and kneel in thanksgiving (many people cover their faces with their hands or veils at this time to increase a sense of intimacy).” FROM:

When I reverted, I took it on the tongue, because I had issues about the Real Presence. Those days are over and I receive in the hand. I also don’t want to appear ‘holier than thou’.

Okay, and there’s this great-looking EMHC at our parish and it helps me to keep my mind on the matter at hand if I don’t look at her married face!😉

I’ve always said “Amen” before receiving, whether in the hand or on the tongue (seems like the priest or EMHC waits for the “Amen” first anyhow). So this is confusing to me. 🤷 I do make the Sign of the Cross afterwards (stepping sideways, and facing the altar, before turning to go back to my seat, but I had not heard that this was “required” in any way.)
