Do you seek approval from your spouse before buying something over a certain $ amount?

***I normally do, but my husband is working tonight, and I saw a pilates machine I have had my eye on for some time:o, and it’s debuting tonight on QVC. (again) My dh has known for a while that I’d like to get a pilates machine and he said he’d like to use it also; I like pilates, and have been wanting this machine for a while–a coworker of uses it, and just loves it.

So, should I wait to talk it over again with dh before buying it? It got me thinking to ask the question on here…do you talk over purchases that are say over a certain $ amount with your spouse before purchasing? I just don’t want to miss out on this deal.:bluelite: (they dropped the shipping and handling!) lol

I have also shopped around, and this looks to be a quality machine, at a good price…hard to find.

Ok, I’m trying to sell you, sorry. :o***

🤷

Well…I don’t know, just talked to dh…he called from work, and I told him…and he said that could be my anniversary present, coming early. Hmmm…

But, he doesn’t like when I pick out presents, and we call it my birthday or anniversary gift. He likes to do the picking, so I don’t know. What was he trying to say…I asked…what does that mean, exactly? He said…it means that ‘could’ be your anniversary present coming early.

Can someone translate this from male-ese to lay terms? Please? :o***

I do 95% of the time cause he mostly handles the finances. I hate dealing with money it stresses me out. I mean I know how much we have in the bank and our goals but he makes everything balance and pays bills. Really it would boil down to how much it was, I’m really really cheep too though. Although if I knew we had plenty of money and some sort of holiday was coming around (Mothers day?) I’d might just ell him I took care of my present already, specially if it was something I’d been wanting a while and he knew it.

Doh posted to slow 🙂

Sounds to me like he might get you something else anyway cause he likes getting you things??? Best I can come up with 😉

***Hey there…maybe you like my husband’s idea that I post above? lol:o The money’s in the bank, I mean…do I absolutely NEED THIS, no. I don’t need it. But, I want something that I can do resistance training, and cardio, and some yoga type moves, all in one shot. I’m not doing enough I feel…I only have time for cardio on most days and this would really help. (I’m playing back my conversation with dh just now:D) He said…with a laugh…happy anniverary, honey. I mean, if he is saying that it’s too expensive to buy AND buy ananniversary gift, just come out and say it, you know?

Men-glish. lol***

***I told him we will discuss tomorrow, over breakfast. He didn’t seem opposed to it, but I want to be in sync…he is a very reasonable and logical thinker (unfortunately for me sometimes:p)

I used to never run anything by him, when it came to purchases, and it would make him feel like we weren’t “one flesh”…I really try to take into consideration his thoughts…I actually handle the finances…which would be a job I’d gladly turn over, because he would be much better at it…but I’m afraid then he would never buy anything fun. lol

I just realized, I should have placed this thread in the finance section, I’m sorry mods…please move it, if you feel it’s necessary. ***

Whenever I want to purchase something more expensive, or large scale, my husband always says “happy birthday/anniversary”…that means if I want it, go ahead and get it…he still buys me something separate for my b-day/anniversary anyway! 👍

Sometimes, saving up for something really big … a really big thing … like a house … might be more … worthwhile and satisfying … compared with a large number of small purchases.

😉

***so, what’s your point? 😃 We are saving for a down payment on a home…this pilates machine won’t thwart those efforts. Do you know my husband. lol

I think our husbands sound alike. :o ***

Typically I think we read WAY more in to what they say than what they mean 🙂 Men are simple creatures 🙂 If hes okay with you getting it I’d get it … count it as your Anniversary present(or what ever gift giving event is coming up) and if you get something else your will be pleasantly surprised 🙂 I love my husband to death, he is the most amazing person on earth … but I have to beat him over the head with what I want if I really wanna get it 🙂

Will discuss any 1 item over $100.00 in advance but will not discuss spending $100 at Target for a cartload… although my cartload days are few & far between lately because we’re feeling the economy pinch.

I hope you get the pilates machine. It sounds like a good deal and excercise is wonderful for us all. Your husband will appreicate you taking good care of yourself in the long run.

Well…we discussed it, and dh and I think it will be a great thing for the whole family to use, too. Glad we talked it over. 👍

It’s nice he does cause I don’t. Perhaps I should get something small so she has something to open. Good Idea.

Me and my wife used to have a ton of such debates because I hate spending money (except on some stuff), and she loves to spend a ton.

In order to resolve it, we each agreed that we each get $160 a month to spend on whatever we want. I give her hers in cash, so she can spend it or save it without having any worries.

It works out great for us. Then there is no debates on either side and we can save up for big stuff without having to remind the other that we didn’t spend anything last month.

I’m saving up for snow tires:) Be nice to be able to go faster in the snow:)

My situation is different…my husband and I have been married for almost 25 years, he has been gone on business a lot of our marriage…even now, he is away…I feel that he has been generous with me over the years as a kind of “thank you” for taking care of the home/finances/kids/etc., maybe he even does it out of guilt, a little. But with all the gifts he gives me, all the surprises, all the vacations, etc., I would rather have him home, sharing everyday life and everyday things…holding my hand at mass on Sunday…

The years have gone by so quickly and he’s missed out on so much…so sometimes, time together means so much more than trinkets, and such…your wife is very lucky to wake up next to you every morning and have you home for dinner each evening…***

***It cracks me up what men save up for…lol 😃 I know tires are important, my husband was proud of me…I went and had two new tires put on a few weeks ago, I don’t know what happened, this is a relatively new car, but the front tires were really wearing! 😊 Anyways, he was so happy I did that without him having to do it, we went out and celebrated with a nice dinner. lol Hey, I’ll get the tires done all the time, if I knew that would make him so happy…😛

I like the idea of…here is ‘x’ dollars, and that’s it, let’s stick to this, etc…great idea! I am like your wife, I have always leaned on the side of spending, my husband is the saver. I have come over to his way of thinking, a) I’ve matured:D and b) the economy and c) I just like the feeling having money in the bank gives to us…spending with no limits is just stupid. 😊 Thanks for your thoughts here…!***

Seeing as we are still in the “broke college kid” category, pretty much anything over $100 has to be discussed. It’s fairly easy as I neurotically balance the checkbook every couple of days (daily if we do a lot of spending) and pay the bills usually ahead of time. We have a couple (who are both good friends and loving mentors) that put aside some money for each other’s “discretionary” funds each pay period. DH and I love this idea and cannot wait until the day we can afford this practice… 😛 While I’ve never been much of a spender (way too much internal guilt), I’ve also never been much of a saver so any sort of unexpected bill put me into (what added up to) a good deal of debt. Thankfully DH is a saver! He’s like squirrel with his acorns. Haha! So there might be some hope of an “emergency fund” one day (it’s currently a work in progress, but here’s praying we don’t lose our jobs anytime soon…)

My husband and I have been married for 30 yrs. now. We don’t really seek approval from each other on spending. We just do whatever we want and ‘inform’ each other.

Like just now, he called me up and let me know he bought a ticket to the NCAA championship game tonight for $400. Go Spartans!!
