At the Easter vigil mass I attended, a drum set was played during the liturgical music. I was told it was only for that night. I prefer liturgical music without the drums. It seems out of place to me. What do think about drums played at mass?

A drum set is an instrument.

A person playing the drums he or shes roles is to actualy keep the band playing at the right speed. if the drum slows down the music is stuffed up

The main thing is that they don’t play too loudly, and drown out the singers and musicians.

Other than that they’re musical instruments like any other.

Our Catholic high school runs a youth Mass from time to time (about three a year, I think). The drums are used with restraint, as are the electric guitars and electric keyboards. The music is of a completely religious nature and is wonderful to see and hear.

In an era where youth attendance at Mass is at disastrously low levels, here we are debating whether or not to make Mass just a little more interesting for them by incorporating music with a drum-beat.
If we don’t make Mass a little more accessible to our youth, we might as well wave them goodbye as they head to the Pentecostal church up the road, or worse, to no church at all.

From personal experience, it would appear that the youth appreciate traditional Gregorian chant and polyphony rather than profane instruments that have no place in Church where Calvary is re-enacted at Holy Mass. Traditional Mass settings attract youth in a far more substantial way than these '70s era guitar Masses.

I’m 21.

I do not like them at all, or guitars, or symbols at Mass. I can handle piano depending on how it is used. The last Mass I attended left me so distracted and uneasy I didn’t even feel comfortable enough to take communion. Needless to say, I will not attend that parish again. Both times I have been it was this way.

Agreed, and I’m 16.

It would depend on what they were playing.

Pax Christi!

Percussion is okay, when tasteful. When it adds a touch. When it does not take over.

Studies show that what young people want most at Mass is not entertainment, but good homilies: how to appreciate the Word and incorporate into daily life.

God bless.

P.S. I used to be young.

I’m not quite sure how you’d have a Mass without symbols. Now “cymbals” are another matter. 😛

Difference is, worship in OT times did not include the Holy Sacrifice of Calvary. Would Mary and John have played the guitar under the foot of the Cross on Good Friday if given the chance? Don’t think so

I didn’t vote because none of the options really fit for me.

I hesitate to say that a particular instrument is always and everywhere inappropriate at Mass. Much depends on how it is used. I’m not a huge fan of drums at Mass, but I suppose that it’s possible they could be used in an appropriate way.

I doubt they’d be playing the organ or even singing at all.

If that were the measuring stick, the only appropriate thing to do at Mass would be to weep inconsolably for the duration.

Would they have played organ? Would they have been singing? Well, since the Gospels don’t record anything that suggests that they did either, I would suggest that they would not have. Does that mean that we shouldn’t have an organ playing or any singing at Mass? Your logic is faulty.

I don’t care for percussion during Mass, but it is just as appropriate, in my opinion, as any other instrument.

I am way older than 21.

Peace

Tim

👍

I’d hate to know what some people on here would think of the parish I attend. We have an excellent choir with piano and drums…but horror of horrors…sometimes we have a sax playing!! And not just one, but two…a soprano and alto sax!

Seriously though…my parish has a very talented sax player. He plays it in such a beautiful and reverent way. As with all instruments, it all depends on how they are played. No instrument in of itself is irrevent. I love organ and Gregorian chant but I also like variety too.

Then again, I grew up in an energetic Pentecostal church so maybe I’m not the best person to ask 😛

I’ll one up ya with bongos, flutes, french horn, trumpet & whatever else shows up. The music ministry is the center of attention, physically. Expecting a kazoo any day now.

Srsly, even I will put up with a bass drum if played right. Hard to put into words, but bass guitar or bass drum should be felt, not heard.

Wow! Yep, you definitely one upped me on that one 😃 It must be nice having some of those instruments in there…I just love the sound of the French horn when it’s played well. And hey, kazoos aren’t all bad! 😛 They used to be commonplace in orchestras before Mozart’s time.

But yes, it’s all in how they are played. It’s good to have a variety of instruments but they should not be used for the wrong reasons. Organs, saxophones, French horns etc should be used for providing beautiful music in praise of Our Lord, not for an in-your-face “oooh look how cool this is” reason.

I don’t think they are appropriate. I detest them. I detest the rock concert mentality that seems to come with them. But what does it really matter what I think. I am not a priest or a Bishop.
