Does anyone think the NCR (National Catholic Reporter) exhibits any evidence of understanding of Catholic doctrines on morality and faith?

Is that the one with that heretic Joan Chittister? They should be called the “National New Age Reporter.”

I believe that they and most of their columnists represent the avant garde or the “progressives” voice in Catholicism - I except from that their John Allen column, as Allen is an ace reporter from the Vatican and they do not employ him, they simply buy and run his column.

They understand Catholic doctrine, make no mistake. They simply disagree with it.

The National Catholic Reporter is not Catholic. It doesn’t believe and teach what the Catholic Church believes and teaches.

National Catholic Lite Reporter is a more accurate name for the paper.

Basically they promote dissent and mislead many Catholics.

Please pray the daily rosary for conversions.

A simple review of their subscriber list will point to a few conclusions.

I’ve never heard of them. Can someone give an example of what they promote?

I always found it quite ironic that two Catholic weeklies share the same initials, NCR and are so far apart with regard to orthodoxy. The Reporter makes my skin crawl, and the National Catholic** Register ** is absolutely wonderful, never soft on doctrine, and a great read. I recently read that the Register is run by the Legionaires of Christ, that kind of explained things.

Just about any goofy thing that comes down the pike; liturgical experimentation, ordination of women, to take a few examples. Much of what they do is “soft”; in other words, you need to pay close attention not only to what they say, but also to what the Church says. They tend to pick and just about anything from a Left perspective, much as the Wanderer tends to pick from a Right perspective. Frankly, I have a hard time with both. They both tend towards the polemical.

NCR, Catholic? Yes and pigs fly, the moon is made of green cheese, and Windows ME is a reliable OS:eek:

I think they understand them, they just don’t agree with a lot of them.

I find that National Catholic Reporter bury many of their progressive opinions deep in the article after they write in a confusingly pseudo-scholarly fashion. It is easy to find the heresy. Just scan the last few paragraphs.

I know someone on another BBs that use to write for the National Catholic Reporter. He now calls is the National Catholic DISTORTER.

That’s a common rule-of-thumb in helping to quickly distinguish the Register from the Reporter.

I don’t think it’s Catholic, but apparantly their bishop doesn’t mind them using the term “Catholic” in their moniker. They receive a goodly sum in advertising revenues from Catholic institutions. I’ll wager that, if an orthodox group were to use the term “Catholic”, even as a descriptive adjective in regards to a publication, website, or especially a radio station some bishops would have fits. Imagine the wasted effort in dealing with bishops and chancery officials who ought to encouraging such apostolates. If only that effort could be applied to reaching souls for Christ and His Church!

I suppose the National Catholic Report has their bishop’s blessing, maybe they pay him a percentage or something.

NCR is an independent publication, not under the direct supervision or authority of any bishop. Sort of like how Ignatius Press functions.
