do you think students should be allowed to do homework in detention instead of punishment essays and lines ?

A couple of weeks ago i had an after school detention as a punishment for non stop messing about in class, it lasted 1 hour 30 minutes, this did not include the 5 minutes to get to the detention room, once there we had to stand behind our desks while the detention teacher checked our school uniforms, we had to have our collars done up, ties neat and tidy and blazer done up, then the teacher took the register and gave out the work,which took another 10 minutes, i had to write a punishment essay on school rules and punishments, other students also were set essays , and some had to write lines, only then did the clock start for the 1 and a half hours, i got out of school 1 hour 50 minutes late, when i got home it was time for dinner, then straight into homework, so basically i had no freetime for myself, my question is if we could do homework in detention we could still have some freetime when we get home what do you think ?

This really doesn't touch upon Catholic faith or doctrine, but these are not outlandish punishments, and your school is within their rights. Perhaps you can view not having free time when you got home as part of the punishment.

Do better in class and don't mess around. School time is meant for education.

Yes. You could.
But the mode of a given punishment is not dictated by the offender.

Perhaps the additional annoyance of wasting time provides incentive to not violate the rules in the future.

I think it is a good idea to use students' time in the most productive way possible. Forcing you to write pointless lines is stupid. Forcing you to learn useful stuff like maths, geography or grammar is appropriate.

I also think punishments should reflect the offence, e.g. if someone told an anti-Semitic joke, they could have to view a Holocaust documentary.

Am sorry that you have to go through all this,but we all had to go through more or less the same things in school,it's all part and parcel of our daily life ,day to day school life ,it's part of the discipline,so respect that ,no reservations for messing about in class,you don't expect free time you can do your homework because your punished ,it's a part of the consequences of the detention,take advantage and look at it in a spiritual way, accept it ,as the will of God ,to do better the next time for the love of Jesus Christ and offer it to Him as a reparation for your sins and shortcomings.you'll not do gain grace but also merit.ask Jesus pardon and go for a confession and be at peace.All these are part of growing up,later when your grown-up you'll laugh at the little things you did.take time to pray when you raise up and before going to bed, hope your praying to your guardian angel,or just pray one our Father and three hail Marys when you raise up and go to bed.God Bless
