Do you think the Society of Pope Pius X will return to full communion with Rome?

I don’t know much about some of the schismatics, I have a huge aversion to the new mass, I go because I know Jesus is in the Eucharist but I am drawn to The Society of Pope Pius X but I know unless they are in full communion with Rome I have to stay away. Does any one else hold out hope they will come back to full communion? I saw that there are no longer liturgical rejections that they now recognize the Pope as the head of the church but reject some of our dogmas, I really don’t know much about all this I am still learning but I just really really really prefer the old mass and feel so much liberalism has entered the church since second vatican which I know was never the intention but its just hard when I go to mass and see so much irreverence and immodesty some people go to mass wearing mini skirts and see through tops or their whole chests literally hanging out and the priest doesn’t say anything, I don’t know, I just wish there were a latin mass in my area, there is so much more reverence when I find the time to drive 45 min away to get to one which is rare, and the music at mass or at least the masses in my area are atrocious, I feel like I am at a rock concert, it gives me a headache and its so loud I can’t even concentrate.

There have been 2-3 threads exactly the same as this one recently. Please do a search, or look past the first page! Also, the SSPX are not schismatics or in schism and do not reject any dogma of the Church 🙂

The Society of Pope Saint Pius X is a very strange bunch. I understand and sympathise with them. Being somewhat of a fatalist, the existence of the Second Vatican Council and many of what I perceive to be it’s concessions irk me. But I’m not ready to apostatise either. I think, if the Novus Ordo Church, into which I have recently been baptised, follows back to Her traditional roots than I think reconcilliation is possible. The group splintered out of conviction, it will only rejoin through conviction. The Society views Vatican 2 as a terrible mistake, one that threatens and endangers the Faith. Yet, unlike most sedevacantist heresies they do not subscribe to the theory that the Holy Father is an antichrist, or a general antipope. That puts forward a certain compatibility that, say, the Most Holy Family Monastery does not have.

Can I ask you a supplemental question: is the Tridentine Mass truly superior in reverence? I’m not sneering, like some sneer at traditionalists, I’m just curious to see if in your opinion Modernism thrives in the Novus Ordo, as its title would suggest.

A few months ago a woman wore a see-through blouse to Mass at my church. Tank-tops for men that showcase arm-hair of australopithicene proportion are often seen. Then there’s the talking. God bless Father Koury for stopping his Homily to ask one poor, barbaric sod to stop his cell-phone from ringing. if that sort of blasphemy is absent from the Tridentine Mass than I’m probably as good as there, once I learn proper Church etiquette. I’ve already been won over by the beauty aspect of the Latin Mass and am currently trying to plan out a route to my nearest Cathedral to attend one.

I’ll second you on the music bit. I like to pray and give gratitude to the Deity after partaking in the Holy Eucharist… but the music is too loud so my prayers inevitably go like, Lord, give me the concentration to thank You for your time, and by the time it fades the Priest is already preparing the last bits of the Mass.

Pax,

The sad part is SSPX to this day feel they have done no wrong and that Arch Bishop Levebra was completely in the right when he defied Pope John Paul II and consecrated 4 bishops in France he did not approve of .(Matt 16) I believe that Pope Benedict
has lifted the shcism on them but I think there is another step that needs to be done . In their books I have read , they seem to heavily praise Cardinal
Ratzinger (Now the Pope) and actually use many of his quotes to justify their position.I was going to be a SSPX at one time but there are none around in South Carolina and I am a scripture Catholic now(meaning I am a regular scripture reader and study) for the last 5 years .Being heavily into scripture I could not bring myself to be against the Church as it is now . VATICAN II was approved by Christ (Matt 16 and 18) 2000 years ago.

The society is a “priestly order” most of their priests are excommunicated: as their holy orders were valid but elicit and an act of schism: only their leadership had their excommunications lifted: and for one distant act. Schism is a personal act. The Society is in Schism, but the parishioners may not be. A friend who converted to Catholicism due to me decided to become one of their priests. fact is, its more than the physical differences, much of what they believe is at odds with the church. Individuals? Small Groups? But I don’t see a rapid conversion.

I’m sorry, but I’m fairly sure their priests are not excommunicated. The leading bishops were, but the excommunication was lifted by Pope Benedict in 2009. The priests just don’t have faculties. Let’s pray for their full return to Rome.

Maybe I’m wrong, that’s what I read. Either way, it certainly is unusual state. Not full communion with Rome. I hope they return.

Pax,
At most Traditional Masses the faithful are very reverent, occasionally you’ll find a person that doesn’t follow proper modesty or etiquette, but that’s almost always because they’re new or visiting, a far cry from the abject indifference you see from many of the supposedly catechized faithful at the new order services.
The music is the beautiful and Sacred Gregorian Chant, no happy clappy campfire songs, or rock n roll. Much of the prayers the Priest says are done either inaudibly or with a very low voice, this is so the faithful can offer up prayer free of distraction.
The Traditional Mass is centered and offered directly to God, so all attention is on Our Lord, either in the tabernacle or in the presence of the Holy Eucharist, this aspect is most likely why there is a great deal more reverence displayed at Traditional Masses. The new order churches and their services have shoved the tabernacle in the corner and centered the liturgy around the faithful.

I understand that the difficulties you’ve described in your parish are not easy to deal with. Is there another parish in your area or in another town where you can go to Mass? Maybe you live in a small town, so it’s not possible. If you have no choices, though, you might consider when attending Mass at your parish to offer up your feelings of being uncomfortable as a form of penance, or offer them up for others at your parish. Pray for your priest and for the parish, too (perhaps you already do this). Another thing you can do is to find out if there is any interest from others in requesting a Latin Mass in your area. You could ask the bishop about it, or even the priest at your parish. Just be sure to be very charitable when asking for this.

Regarding the SSPX returning to full communion, or reconciliation with Rome, I don’t have high hopes for this. It would take a miracle for it to happen. But hey, miracles happen, so it’s possible. I’ll pray that it happens. 🙂

I had an opportunity to get my instruction and also get confirmed in the SSPX. They certainly were welcoming and excited about me joining.

But when I thought about it, I realized it didn’t make sense for me to start my journey into the church with a group that is not in full communion with Rome.

Are you sure there is no TLM by you, closer than 45 minutes away?

I pray for the full and complete reunion with Rome.

Personally, I’m hoping they take some sort of prelature deal.

Wow. You don’t know what you are talking about.
  1. None of the members of the SSPX is excommunicated.
  2. None of the members of the SSPX is in schism, nor is the society as a whole in schism.
  3. Nothing believed or taught by the SSPX is in opposition to Catholic doctrine.
There is really only one word that adequately describes the position of the SSPX in relation to the Holy See: Disobedient.

The SSPX has no problem admitting that they refuse to fully submit to the authority of the Pope. They believe that they are following a higher law by doing so - the law of obedience to the will of God and the salvation of souls.

The SSPX was suppressed in the 1970s and therefore, all priests of the SSPX are suspended – that means that they may not lawfully exercise their priestly office. The Holy See has stated several times that the SSPX has no legitimate ministry in the Church, which is the same as saying that they SSPX is not acting lawfully.

That is why one should not make an SSPX chapel your primary place of worship, or consider oneself a “parishioner” of the SSPX.

Not because the priests of the SSPX are excommunicated: they are not.
Not because the priests of the SSPX are in schism: they are not.
Not because the priests of the SSPX are heretics: they are not.

Have you ever heard of the FSSP, they are like the SSPX but in full communion with Rome…

I too sympathise with the SSPX in their war against modernism and their aversion to the Second Vatican Council. However, I dont want to rist involving myself with a society that has irregular relations with the Roman Pontiff…

In answer to the OP’s Question, I just don’t know if the SSPX will return into full communion.

There are some positive signs. For example, the Vatican allowed a nun to join an SSPX convent. But there are negative ones as well. The SSPX’s own American website says that there are “latent problems” in the documents of Vatican II and that “Catholics cannot in conscience attend the Novus Ordo Missae.” Obviously, the SSPX will need to renounce these beliefs if they are to return into full communion with the Pope. I think it should be noted that even if the SSPX returned into full communion, some SSPX chapels may break away from the organization in protest.

All in all, I (as we all I’m sure) hope that the SSPX returns into full communion.

👍:thumbsup:I have to agree with you. This is why I hope that the SSPX will return to full communion with Rome, rather than wallowing in disobedience. We could use many of those (hopefully) good, holy traditional priests in the Catholic Church hopefullly to combat herecy. Modernist tendincies and attitudes are rampant in the Church nowadays. And the worst part is that many people, even otherwise good Catholics, dont realize it. However, all we can do is turn to Our Blessed Lord in prayer and ask Him to help expunge modernism from the Church.

I understand their website has been changed and certain elements removed in the last week or so to make their position more acceptable to the Vatican. Since I’m not a frequent visitor to their site, I wouldn’t know for sure, though.

Definitely.

Is it utterly unacceptable to even suggest that there are “latent problems” with what is arguably a pastoral, non-dogmatic church document, that is, if you take the words of the promulgating pope and our current Holy Father seriously when they have gone on record regarding the authoritative weight attached to the documents of Vatican II?

It seems unreasonable to me to suggest that ther is no possibility of error, let alone, “latent problems” with documents that two popes have denied to be infallible.

.
This is still there; “If the Novus Ordo Missae is not truly Catholic, then it cannot oblige for one’s Sunday obligation. Many Catholics who do assist at it are unaware of its all pervasive degree of serious innovation and are exempt from guilt. However, any Catholic who is aware of its harm, does not have the right to participate.”

And this only took one click of the mouse to find.
