I think what Sean was trying to say is that such work clothes are not truly “appropriate” in the highest sense of things (which “dress clothes” presumably would more ideally satisfy), but rather a lesser form of dignification which falls short of the ideal; only to be understandably accomodated with toleration because of necessary circumstances.
No, I think CarolAnnSFO did a good job conveyeing what I was saying or “trying” to say, she. I am glad we can agree CarolAnnSFO 🙂

This post is just for the record and the teachings of the church:

CCC # 1387: To prepare for worthy reception of this sacrament, the faithful should observe the fast required in their Church. Bodily demeanor (gesture, clothing) ought to convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of this moment when Christ becomes our guest.
Thank you!

I used to wear jeans when I was young man/boy. Now I wear a suit to Mass. Just feel I should do my part to present myself the best I can when I receive the Lord.

I wear a nice pair of jeans to mass (they do not sag, are not baggy, and do not have holes). For my shirt, I usually wear a nice polo.

I used to have a nice pair of khakis, but they don’t fit me anymore, so its almost always jeans.

“I Won’t Ever!”

I saw him in the church building for the first time on Wednesday. He was in his mid-70’s, with thinning silver hair and a neat brown suit. Many times in the past I had invited him to come. Several other Christian friends had talked to him about the Lord and had tried to share the good news with him. He was a well-respected, honest man with so many characteristics a Christian should have, but he had never put on Christ, nor entered the doors of the church.
“Have you ever been to a church service in your life?” I had asked him a few years ago. We had just finished a pleasant day of visiting and talking. He hesitated then with a bitter smile he told me of his childhood experience some fifty years ago. He was one of many children in a large impoverished family. His parents had struggled to provide food, with little left for housing and clothing.
When he was about ten, some neighbors invited him to worship with them. The Sunday School class had been very exciting! He had never heard such songs and stories before! He had never heard anyone read from the Bible! After class was over, the teacher took him aside and said, “Son, please don’t come again dressed as you are now. We want to look our best when we come into God’s house.”
He stood in his ragged, unpatched overalls. Then looking at his dirty bare feet and he answered softly, “No, ma’am, I won’t ever.” “And I never did,” he said, abruptly ending our conversation.
There must have been other factors to harden him so, but this experience formed a significant part of the bitterness in his heart. I’m sure that Sunday School teacher meant well. But did she really understand the love of Christ? Had she studied and accepted the teachings found in the second chapter of James? What if she had put her arms around the dirty, ragged little boy and said, “Son, I am so glad you are here, and I hope you will come every chance you get to hear more about Jesus.” I reflected on the awesome responsibility a teacher or pastor or a parent has to welcome little ones in His name. How far reaching her influence was! I prayed that I might be ever open to the tenderness of a child’s heart, and that I might never fail to see beyond the appearance and behavior of a child to the eternal possibilities within.
Yes, I saw him in the church house for the first time on Wednesday. As I looked at that immaculately dressed old gentleman lying in his casket, I thought of the little boy of long ago. I could almost hear him say, “No, ma’am, I won’t ever.”
And I wept. – Author Unknown

Just curious, please no bashing anyone if they do or dont, I just want to know if

A) you do it on a regular basis
B) only have done it in emergency or less than 3 times a year
C)Have never done it
D) Have never done it and get hopping mad when you see it
E) I cant remember and I dont go to Mass often enough to notice

Just pick one of the above.
I used to, but since we attend the TLM, no, i do not do it anymore.

I wonder if any of the jeans wearers would dress the same to attend a wedding or a formal party? Surely, attending Mass in the presence of our Lord deserves the same or better.

yes and yes…I have worn jeans to an outdoor wedding as did everyone else and yes I have worn nice new Levi’s to a formal party (jeans and black tie fundraisers)

Sadly, they probably would. I’m astounded at what passes for “proper attire” at the opera and at the symphony these days. It’s not only church that has become devalued to the status of a picnic outing - it’s like there’s nothing that’s considered sacred any more.

Henry Fogel, former Chicago Symphony Orchestra General Manager, frequently tells the story of a plumber (or some tradesman) who showed up at his house to do repair work. Henry’s wife was playing classical music in the background, which the man commented upon. She noted who her husband was and asked the repairman if he ever attended the symphony. He replied, “I can’t - I don’t own a tuxedo”. Poor man, missing out on something like this because of old elitist attitudes which he wrongly thought still were mandatory.

Oh, and I read supertitles at the opera when the music is being sung too! 😉

I think C. Now I was always told, even when I was little not to wear jeans to mass or something by someone I can’t remember.

Anyway, I don’t wear jeans that much, like say on a near daily basis.

Yes I do wear jeans, and when it gets very hot I wear short.

Under my habit.

I dress my family as if we were attending a wedding. Dresses, ties, and no jeans. We dress out of respect of the Real Presence of Jesus our King. Then I remembered this.It fits don’t you think?

Matthew 22

Parable of the Marriage Feast

1Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying,
2"The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.

3"And he sent out his slaves to call those who had been invited to the** wedding feast**, and they were unwilling to come.

4"Again he sent out other slaves saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened livestock are all butchered and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast.”’

5"But they paid no attention and went their way, one to his own farm, another to his business,

6 and the rest seized his slaves and mistreated them and killed them.

7"But the king was enraged, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire.

8"Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.

9’Go therefore to the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.’

10"Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests.

11"But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes,

12 and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?’ And the man was speechless.

13"Then the king said to the servants, **‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ **

14"For many are called, but few are chosen."

There’s a literal dress code in heaven? If so there’s no way Francis of Assisi is up there, nor John the Baptist :nope: Neither of them dressed up for nobody.

I think we need to keep in mind what we are attending. We are in Mass to worship God and receive His Presence. Lets say you were going to have an audience with the President in front of the whole country on television. Would you wear shorts and a t-shirt? No? If not, why would you feel comfortable going in front of God himself dressed this way?

👍
Agree 100% with the above. I NEVER wear jeans to mass. Absolutely no shorts or sandals. I wear dress slacks & shirt. My wife wears a dress or skirt and our 4 sons (ages 5-12) wear nice slacks & shirts too. After mass it takes us all of 5 minutes to change our clothes into more casual / fun clothes for the rest of the day. It is worth the effort to show reverence to our Lord & His presence at mass (I think it also shows respect to our priest & the other parishoners). Mass is due a sense of respect & honor. Our appearance can convey that.

Bless you! I’ll take clean jeans over shorts. I have never nor will I ever wear shorts in the presense of my Lord!👍
you are in the presence of your Lord at all times. He is with you always, not just at Mass.

Exactly as Angel Bradford said. I wear my best jeans except when I read. Wearing clothes I wear to work makes me feel like I’m going to work. And I don’t want that.
