Do you wear jeans to Mass?

I frequently wear jeans, unless I am in the mood to wear a skirt, then I wear a skirt. If I knew I wouldn’t be sticking out, I would wear jeans to see the president too.

Let me be more clear. It does not bother me to see a Janitor in Dickeys, key chain and all at Mass what bothers me is derogatory dress.

We have a joke at our house about an old Sears’s reversible suit. You know the vest can be flipped, and you have 2 pair of pants. It is a very religious suit it is in every Church picture - some times spread over 2 different guys!
 
Used to wear them occasionally. However I do not anymore. The three times a year I did wear them, they needed a fill in to lector or be an EM and I would have to decline because of the jeans. So I just don’t wear them anymore.

That made me chuckle. I saw a girl last week in a skirt so short I don’t know how she could sit modestly in it. I’d guess she was standing in the back the whole time.

And I don’t wear jeans period. So that’s a C
 
I don’t feel it’s appropriate to dress down for Mass. If we were meeting God face to face in a visual way, what would we wear? Less than if we had a meeting with someone of great earthly importance? Not likely.

How can we take the casual attitude that, “Well at least I showed up for Mass. It doesn’t matter what I wear.” And I recognize that poor people may not have anything except jeans to wear to Mass, so I’m not addressing them here.

I believe it’s a sign of respect to dress appropriately for Mass.
 
I think we need to keep in mind what we are attending. We are in Mass to worship God and receive His Presence. Lets say you were going to have an audience with the President in front of the whole country on television. Would you wear shorts and a t-shirt?

The Saints can wear sackcloth and a rope, and I’ve gotta drop food money on a fancy pair of pants I can’t get dirty? I just can’t accept that line of thinking.

It’s not that I mind people wearing their finest to go to Mass, but I don’t like the idea that it’s expected. Wearing dress clothes isn’t necessarily more reverent, and for many I think it’s a near occaision of sin (especially if those people are also looking around at others and judging them for their clothing choices). Imagine the folks who must have scoffed at St. Francis of Assisi!

Incidently, I’m not trying to make excuses for immodest dress either. Cover up!

I try to wear dress pants, but my laundry is not always done by Sunday morning, so sometimes I have no choice. I really don’t get upset by anyone wearing jeans. I’m just happy to see people at church, and the last thing I want to do is be the church fashion police.
 
This is south Louisiana. Jeans are dress clothes here too. Shoot, folks wear shorts to Mass during the summer all the time! Men wear guayabera shirts. It’s all well and good to dress up when your temps are in the 70s…it’s quite another thing when you have temps in the high 90s and the humidity approaching 90%.

That’s true. Where you live makes a big difference as to what is “appropriate”. When I lived on the East Coast, I never wore jeans to Mass. Here in Southern California, it is much less formal and lots of people wear jeans and shorts.
 
As a P.S., I just always wear casual clothes to daily mass. The only ones who dress up for that are the ones on their way to work.
 
A) All the time…except when I am a Lector or an EOMC. Jeans are pretty much status quo at my parish.
 
Off topic entirely- but I am the OP so I just wanted to ask-

What do you think of wearing a pair of jeans that are over $250.00 US currency (and look bad) over a pair of pants that depending on gender are not dressy but clean and acceptable?

I am getting older and this is a sign of that but- I cant help but wonder why not save those jeans for 'clubbin it and use normal clean stuff for Mass?

There was a woman who came into Mass last month 20 min. late.
How did I notice she was 20 min late?

She was almost …ready for a shot on a cover for Vogue- and she marched up to the front pew slowly…every man in the Church was looking at her.
Now- She was showing all. :o (Think Elle Mc Phereson) Low Ride Jeans that got to the point where … it was a bit distracting.

So, the whole Mass got derailed (slowed down- my Priest in this Mass was - distracted) by this. I think this was the first time some people stayed longer than usual at the Mass. But , I never saw her before or again.

I dont take offense to those who wear jeans if they are doing their best to not take away from the Mass.

Hey, Jeans are not the only thing. I have had the hardest time focusing when heavy perfumes (the one thankfully no one wears anymore, Red Door) and others are horribly distracting.

But a peep show is … not appropriate.
 
I don’t think there is anything intrinsically wrong with wearing jeans to Mass as long as they are clean, presentable and don’t have the butt cut out or anything like that.

I do think that as a simple matter of respect for the dignity of what is going on at Mass people should dress in a manner that reflects that. I know that that flies straight in the face of all those who say, God knows me and loves as I am and he accepts me, so i don’t have to dress up. True, he does, no doubt about it. . You should still respect Him and His house and dignify it by the way you present yourself there.

Is it really that big a sacrifice?.

I will humbly have to disagree. I, too, am from south Louisiana and do not agree that jeans are considered dress clothes. I know you were be humorous in that statement, but I firmly believe it boils down to one’s upbringing. I am not saying that people who wear jenas to church were brought up bad. Not at all.
I went to an all boys private Catholic High School. It was required that everyday at class we wore dress pants, belt, shirt with a collar, dress shoes, and had our hair cut to a proper length (now that I have no hair, it is a non-issue).
Because of this, I feel that it important for me to present myself in the same manner while worshipping. I agree with the previous poster’s statement about if youwere to go on a job interview, visit a president, etc…wouldn’t you dress up for that occasion? So why would you not do it for God? However, that being said…I do not judge others on what they wear, it is just my personal preference.

I also think slacks are a lot cooler than jeans, they breath easier.

Oh, and to touch on this question being asked if not to bash on someone. Why does every question have to have a motive? Why can’t a question be asked for curiosity alone? I believe you when you said you asked this just because you were wondering.
