Hi everyone,

I was wanting to get some feedback from y’all to see how many of you wear the brown scapular (or other scapulars) and what led you to begin wearing them?

Thanks!

i began to wear my brown scapular when i visited a carmelite monastery a couple of years ago. i bought one and let our parish priest invest me with the brown scapular. when i attend our chapter meeting, i wear two scapulars, brown and white.🙂
(btw, i’m a lay Dominican. )

When I was sixteen years old and lived in East New York, Brooklyn, our parish had the devotion of the First Saturdays to our Blessed Mother. That was a long time ago!

My cousin and I signed a pledge, (not under pain of sin) to say the Rosary every day. That was a great turning point in my life! That is when I started wearing the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

I have been a Lay Carmelite since 1975…a great blessing and help to me!

In Carmel,

Dorothy

There is a Lay Dominican Order flourishing here where I live in the south. A little while back I attended an excellent presentation they gave on the Rosary, and on the Mass. Dominicans are truly the Order of Preachers!

The various orders in the Church are a great blessing to the Church. We may wear different uniforms, but we are all in the same parade! 🙂

Peace in Jesus and Mary,

Dorothy

My parish priest enrolled me in the Brown Scapular on Pentecost Sunday, 2013. I have always worn it since. :extrahappy:

I am beginning to wear the scapular everyday. I need to get invested in it, though, but my parish priest just gave it a simple blessing and refused to invest me with it even though I printed out the investing rite and all for him 😦 Oh well…I just sometimes take it off and forget to put it back on, but I am slowly getting better at it. Haha

Investing is not necessary to get the full benefits of the Brown Scapular sacramental.

God bless!

Many blessings to you! The Lay Carmelite Order has been and still is a tremendous blessing for me.

Thank you, and many blessings to you.

The Lay Carmelite Order has been an answer to my prayer. My prayer was simple–please show me how to grow in spirituality. Time and time again, I was gently led to Carmel.

So here I am, with a wonderful bunch of people; learning, growing everyday.

God is so good! The meetings are so important to me,… along with praying and studying the Carmelite saints about prayer. 🙂

I wear the Red Scapular of the Passion and the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

I have been wearing a Brown Scapular for about 18 years now, I think.

If I recall correctly, I think that a Catholic couple that I knew were wearing them, and told me about the scapular when I asked them about it. I then had a priest friend enroll me, and I have been wearing one ever since then. 🙂

How do you weare it?

It does not seem to stay in place. It either ends up close to my throat or back of my neck.

I first wore a scapular years ago following First Communion. In those years, it was quite common for children to wear scapulars, and it seemed we all had a few of them. During the years since I have intermittently worn many different scapulars. There have been long periods when I haven’t worn one, but then I’ll see them displayed in a Catholic bookstore and will purchase one. I currently have a brown scapular but, alas, the string came loose. I’ll have to get another one!

How do you wear a brown scapular? As you know, there are two small squares or rectangles of brown wool attached to each other with cords. Place one of the wool pieces over your chest, as close to your heart as you can. The other wool piece goes in back, between your shoulder blades.

Perhaps you need a scapular with a longer cord. I find that many store-bought scapulars have cords that make it hard to tuck under my bra with even a slightly low or boat-shaped neckline. I believe that most store-bought scapulars for adults have 16 inch or 18 inch cords. There is a vendor on Etsy who makes sturdy brown scapulars (I have been wearing this particular scapular 24/7 for a year now, except when I take a shower – I have a separate, store-bought, scapular for bathing purposes) and who can adjust the length of the cord for each individual buyer. (I can give you that info in a private message, if you wish.) I am 5’5", and I find that a 22 inch cord allows enough room for me to tuck my scapular under my bra without being too long. That length would probably work for most adults who want to conceal their scapular under fashionable clothing. If you are a big and/or tall man, a 24 inch cord might be better.

I love the brown scapular. It is an extremely precious gift and I only take it off briefly when I take a shower. Father Corapi gave an analogy that the brown scapular is like your spiritual dog tags. It is a constant prayer to wear it. It identifies what side you are on so to speak. Also the promise of it is so strong I honestly can’t see why one wouldn’t wear it other than for petty reasons such as “its bothersome” or one might feel “funny” explaining it to someone who inquires about it. The Blessed Mother will help you immensely. I get a bunch of them sent to me from a site called freebrownscapular.com I get them blessed and hand them out to whoever wants one. To Catholics and non-Catholics I explain the importance of getting invested in it but I encourage the non-Catholics to wear it anyway. I also tell them its a good idea to say at least one hail mary a day. The non-Catholics I come across generally respond very well and I have had several non-Catholics wanting them very much. I could go on about it but my advice is to wear it loyally. You wont be disappointed. 🙂

I usually wear my brown scapular. But I’ve had to stop temporarily as I am recovering from allergies that have me broken out all over. Even being in the sun hurts my skin right now. But I keep it near me at all times. And when I am able to wear it again, I will do so gladly.

(And no, my allergies aren’t from wearing the scapular.)
