Do You Wish You Knew Latin?

I have wheelocks Latin, College Text book. Latin for Dummies, and Latin Grammer from Tan books. My problem is how to pronounce the words.
There are various downloadable MP3 sites on the web which give you Latin readings and stuff. Also Edmund J. Baumeister has a good tape companion to his book “The New Missal Latin” which you can order from St Mary’s Publishing Company or, I think, amazon.com.

Has anyone out there heard of Latina Christiana? We used it for our kids. It’s an o.k. introduction if you’re a raw beginner like me.

When my mother passed I specifically chose On Eagles Wings. An absolutely beautiful, filled me with emotion, and still very comforting hymn. But to ea his own. 🤷
Very true. Sorry about that. I just prefer the old Latin hymns and the Byzantine ones.

tee_eff_em,

Do you know if there are any Latin-English interlinear Bibles out there?

I do not know of any interlinears currently in print (but I do not have much interest in them :twocents: ). Baronius Press has a parallel Douay-Rheims/Clementine Vulgate, but I’ve not held it in my hands so cannot say more than that it exists.

When I do have need of such a resource, I go online to the Unbound Bible. You can also produce your own using CAF (maybe send yourself a PM?) 😛

Yes I wish the church hadn’t changed things som much in the 60’s

I bumped the group thread, but forgot that the group is closed. :ouch:

Since the commencement impends, I thought I would remind:
Aw, crud!* Who knew the [group=26]Latin Lately[/group] group and forum was closed to the public!? 🤷

I repeat here:

Another announcement from the [post=2538595]LatinStudy[/post] list, of interest to those who would seek to learn Ecclesiastical Latin especially:
There has been some (modest) demand for another Collins’ A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin group. I’m willing to lead it if there is enough interest.

Thanks a lot!!! This site is so amazing! 👍👍👍

I would love to learn Latin as well! 👍
My biggest problem is that it has been so long since I’ve taken an English class, I don’t remember any grammar terms! I’m still pretty good with nouns and verbs, but after that… 🤷

I would love to learn Latin as well. I am a musician and want to introduce some Chant and Latin Hymns but I don’t understand what I am singing. The number one push back from Choir members is that they don’t understand Latin. I have nothing to offer so it just gets dropped. I have very little knowledge of Latin so I need a group for dummies. Maybe someone could have two groups.

Well I have received my books (A Primer of Ecclesiastic Latin by: Collins, and its answer key, and Dictionary of Ecclesiastical Latin by Stelten). I am ready to go I hope.

Let me know if this group is going to happen or not.

thanks

I know Latin. I’ve had 9 years of study, starting from Wheelock’s grammar in middle school and continuing until upper level courses in college. I’m not a Latin expert, and all that went down years ago, but here’s my two cents:

If you want to learn Latin, get this book, read it, and continue on through the rest of the books in this series. This book will surprise and amaze you. This is “total immersion” Latin. I sorely, sorely wish this series of books was available eons ago when I trod down this path: Brittania est insula. non est parva. est magna. incolae Brittaniae agricolae sunt. …

Get this book! Read it! Live it! Lingua Latina

I know it’s tough for English speakers, as you don’t have as much grammar as we do in France for example. So we definitely need to know what genitive, accusative, vocative, etc is, especially with declinations…:(:(😦 (help!!!)

Is there kind of a Latin that you’d learn in total immersion? Like with the Vulgate or any other Ecclesiastical text? I don’t want metalanguage, I prefer to learn the language itself, without the rules;…
