Do you work in the same industry as your parents?

I work for a mining office, as does my father. When I had finished university I went to work in the same company. I find it quite fun - many of the employees were deferential (my father holds a high position in the company) and I found it very easy to make new friends šŸ˜ƒ
 
I was just wondering if you consider these TRUE friends and how you discern this. Are these people GOOD friends because your father is a honcho or because they like you? How do you discern?:confused:

Most people can tell the difference between someone who is truly friendly vs someone who is only friendly when they want to suck up. I look at how a person treats third parties when there is no benefit to them in being nice for one thing.

Same principle goes for potential life partners - how they treat family and friends, but also strangers, employees, children and even animals, gives a good indication of their general character and so how they will treat you.

If they didnā€™t like me they wouldnā€™t have befriended me and I wouldnā€™t have called them ā€˜friendsā€™. But Iā€™m not denying that my fatherā€™s position could very well have afforded me considerable benefits in the friendship department. In the final count though, a true connection is still needed to forge friendship.
 
You must be more trusting than I am. Two years ago, a colleague ā€œbefriendedā€ me at work. We ate lunch together, shared our food, and even did things socially outside of the workplace together. In her authority and position in the organization she ultimately got me fired, quite unjustly, and I have not recovered from this in my career as of yet. Some ā€œFriendā€! :confused: I had to move to another state for a lesser job with much less compensation with adverse effects on my family. Others at my prior job have contacted me and said things like: " I know you thought Jane was your friend, but, she threw you under the bus". I was truly deceived. The only thing I can really do about this now is trust in scripture:

Yes, Iā€™m in the education field, just like my father was.

Also, creepily enough, my wife is in the health care field, just like my mother was.

That sounds great if it works for you. Did your dad help you get the job?

My dad was a high school chemistry teacher for 30 years and then he taught the same thing at a community college. My mom was a 5th grade teacher until she left to have her kids, and then she worked as a circulation clerk/supervisor at a library.

I spent two years as a community college teacher (Western Civ) and have had other jobs ranging from college tutor to word processing to test scoring.
 
Not the same industry (aerospace and ATMs for my father, energy trading for me), but the same profession (software).

He took me into the computer room when I was little. Let me swap the disk pack on an IBM 2311 and I was hooked.šŸ™‚
 
I work in a very similar industry to my father in that we are both faculty at post-secondary institutions. He is the head of the Production Animal Health department at a veterinary school, and I am an instructor in a practical nursing (LPN/LVN) program at a college.
