Do you worry about drinking from the chalice?

I must confess I always set right up front and notice how many people drink the precious blood before I do

If I am not one of the first I just abstain. I am afraid of picking up someones illness

I guess my faith must be a trifle weak…But I can’t seem to get this idea out of my mind

Am I the only one that feels like this?:confused:

You’re not alone. It kept me from receiving the Precious Blood for many years. Then a priest once told me that, since the Precious Blood retains the properties of wine (i.e. alcohol), and alcohol is a natural germ-killer, it’s difficult to actually pick something up. That was enough to convince me.

That being said, if I’m sick, I don’t drink from the chalice as I do not want to chance getting other people sick. 😉
 
Actually that is what I am afraid of, someone who is sick will, just not mind spreading germs, or they may not know they are ill

I have heard you are most contagious before there are any sings of illness

I am not sure if this is true, or an old wives tale

Do you have to receive under both species for it to be a full communion?

No. Jesus is fully present, Body Blood, Soul, and Divinity in both species (See CCC 1377 & CCC 1390). You can receive under either species and still get the full graces of Communion. So no worries there! 😉

No - you do not. Jesus is present - Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, under both species. Receiving one is receiving all of Him.

If you don’t wish to receive from the cup, then don’t.

Think of it this way though - EMHCs (and priests) have been consuming the remainder of the Precious Blood in their chalice at the end of Holy Communion (after EVERYONE has had their mouths on it) for many many years now. You don’t hear of them dropping dead or suffering from massive repeated illness do you?

I wouldn’t worry about it.

I will never refuse to receive the Blood of Christ - I won’t worry about germs, I’ve never gotten sick in all the years I’ve taken the cup - I just trust that this Precious Blood will keep me from getting sick, but if I do have a cold or something, then I don’t receive it. You have full Communion without it.

You’re not the only one! The only time I drank from the Cup was at my Baptism/Confirmation/Communion. And then I was pretty much third in line… 😛
 
I don’t worry about it. I think I am far more likely to get sick from sharing the same Holy Water with everyone else, and putting my hand on the same doorknobs as everyone else as I’m coming in the front door, than I am to get sick from sharing the Chalice.

As far as I know, I’ve never gotten sick at Church, though. 🙂

Why do you seem to think contagion is a one-way street? You two (among plenty of others on this forum) seem to believe you will not contract the germs of others from the common cup, but other people might contract yours…?

What’s so special about *your *germs? :confused:

The only thing I worry about in ref to this is: Will there be some left when I get up there?

I know we can receive under only one species. But I prefer to receive both.

I used to be concerned years ago, as I’m quite the germaphobe. But, I really felt through prayer, God’s still small voice telling me that He would protect me and my family and all who drink from the chalice. Now, the presence of both body and blood is in the Eucharist, as well, but if you truly want to drink from the chalice, then pray for God’s direction. I don’t imagine He would give us an opportunity to partake of His precious blood, if we were going to be harmed in some way, while doing so. Those are just my beliefs with it.🙂

I think you were misunderstood. You said that you would not receive from the Chalice if you had a cold, but I think the person who responded to you responded as though they thought you said that you would.

This sort of misunderstanding is quite common on the Internet. Don’t get shy just because of that.

(BTW, welcome to the forums! 👋)

It’s not that I think I have super-germs. I just refrain in order to be respectful. I realize that others are more sensitive about germs than I am. If I’m hacking all through Mass, I’d rather not detract from another person’s reception of the Eucharist by receiving from the chalice. 🤷 And since I know that I receive Jesus fully whether or not I receive under one species or both, then I know I’m still okay. 👍
 
This past winter, I caught every virus that was around and I refrained from receiving from the cup, but also decided I would no longer receive the precious blood. But then, I got well and I can not stay away from receiving.

My friend who has been a minister of the cup told me that he has yet to get a cold, despite having to drink the remaining precious blood after everyone has received.

I think there is a distinction between the Precious Blood which will never make you sick, and the cup which everyone has had their mouth on. Technically, the germs on the cup can make you sick. Hopefully, the Precious Blood purifies whatever could harm you.
 
Thank you, jmcrae, yes I was misunderstood. That was not what I said or meant. Thanks, Joe, too, and thanks for the warm welcome! I just couldn’t understand why she talked to me that way! Don’t remember who it was now.

I’ll give a new answer: I will never refuse the Blood of Christ unless I am sick. Simple as that.
 
Not to derail the thread, but I have a question. Some decline the Precious Blood, because they believe (and the Church teaches) that the host is BOTH species.

That being the case, why does the Priest say “Body of Christ”, instead of “Body and Blood of Christ”, when distributing hosts?

I’ve always wondered about that. 🤷

Toughen up! This forum is on your side. (If you can’t hold your own with this crowd, how are you going to defend your faith in the secular world? )
