Do you/your family say grace before meals when out in public?

Do you/your family say grace before meals when out in public?

Why or why not?

If you do, do you say grace with hushed voices, or in normal-volume voices?

Do you include the sign of the cross?
 
Heck yes. We’re still thankful for the food, and esp the opportunity to eat out. It’s my hope that if someone sees me, they’ll think “wow, good for them!” – if they don’t, well, that’s ok too. Maybe, just maybe, seeing someone else do it will encourage others to do it too. There are definitely worse trends to start, right? LOL…and yes, we make the sign of the cross and speak at the same volume we normally would.
 
Just do it! Grace, sign of the Cross but not all our worse thing of the day and blessing of the day that we round the table with at home. Also at home we include verses or prayers the younger ones are trying to learn…these skipped in public.

Normal voices? Our children are lectured whenever we go some place to refrain from normal voices to avoid disturbing the peace charges!😊
 
Yep!

Actually, we have been complimented more than once. And more than once, the server has joined in. Oh yeah, and we hold hands, too.

When I was a server, I would stand aside to let them finish, and then give them whatever I had to bring back to the table.

SOTC before and after the prayer, with the prayer itself in a very soft voice. I don’t need to wake up the whole restaurant.
 
Most definitely…including making the sign of the cross.

Preach often and when you have to, use words
 
No, I haven’t in years. But then again, I am not really religious though. I am trying to come back to the church. I am still not sure if it’s right for me.
 
Yep, I do say a little prayer and SOTC as well. There are times that people stare at me but that’s ok. 😊 🙂
 
My fiance and I make the Sign of the Cross and say grace, although we do try to drop the voices just a titch. We get more stares if we eat on campus (we’re university students) than if we go out to a restaurant. 😊

SOTC and grace, I don’t care if people stare at us. They do anyway since we have 3 kids and are preggo w/ #4**
 
Yep, every time I eat in public (and at home) I say grace and make the s.o.c.

Why? Because I’m thankful for the food that is placed in front of me. 👍
 
ALWAYS! Why would we stop being Christians just because we’re ready to eat? 🙂
 
Hubby and I not pray out loud, but we both do the Sign of the Cross and give our thanks silently. TexRose that’s a beautiful Madonna and Child picture on your post. God bless.🙂

Oh, I forgot. For a long time we did not have this practice until Father brought up the subject at Mass one day, and his comment was to make the Sign of the Cross not look like you are swatting flies, so now we tease each other not to forget to swat the flies.😃
 
SOTC and grace. Big family here so we try to keep our voices down not to bother other diners anyway, but we really don’t care if anybody stares or not.
 
Yes, at home, in a pub, at friends houses whether they are Catholic or not, at family’s houses whether they practise their faith or not. Ok, I’ll make it short everytime before food touches my lips I thank God for it wherever I am.

Here’s a funny story. I am on a teaching placement in an art department within a Catholic school. I work with a woman who is my mentor and supervisors me in the school.She loves Jesus and is a very kind woman; she’s Methodist. We go down to the dinnerhall and nine times of ten we eat in our classroom , sometimes we eat in the hall. Anyway we mostly eat in the classroom because we work marking through our lunch hour or doing other work and discuss students aims and what’s to be done etc. Anyhow, we are sitting at our desks discussing work and schemes of work (I’m creating teaching resources for the department so need to understand what their schemes of work are in place) and I make the Sign of the Cross, say grace in my head and make the Sign of the Cross again. She says, ‘Do you do that because you think I am lying?’ I fell about laughing! It occured to me that most folks have no idea what I am doing when I say grace. I said ‘I am thanking God for my food and whilst I’m at it I thank Him for my day and ask Him to bless everyone in it and I offer everything to Him’ She smiled and said ‘OK I thought you were crossing yourself to protect yourself’ I said the Sign of the Cross is primarily a thanksgiving.

How funny. She’s such a Christian and goes to Mass with me often. Anyway pray for her conversion, she loves Jesus and is very giving and loving.

No doubt about it…we always pray before meals. We were on vacation all weekend and we did at each stop.
 
Yes we do make the sign of the Cross and pray silently.
But that’s only half the story. We live in a democratic society where we are blessed with inalienable rights to express our faith. So when we pray for grace before meals, especially in public, we are also thankful for this blessing and include those who are not free to do so…
The challenge is when I’m eating in a public restaurant in China or when having business lunch or dinner with people from other non-Christian societies, most of them atheists. I often catch myself doing my prayers a tad too quickly. And I feel guilty that I should hurry up…
 
Yes we do. We don’t shout it though and even at home, we speak quietly while saying grace. My dc and dh also pray when they have lunch away from home. They tend to say that in their heads, so there would just be a pause before they started eating.
