My ferrets are obligate carnivores, which means they need meat to survive and properly digest (you don’t want to see the mess when they eat anything other than meat-based kibble).

No fasting for them!

Peace and God bless!

We have a cat, who is definitely carnivore ;).
We fast, she doesn’t.😃

Well, there’s always room for economia.

Snakes, on the other hand (and also carnivores), go weeks without eating anything.

Since non-human animals have irrational souls, they can’t understand the concept of fasting. So they don’t fast like we do.

Though some animals do fast for biological reasons. Like, snakes.

Many Catholics (and Christians in general) don’t understand the concept of fasting either.

🙂

That serpent in the Garden most certainly understood concepts very well!

Are you kidding???
If Garfield, age 3-1/2 doesn’t get his regular ration, I get teeth marks.

exactly. I also would consider it cruel to make a pet, especially a carnivorous one observe a Christian fast. It reminds me of my friends story of his hippy vegetarian uncle who adopted their family dog (once he and his brothers went to college) and made the dog be a veg too. The dog died an early death, having lost several pounds, its nice fur coat became coarse and brittle from the lack of nutrients…

my dog is a diabetic and if he misses a meal, he crashes big time.
so no, he doesn’t observe holy days like we do.

Fasting is not the same as abstaining, regardless my critters approach me with bared fangs and ruffled back hair assuring their non compliance with any rules.

Having only cats (who are obligate carnivores, much like ferrets) as pets, no.

Keep in mind, friends, that some groups use the term fast solely for reduced food volume; others use it to include abstinance from meat, sometimes in addition to, sometimes in place of, reduced food volume.

Now, those obligate carnivores of mine, they don’t always realize that they are… One is particularly fond of potato chips… and the other is fond of mints. Since those don’t come into the house during fasts, they can’t poach any during fasts.

Nope. Not only do my cats need meat to be healthy, if I tried to cut down their intake, they’d probably end up eating each other. 😛

My cats make very distinct sounds indicating to me when they have come to the end of their fasting. Their fasts end each day at 7pm.

It’s a sound that cannot be ignored.

NO! Because she is a dog, not a person!!! No need for her to fast!

Correct me if I’m wrong, since its been a while that I was Roman Catholic, but I remember Catholic concepts of fasting very similar to Orthodox concepts of fasting. Fasting is a tool used to bring us closer to God by focusing on God and not ourselves. In other words it is a means to an end not an end in and of itself. Since animals cannot focus on God the way we can there would be no point in an animal fasting.

If I’m wrong in this please let me know. Thanks!

No, you are correct. Eastern Catholic fasting is very similar (actually, identical) to Orthodox fasting. We do not fast simply to fast, but to be more focused on spiritual matters, rather than material.

This is something I still struggle with…I love to cook, and I love to eat. 😊 So every fasting period is very penitential for me!

We should have a “Do your kids fast” thread, though, because I have been pondering that issue.

LOL, your poor pets!

and samcarter14…that’s funny!!! I hope your cats don’t end up eating each other. :rotfl: :rotfl:
