Now what’s here to scare anyone? Just some posts about conflicting medical opinions, pill-crazy doctors, poor advice from priests, abortion and excommunication…😦

No, you’re not sinning. I had to take the pill for medical reasons too, and during that time I was quite upset about it. But I consulted a few Catholic experts, and they told me if it is for medical reasons, it is not sinful. Of course, if there is any other way to treat your hormone probs, look into that. But again, no, don’t worry, you’re not sinning. You have a medical condition, and God has great mercy. God bless you :hug1:.

The pill does absolutely nothing to treat PCOS!!! It makes me so angry to keep hearing about Drs who are too lazy to actually treat the problem, so they give you the pill to ease the symptoms. If your symptoms are masked, then you won’t bug them anymore.
You must treat the cause of PCOS. Metformin is a good way to start. Find a doctor who actually knows something about it, most OB/GYNs do not. You probably need a reproductive endocrinologist (RE). At least check with a dr or nurse practitioner trained in NaPro www.popepaulvi.com to find out what you can do to treat the disease.
I have PCOS too, and trust me, most drs are clueless. Along with metformin, one of the only drugs to actually have been proven to do any good, you may need other hormone supplements. You definitely need to cut carbs out of your diet, that makes a huge difference for almost everyone.
But I reiterate, the pill is NOT a treatment, just a placebo-effect so that your dr won’t have to do any work. You owe it to yourself to do some research on it and find way to treat the disease, not just cover up the symptoms.
I couldn’t agree more!!! It is so true that docs these days don’t want to actually get to the root cause of the problem they just want to prescribe something and send you on your merry little way in order to go ahead and see the next patient waiting to be seen. Go find an NFP only doc who won’t prescribe the pill even for medical reasons. As far as it being a sin, I am not a priest so I will not answer that…did you ask your priest??

i have just been put on bc pills to stop heavy bleeding. and amazingly it stopped the heavy bleed by the end of the first day! if anyone doesn’t want to be on these pills, it is me! i’m over 40 and the last thing i need is some other issue caused from the pill. also we are VERY pro-life and been blessed with MANY children. so for me, getting on the pill was like a slap in the face for everything my husband and i stand for. but for my health, so i won’t bleed to death, i HAD to go on it. i’ve tried to come off it, and the bleed starts all over again. the pill has been a God-send for my condition, and i sure hope when i have relations with my husband, that i am not sinning against God and His truths of His church.

Just out of curiosity…does everyone have insurance that will cover a visit to an NFP-only doc? Or if not, does everyone have extra funds that will pay for that visit and follow-ups? Because I know that I have neither, and I suspect that many others don’t as well.

This is a rhetorical question so I don’t expect actual answers (as I am well aware of the prohibition regarding personal questions on the forums), but I wanted to have everyone think about this issue. “Go see an NFP-only doc” and “go learn the Creighton method” are two very common pieces of advice given on these boards WRT menstrual and fertility issues. My insurance is very specific in what it covers (and the only NFP docs I know of in my area are NOT covered), and the only Creighton teachers in my state (at least the only ones listed on the website, last I checked) are an 8-hour drive away in the Upper Peninsula.

Perhaps we can come up with a more feasible solution to those of us who do not have NFP-friendly insurance or available funds.

I’m not a doctor, although my father is one and my mother is a nurse. He worked for a Catholic hospital and is perhaps one of the most conciencious and best in terms of individualized care. (I might be a little biased since he is my dad, but I’ve heard enough kudos and praise of him from others who says he’s the most concerned and caring doctor they’ve ever had.) 😉

You’ve received enough information from others, but I will add one more piece of advice. Find a doctor who not only is morally sound and/or respectful of your beliefs, but also someone who really knows about the chemistry of medications. My father was a pharmacist prior to becoming a general practitioner. He understands it very well and that is why he is not keen on just throwing a drug onto a patient unless it is absolutely necessary. He also can’t be fooled by the drug reps and drug companies. So, see in the credentials if the doctor you are seeing to get a second opinion has a background in pharmacology. It does help when asking questions regarding the drugs.

This is a valid point. Not every woman I saw in the family planning clinic was there for contraception.

I teach the Creighton Model. “Most centers also have provision for financial hardship” according to the AAFCP. Also, long-distance teaching of the CrM is an option. I believe I have heard other NFP providers work with couples.

HTH!
