How do you feel about the fact that Doctor Who has Christmas episodes despite the fact that both of the show-runners that have been in charge are both atheists? I think the only one that was in poor taste was “Voyage of the Damned”, which was a good story, but way too dark for Christmas (seriously, nearly all the people on that ship died!) I guess we could also make a case for the poor taste in “The End of Time” and the upcoming “Time of the Doctor”, since they’re both final episodes for Ten and Eleven.
Incidentally, my favorite one is “The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe”, which did very well with the CS Lewis references.

England is rather farther along the road of secularism than the USA is. I suspect that Christmas there for the great majority has more to do with tinsel, presents, pageantry and good cheer than it does the birth of the Messiah. Pretty sad that the holiday lives on long after being divorced from the holyday.

30+ year “Dr. Who” fan here.

I don’t think anything about it.

Now usually the season begins on Easter as well. They really play up the “lonely god” and “savior” thing lately. Rather tired of it.

Our family are all huge Doctor Who fans. It is the one show that we watch together and all agree on. My kids will always remember their Christmas nights cuddled up with hot chocolate and a fire in the fireplace, watching our beloved Madman in a Blue Box. It is a wonderful way to wind down after all the excitement and running around. I consider it a win that they actually call it “Christmas” and not “Holliday.”

I do like the show, but there are times when it seems both Moffat and Davies had agendas and were imposing their views. But I guess when you’re a writer, it happens.

Jharek,

My friend, as usual we’re in agreement!

I’ve been a Peter Capaldi fan since Local Hero. I’m tickled he’s going to be the Doctor!

And he was the fellow in “Fires of Pompeii.”

Yes, better than the swearing politician! 🙂
